Key factsGrok vs ChatGPT in 2026: Grok wins on real-time X data and price, ChatGPT on ecosystem
  • Updated: September 25, 2026
  • Grok 4.7 costs $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens, versus GPT-6 Astra's $10 and $50.
  • SuperGrok costs $30/month and SuperGrok Plus costs $100/month, while ChatGPT Go costs $8/month and Plus costs $20/month.
  • Grok has native real-time access to X posts, while ChatGPT only searches the web and has no native X feed access.
  • OpenAI announced GPT-6 Astra on September 3, 2026, and paused new $200 ChatGPT Pro sign-ups since September 10, 2026.
  • GPT-6 Astra scored 98% on FrontierMath Tier 4 and 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3, according to OpenAI's launch post.

Short answer: Grok wins for real-time news and trends thanks to native X integration, looser guardrails and much cheaper API pricing (Grok 4.7 at $2/$6 per million tokens vs GPT-6 Astra at $10/$50). ChatGPT wins on ecosystem breadth: GPT-6 models, Codex, Voice, ChatGPT Work and far more integrations. For daily knowledge work, ChatGPT is still the default; for news-driven research and social-sentiment work, Grok is genuinely competitive.

Both products moved fast in 2026. xAI now lists Grok 4.7 as its most capable model in the API, while its consumer SuperGrok plan runs Grok 4.6. OpenAI announced GPT-6 Astra on September 3, 2026 and added GPT-6 Sol and Luna on September 22. Prices below were verified on each vendor's pages in September 2026.

What each AI actually is

Grok is xAI's chatbot, launched in November 2023. It is available at grok.com, in the X app and through the xAI API. The API lineup runs from Grok 4.3 (1M-token context, cheapest) up to Grok 4.7 (500K context, the model xAI recommends for most use cases). Grok was designed from launch with looser content guardrails and direct access to X's social feed.

ChatGPT is OpenAI's chatbot, launched in November 2022. In Chat, paid plans run GPT-5.6 Sol with a thinking slider and Free and Go run GPT-5.6 Luna; GPT-6 Astra shows up as GPT-6 Pro on the Pro plans and in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, per OpenAI's model guide.

Pricing

Grok (xAI), per xAI pricing and the Grok plans page:

  • Free: real-time web and X search, voice mode, within usage limits
  • SuperGrok Lite: a lighter paid tier; check the plans page for the current price
  • SuperGrok $30/month: Grok 4.6, Grok Bot, Expert mode, image and video generation, higher limits
  • SuperGrok Plus $100/month: significantly higher usage, 1080p video, priority access at peak times
  • SuperGrok Heavy: highest usage and a larger team of collaborating agents, with X Premium+ included; xAI shows its price at checkout rather than on the pricing page
  • API: Grok 4.7 at $2/M input and $6/M output under 200K tokens; Grok 4.3 at $1.25/$2.50

ChatGPT (OpenAI), per ChatGPT pricing and the help center:

Cost reality: against OpenAI's flagship, Grok 4.7 is 5x cheaper on input and more than 8x cheaper on output. Against GPT-6 Sol, the input price is identical and Grok is cheaper on output only. On the consumer side, ChatGPT's paid ladder starts lower ($8 Go, $20 Plus) than Grok's $30 SuperGrok.

When Grok wins

Real-time X access. This is Grok's biggest moat. Ask what people are saying about a product launch today and Grok pulls live X posts, ranks them and summarizes. ChatGPT can search the web but has no native access to the X feed. For social listening, brand monitoring and trend research, Grok is the right tool.

Looser content guardrails. Grok refuses fewer borderline prompts than ChatGPT. For edge-case business requests (competitor analysis, security research, controversial topics), Grok often answers where ChatGPT hedges. Both still have guardrails; Grok's sit further out.

Multi-agent reasoning. SuperGrok Heavy uses a larger team of agents that collaborate on one answer, and xAI sells a dedicated multi-agent model in the API. For research synthesis across many sources, that parallel approach is a real differentiator.

API cost against OpenAI's flagship. If your workload needs a top model and Grok 4.7 is good enough, paying a fifth of Astra's input price and about an eighth of its output price changes the economics of a product. Grok 4.3 goes lower still and keeps a 1M-token window.

Built-in X perks at the top tier. SuperGrok Heavy includes X Premium+ at no extra cost, which matters if you already pay for X.

When ChatGPT wins

GPT-6 on hard tasks. OpenAI publishes results such as 98% on FrontierMath Tier 4 and 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3 for GPT-6 Astra in its launch post. Those are vendor figures, but Astra is the model to test first for hard reasoning and computer use. Note the plan gate: in Chat, GPT-6 Pro requires a Pro plan.

Codex for coding. Codex is included on every ChatGPT plan and runs in ChatGPT on the web, the desktop app, a CLI and an IDE extension. Grok Build exists, but Codex has the larger ecosystem.

Voice. ChatGPT Voice can call GPT-5.6 or GPT-6 Astra for harder questions and use plugins during a conversation, according to OpenAI's release notes. For hands-free work and language practice, it is the more complete product.

Ecosystem breadth. ChatGPT connects to a long list of apps and now has add-ins for Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Grok's third-party integrations (connectors) are newer.

ChatGPT Work and deep research. Work creates documents, spreadsheets and presentations and handles browser tasks from one place. Deep research is available on every plan, with the highest limits on Plus and Pro.

A note on custom GPTs. They were long a ChatGPT advantage, but OpenAI announced in September 2026 that it plans to retire them and migrate them to plugins. Do not choose ChatGPT for custom GPTs alone.

Real-world comparison: which one to use when

Use Grok when:

  • You need real-time social sentiment or trend analysis from X
  • You keep hitting ChatGPT's guardrails on legitimate research
  • You build on the API and need a strong model well below GPT-6 Astra's price
  • You want multi-agent answers for complex research questions
  • You already pay for X and want the Heavy bundle

Use ChatGPT when:

  • You want OpenAI's GPT-6 models for hard reasoning or computer use
  • You code with Codex
  • Voice is part of your daily use
  • You need broad third-party integrations, including Microsoft Office
  • You want the cheapest paid entry point (Go or Plus)

Benchmarks: what the vendors publish

xAI and OpenAI do not publish a shared head-to-head table, so there is no clean benchmark verdict between Grok 4.7 and GPT-6. OpenAI's headline Astra numbers are listed above. xAI's model documentation focuses on capabilities, context sizes and prices rather than a comparison against GPT-6.

Our advice: test your own prompts. On our daily work, Grok tends to win on speed and current events, ChatGPT on depth and follow-through on long tasks.

The honest take after using both daily

Grok feels faster, more direct and less hedged. It is good for "give me the answer" use cases, and the X integration is genuinely useful for social-driven work. The downside is that Grok occasionally produces output that needs more nuance; sometimes that is a feature, sometimes a bug.

ChatGPT feels more polished and integrated. It does more, with more ecosystem support, and GPT-6 raised the ceiling on hard tasks. The downside is that its guardrails sometimes get in the way of legitimate work, and GPT-6 Pro in Chat sits behind the Pro plans.

For most professionals, ChatGPT remains the default. For users whose work involves X, real-time trends or frequent guardrail friction, Grok is the right alternative.

FAQ

Is Grok better than ChatGPT?

For real-time news and X-based social data, yes. For Codex, Voice, Office integration and the broader ecosystem, ChatGPT is more mature. For pure reasoning and writing quality, they are competitive, and the decision depends on your workload.

How much does Grok cost compared to ChatGPT?

Grok's paid consumer plans start at $30 a month for SuperGrok and $100 for SuperGrok Plus, with SuperGrok Heavy above that. ChatGPT runs from $8 (Go) and $20 (Plus) to $100 or $200 for Pro, with new Pro $200 sign-ups paused since September 10, 2026. On the API, Grok 4.7 is about 5x cheaper than GPT-6 Astra on input and priced like GPT-6 Sol.

Does Grok have access to real-time information?

Yes, more directly than ChatGPT. Grok pulls live X posts natively and searches the web on every plan, including Free. ChatGPT searches the web but does not have native access to the X feed.

Is Grok more "uncensored" than ChatGPT?

Grok has looser guardrails on borderline cases, but it is not uncensored in any absolute sense. For legitimate research that ChatGPT hedges on, Grok often gives a more direct answer. For genuinely harmful requests, both decline.

Can I use Grok for free?

Yes. Grok's free plan at grok.com and in the X app includes real-time web and X search and voice mode within usage limits. For Grok 4.6, Expert mode and image and video generation, you need SuperGrok at $30 a month.

Which is better for coding, Grok or ChatGPT?

ChatGPT, mainly because Codex is included on every plan, runs GPT-6 models and works across the web, desktop app, CLI and IDE. Grok Build is newer. See our Claude vs ChatGPT for coding and Codex vs Claude Code guides for the developer-specific comparison.
