Short answer: stay on Plus at $20/month unless you regularly hit limits or need GPT-6 Pro in Chat. Pro starts at $100/month (Pro 100) and adds GPT-6 Pro and bigger context windows. Plus has cost $20/month since its 2023 launch, through every model upgrade, and it is still the right tier for most users. It includes:
- GPT-6 Sol in Chat, with a thinking slider for Instant, Medium and High, plus GPT-5.6 Sol as a separate option
- GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol inside ChatGPT Work and Codex, with a limited Astra allowance of 5 to 45 in OpenAI's Codex usage table
- A 54K-token Instant context window and 256K for reasoning
- Expanded messages, uploads, memory and deep research
- Projects, scheduled tasks and Sites
- Expanded Codex usage and the Codex app for macOS and Windows
- Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Sheets extensions
- Image generation, including image generation with thinking
- No ads (ads can appear on Free and Go)
For most professionals, Plus limits do not bind during normal use. The two things Plus does not include are GPT-6 Pro in Chat and the Extra High thinking level.
When does Plus stop being enough?
Look at Pro if any of these happen regularly:

At that price, it pays for itself if it saves about two hours of a $50-an-hour professional's time.
ChatGPT Pro 200 and Pro 500
Pro 200 is the heavy-use tier:
- More included usage than Pro 100
- GPT-6 Pro on its own weekly allowance; when you reach it, ChatGPT switches to GPT-5.6 Thinking at Medium, and GPT-5.6 Sol Pro stays available within its daily allowance
- GPT-6 Astra included in the regular Codex allowance
- The same 400K reasoning context window as Pro 100
The important caveat: Pro 200 reopened to new subscribers on September 29, 2026, with a lower included allowance than the plan had before. The price is unchanged. Anyone with an active Pro 200 subscription between September 22 and September 29 keeps the previous allowance through October 29, 2026, then moves to the new one.
Pro 500 is the new top tier, launched the same day. It has the highest included usage of the three and is the only Pro plan with Ultrafast for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol in Work and Codex. Ultrafast draws on your allowance at 8 times the Standard rate, and buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 does not add it.

Which Pro tier should you pick?
If you have decided Plus is not enough, ask yourself:
- Do you hit the shared GPT-6 Pro allowance on Pro 100 every week? If yes, Pro 200 gives GPT-6 Pro its own allowance. If not, Pro 100.
- Do you run Codex on GPT-6 Astra all day? Pro 200 gives more included usage; Pro 500 adds Ultrafast if speed is worth the faster burn.
- Do you need a bigger context window? Not a reason to pay more: every Pro tier lists 400K for reasoning.
- Are you an existing Pro 200 subscriber? Your previous allowance ends on October 29, 2026, so re-check whether Pro 100 now covers you.

Hidden costs of staying on Plus
If you are a heavy user, the hidden cost of Plus is time spent waiting for limits to reset. A user who hits a cap at 11 AM and waits until early afternoon pays the Plus fee plus hours of forced downtime. For a professional billing $150 an hour, a few hours of waiting costs more than a month of Pro.
Track one week: how often do you hit Plus limits? If the answer is more than once or twice, Pro 100 pays for itself.
What about ChatGPT Business or Enterprise?
