What an AI assistant is
An AI assistant is a chat product billed as a personal plan or a work seat, used to draft, search, and work across files, while a specialist only codes, takes meetings, or runs your site, and these ten are the general-work seats. A pull-request bot belongs with AI code assistants, a drafting suite with AI writing assistants, and a widget on your site with chatbots for business. Meeting notes are a different buy, in AI meeting assistants.
How we chose
Toolradar's AI assistants category lists 1,462 tools, updated September 2026, and I ranked 10 assistants a person or a small team would actually keep open. I read plan names and prices on each vendor's own site on September 23, 2026. I did not run a shared benchmark, no vendor paid for a slot, and the directory's own top 10 is a different list.
ChatGPT, the default seat
ChatGPT is the buy for drafting, files, and research, with a workspace once you are two people. The plan split is ChatGPT Go vs Plus and ChatGPT Plus vs Pro.
Free includes unlimited everyday text, with limits on uploads, images, voice, and deep research that a daily user hits. Go is $8 a month in the US, the price on OpenAI's January 16, 2026 launch note, and that is still the published Go price. Plus is $20 a month, billed monthly, with no annual prepay. Pro at the 5x tier is $100, and the 20x tier is $200. Business standard seats are $25 a month, or $5 less on an annual bill, and premium seats are $125 a month. Both seat types need two seats, so a solo buyer should stay on Plus.
The catch: On September 10, 2026, OpenAI paused new signups and upgrades into that 20x tier, including from the 5x tier. Existing 20x subscriptions still renew. Go may include ads, while Plus and above stay ad-free. Go's Think mode is GPT-5.6 Luna, not GPT-5.6 Sol, and the pricing page puts GPT-6 reasoning on Plus and above, so Go is a lighter model.
The first paid assistant for most people, and a bad time to chase the paused 20x tier.
Claude, when the document is the job
Claude fits a long file or a terminal session on one bill, including teams of 2 to 150 that need SSO. Rates are on the pricing page, and the side-by-side is Claude vs ChatGPT.
Free caps projects at 5. Pro is the annual rate in the table, $200 billed up front, or $3 more on a month-to-month bill, so the lower rate is a year paid up front. Max opens at $100 a month and gives 5x or 20x Pro usage inside each five-hour session. Team standard seats are $25 a month, or less on an annual bill. Premium seats are $125 a month, and the annual rate is lower. Enterprise is an annual seat plus usage at API rates. The published seat matches the annual standard Team rate.
The catch: Web, desktop, mobile, and Claude Code share one pool, so a heavy terminal day can lock the chatbot. The allowance comes back on a five-hour window, paid plans add a weekly cap on top, and Anthropic publishes no fixed message count. Context can reach 1 million tokens and varies by model. SSO and SCIM are not on Pro or Max.
The right seat when one bill should cover documents and the terminal, and the wrong one if chat must stay reserved.
Gemini, when the files are already in Google
Gemini is the assistant inside the Google account you already use for mail and files, and one plan can be shared with up to five others, and the comparison is Gemini vs ChatGPT.
Google AI Pro is the US price in the table. August 19, 2026 student terms renew eligible US students at that rate after a free year, with signup open through December 31, 2026. Outside the US, Plus renews at $4.99 a month or local currency, which is what a non-US buyer should budget. On September 23, 2026, Plus in France was 4.99 euros (400 GB) and Pro was 21.99 euros (5 TB) on the plans page. A May 19, 2026 post prices US Ultra at $100 a month for 5x Pro usage and $200 a month for 20x, down from $250.
The catch: Usage refreshes every five hours until a weekly cap, and Spark is limited by country.

Microsoft 365 Copilot, when the job is in Office
Microsoft 365 Copilot is the assistant for a company already in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams. Use the enterprise pricing page and the business pricing page.
The enterprise add-on is the table price, paid yearly, on top of a qualifying Microsoft 365 license, so the table number is not the whole invoice. Copilot Business is $18.00 a user per month yearly through December 31, 2026, against a $21.00 list price. The discount runs from July 1, first year only, with an annual commitment, and only for existing eligible Business customers. Standard with Copilot is $23.50 yearly, Premium with Copilot is $32.00 yearly, and monthly Copilot Business was $25.20.
The catch: Copilot Chat, including Outlook and the Copilot app, is included at no additional cost on eligible plans, so try that included chat before the add-on. Custom agents on that chat are metered. The paid license adds Work IQ, Copilot in the Office apps and Teams, and Researcher, Analyst, and Facilitator. Buying the add-on without the base plan is two invoices.

Perplexity, when the answer needs a source
Perplexity is the assistant when a brief has to name its sources. Consumer cards are on the pricing hub, and enterprise numbers are from Perplexity's billing FAQ.
Free is search with citations and a tight cap. Pro is the table plan, with 4,000 bonus credits on the hub. Max is $200 a month, or $2,000 a year on the web, per the Max help article updated September 14, 2026. Enterprise Pro is $40 a seat per month or $400 a year. Enterprise Max is $325 a seat per month or $3,250 a year. Past 250 seats the price is a quote, and schools, nonprofits, and government get 25% off Enterprise Pro.
The catch: A removed enterprise seat still bills for 30 days, and the first month charges the seats chosen at signup. Store subscriptions do not transfer into an enterprise org, and Max is not a nicer name for Pro.
The research seat, and an expensive mistake if Max is bought for ordinary questions.
Grok, when the feed is part of the question
Grok searches the live web and X, and paid use draws from one weekly pool across chat, images, and video. Rates and limits are on the xAI pricing page and the Grok FAQ, with the matchup in Grok vs ChatGPT.
Free includes web and X search, voice, and connectors, inside a smaller limit. SuperGrok is the table price, with Grok 4.6, higher limits, Expert, and image and video. SuperGrok Plus is $100 a month, with higher usage and 1080p video. Extra Usage Credits on the web start at $5 and expire one year after purchase. SuperGrok Heavy and Enterprise publish no self-serve price.
The catch: Since June 2026, chat, Imagine, voice, and Build share one weekly pool, so video can empty the week. Top-ups cost more per action than the included allowance. A surprise large invoice is often yearly Heavy, not API use, and X Premium is billed by X, not on this page.

Notion, when the workspace is the assistant
Notion is the assistant when the notes, meeting record, and search already live in one workspace. The pricing page bundles the agent into the upper plans.
Free and Plus both include only a trial of Notion AI, so Plus is not the agent. Plus is $10 per member per month. Business is twice that Plus rate per member, and it is the plan with Notion Agent, AI meeting notes, and enterprise search. Enterprise is custom, and it is the plan with zero data retention at the model providers, SCIM, and an audit log. Custom agents are free to try, then $10 per 1,000 monthly Notion credits.
The catch: Free and Plus do not include the agent. Guests do not open the teamspace, a mid-cycle member is a prorated charge, and removing one does not refund that seat until renewal. Notion's own monthly refund window is three days, while EU and UK buyers have the longer statutory window.
The right assistant when the notes are already there, and a poor standalone chat if the workspace is empty.
Mistral, the lower sticker with a tax line
Mistral sells Vibe for chat, search, images, and coding, and the pricing docs exclude tax from the subscription, so the sticker is not the amount due.
Free includes limited messages, search, and coding, plus $10 a month in API credits and 100+ connectors. Pro is the table price, with higher ceilings, all-day coding, support by chat and email, and $30 of API credits a month. Verified students pay $5.99 a month. Team is $24.99 per user per month before tax, with up to 30 GB of storage per user, domain verification, and data export. Flash answers are 150 a day on Pro and 200 a day on Team. Enterprise is a private-deployment quote.
The catch: The card price excludes tax, and images are still capped (up to 40x Free on Pro). API use is a second bill: Mistral Large is $0.50 per million input tokens and $1.50 per million output tokens, with batch at half.
A real alternative on sticker price, once tax and the API line sit in the same spreadsheet.
Poe, one bill for many models
Poe is the assistant when you want several labs on one point pool. The about page says most use is free and advanced use starts at the table price.
The about page sets the floor at $4.99 a month, with monthly and annual plans, and says you can buy more compute points. Poe publishes no per-model rate, so you see the cost only after you spend.
The catch: The subscription is a starting price, not an unlimited pass. A frontier model spends the pool faster than a small one, and the next charge is a points top-up. The about page has no tenant admin comparable to a Business or Team seat.
The cheapest way onto many models, and an open-ended bill if the pool is what you actually use.
Meta AI, the assistant with no seat price
Meta AI is the assistant for research and drafts when you do not need an admin console. It ships in Meta's apps and a Mac download the product page marks as beta. Meta publishes no subscription price.
No plan price is published. The page describes deep research with citations, docs, shopping, and local recommendations, plus email, calendar, an Instagram professional account, Ads Manager, and Google Workspace.
The catch: There is no seat, no published SSO, and no invoice for procurement. Those connections are personal accounts, and citations can draw on public Instagram, Facebook, and Threads posts.
A capable assistant when you will not buy a seat, and not a replacement for a paid workspace.
Pricing: what a team actually pays
Two ChatGPT Business standard seats, billed monthly, are $50 a month before a premium seat. Claude Team uses that same pair of rates, for 2 to 150 people, and adds the SSO personal plans lack. Ten Copilot enterprise users are $300.00 a month on the yearly add-on, on top of Microsoft 365 licenses already paid. The Business promo is a first year only, and only if you already hold an eligible plan.
Perplexity Enterprise Pro at $40 a seat is double consumer Pro, and Enterprise Max is the $325 seat, with removals billed for 30 days. Grok video spends the weekly pool, and a credit top-up costs more per action than SuperGrok Plus. Mistral's card excludes tax, and the API line is separate. Notion's agent starts on Business, not on the trial. Poe's floor is not the invoice if points run out.
How to choose
Stay on ChatGPT when there is no incumbent suite. Read how to use ChatGPT for work before buying Business for two people who only needed Plus. Move to Claude when the file is long and the terminal can share the pool. Move to Gemini or Copilot when the files already live there.
Use Perplexity when a citation is the point, and keep Max off the card until Pro runs out. Use Grok for what is public right now, Notion when the pages are the knowledge base, Mistral when the pre-tax sticker is the constraint, Poe to sample models, and Meta AI when you will not take a subscription. Code belongs with AI code assistants, and neighboring lists are ChatGPT alternatives, AI search engines, and free AI tools.
Common mistakes
Buying Go and expecting Plus misses the model and the ads. Think mode stays on GPT-5.6 Luna, Sol is excluded, and Go may show ads. Plus is the ad-free individual plan, billed monthly only.
Treating Claude's annual Pro as a small monthly charge misses the prepaid invoice. Month to month costs $3 more, and the terminal shares that pool with chat.
Carrying an old US Google AI Plus price forward. Non-US Plus renews at the rate in the Gemini section, France was 4.99 euros on September 23, and the top Ultra tier was cut from $250.
Adding Copilot at the enterprise rate before checking included Copilot Chat. The paid license is Work IQ and the Office apps. The Business promo is first-year only, for existing eligible customers, through December 31, 2026.
Trying to start the paused 20x Pro tier while the 5x tier remains for sale. Canceling an existing 20x plan can end access you cannot repurchase until the pause lifts, aside from a one-time return for eligible accounts.
Buying Perplexity Max for a Pro workload. Removed enterprise seats stick for 30 days, and a store subscription does not move into the org.
Emptying Grok's week on video, then buying credits. That costs more per action than moving up a plan, and a huge unexpected charge is often yearly Heavy, not the API.
