10 Best Payment Processing Software Tools in 2026

Trusted by750,000+ Techpresso subscribers·426 AI tools reviewed·Editorial team

Short answer: Stripe at 2.9% + 30¢ per successful US online card, with no monthly fee, when you sell online. Square Free is the tap-card pick at 2.6% + 15¢, Helcim when a published interchange margin beats a flat rate, and PayPal Checkout at 3.49% + $0.49 when the buyer already pays that way.

A flat online rate is the wrong default once the register, or a bank debit, does most of the month, because those channels are priced apart from the online card. Dupple data: Toolradar, our software directory, evaluated 183 payment processing tools as of September 2026, on its payment processing ranking. Prices were checked on September 23, 2026, on each vendor's own site. The payment gateways guide covers integration and sales tax, and this page is the fee on the statement.

What payment processing software does

Payment processing software authorizes a card or a bank payment, deposits the money, and shows the fee on a statement you can reconcile.

A gateway transmits the payment, while processing software adds the merchant account, the payout, the dispute desk, and the rate you forecast. Stay on the gateways guide if the question is who remits VAT, and stay here if the question is the fee on a ticket. Invoices live in invoicing software, and the register lives in POS systems.

How we chose

Toolradar's payment processing category lists 183 tools, updated September 2026, and this page ranks 10 a finance lead can put on a statement. Each pick has a rate, or an honest "custom," on the vendor's site, a live product, and a weakness that changes the bill, with prices read on September 23, 2026. No vendor paid for a place on this list, and the directory order is not the order below.

Merchant-of-record checkouts stay on the gateways guide, because that buyer is choosing tax liability rather than a processing fee. Clover prices processing apart from the software plan, and restaurant and retail bundles route through sales, so a Clover counter belongs with restaurant POS systems until the rate is on the page you sign.

1

Stripe, the default when the sale is online

Stripe is the default when the monthly software line has to be zero, for a store that pays when a card succeeds. Domestic online cards are 2.9% + 30¢ per successful transaction, with no setup, monthly, or closure fee, and the pricing policy was last modified July 20, 2026.

Who it's for: Online sellers who accept a blended rate and do not need a printed tap price.

Pricing

Manual entry costs more than that online rate, international cards add 1.5%, and currency conversion adds 1%. ACH Direct Debit is 0.8% with a $5 cap on standard timing, or 1.2% for two-day timing. A failed ACH payment is $4, instant bank validation is $1.50, and instant payouts are 1.5% of volume, minimum 50¢. A dispute costs $15 to receive and another $15 if you answer by hand, returned only if you win.

The catch: That card line is online, so a counter belongs with Square or Helcim, and Billing is a separate meter, so subscriptions can cost extra.

Verdict

Use Stripe when the payment is online and the schedule has to stay public.

2

Square, when the counter and the website are one system

Square Free has no monthly subscription, for one location at the counter and on a site. Tap, dip, or swipe is 2.6% + 15¢, the cheap channel. Online and invoice cards are 3.3% plus Stripe's online fixed fee, and keyed cards or cards on file are 3.5% plus the in-person fixed fee on every plan.

Who it's for: One location that wants a register, invoices, and a basic site together.

Pricing

Plus is $49 a month per location and cuts in-person cards to 2.5% plus that fixed fee, while online cards fall to Stripe's domestic rate. Premium is $149 a month per location and cuts in-person cards to 2.4% plus that fixed fee, and both include a 30-day trial. API cards stay on Stripe's online rate, invoice ACH is 1% with a $1 minimum on Free, paid plans add a $10 cap, and above $250,000 a year Square moves to custom pricing.

The catch: Support is weekday hours for 90 days on Free, weekday hours on Plus, and 24/7 on Premium. Gift-card loads are 2.5% on Free and Plus and 0% on Premium, and a second location doubles Plus before the card rate changes.

Verdict

Choose Square when people pay in the room and on the site, and reprice Plus before you open another location.

3

Helcim, when the margin has to be on the statement

Helcim bills interchange plus a margin, with no account monthly fee, no minimum, and no statement fee. The US fee disclosure, updated February 2, 2026 and effective April 1, 2026, sets tier 1 (up to $50,000 a month) at interchange + 0.40% + 8¢ in person and interchange + 0.50% + 25¢ keyed or online. Compare that margin with a flat rate, because interchange still sits under it.

Who it's for: Merchants who will read an interchange statement and skip a blended rate they cannot audit.

Pricing

Tiers follow a three-month rolling average. At $1,000,001 a month and above, the margin is interchange + 0.15% + 6¢ in person and interchange + 0.15% plus a smaller online fixed fee than tier 1. ACH under $25,000 uses GoCardless Standard's percentage plus 25¢, capped at $6, and a winning chargeback fee is refunded. The reader is $199, the terminal is $349 or 12 payments of $32 (total $384), and recurring payments add 0.4%.

The catch: Helcim passes interchange through, so premium cards cost more at the same margin. International Visa adds 1.45% + 4¢, and you cannot quote one rate without the card mix.

Verdict

Choose Helcim when you want off a blended rate and someone will check the mix.

4

PayPal, when the button is the reason

PayPal Checkout is 3.49% + $0.49 on a domestic commercial payment in US dollars, the line when the buyer wants that wallet. A standard card is 2.99% plus the same fixed fee, QR codes are 2.29% plus a $0.09 fee, and international commercial payments add 1.50%.

Who it's for: Stores whose buyers already hold a PayPal balance, not teams hunting a lower card rate.

Pricing

An invoice card or Apple Pay is 2.99% + $0.49, and Pay by Bank is 1% capped at $10. The invoicing plan is $14.99 a month on top of the rate, currency conversion adds a 4% spread, and disputes run $20 outside checkout, $15 on a standard dispute, and $30 in the high-volume band.

The catch: Checkout overstates an invoice, because the card-on-invoice percentage is lower, and the fixed fee hurts a small ticket.

Verdict

Add the button when buyers ask for it, and keep it on its own forecast line.

5

Braintree, when PayPal, Venmo, and cards are one platform

Braintree prices US cards at 2.89% + $0.29, and the fee page was last updated May 7, 2026. Venmo matches PayPal Checkout, a chargeback is $15, and refunds keep the processing fee.

Who it's for: Teams that want PayPal, Venmo, and cards in one settlement, without an interchange statement.

Pricing

A non-USD currency adds 1%, and a foreign-issued card adds that surcharge again. Standard ACH is 0.75%, with Stripe's five-dollar cap, and same-day ACH costs more and adds $0.10. Charities pay 2.19% + $0.29, and Chargeback Protection starts at 0.4% per transaction.

The catch: On the worked card below, Braintree is two cents under Stripe, which is not a savings plan, and approval is an application, so the rate is not guaranteed.

Verdict

Use Braintree when the wallets should settle with the cards, and skip it for that two-cent gap.

6

Authorize.net, when the monthly gateway fee is the point

Authorize.net starts every plan at $25 a month, even in a quiet month. All-in-one adds Stripe's US online card formula, if you qualify, and includes the merchant account. Gateway only is 10¢ per transaction plus a 10¢ daily batch, with the merchant account separate, and US eCheck on the third plan is 0.75%.

Who it's for: A virtual terminal and recurring billing, with a merchant account you have or will take from them.

Pricing

There is no setup fee and no early-termination fee on the gateway. Fraud rules, a customer vault, and 24/7 live support are included, and above $500,000 a year the price is tailored. All-in-one matches Stripe's card math and then still posts the month.

The catch: Gateway-only looks cheap until the other processor's rate arrives, and the all-in-one percentage is not guaranteed before approval.

Verdict

Choose it when the terminal is the product you can budget by the month.

7

Airwallex, when cards sit next to multi-currency balances

Airwallex lists domestic cards at 2.80% + $0.30 and international cards at 4.30% + $0.30. Explore has no per-user fee and includes up to 10 free Spend users, while Grow is $12 per user a month plus a platform fee that is not published.

Who it's for: Companies paid in several currencies that still want a card percentage on the site.

Pricing

The fee is per legal entity, and processing fees still apply. Signups before June 1, 2025 kept prior pricing and moved to Explore on July 1, 2025. Like-for-like settlement covers 20 or more currencies. A seat holds a card or touches an expense or a bill that period.

The catch: International cards use the higher line before foreign exchange, and leaving Explore adds an unpublished platform fee.

Verdict

Model the domestic line when you pay out in several currencies, and stay on Explore until that platform fee is in writing.

8

GoCardless, when the payment is an ACH pull

GoCardless is bank debit, not cards, so skip it when the customer must pay by card. Standard is 0.5% + $0.05, capped at $5 domestically. Advanced is 0.75% plus that fixed fee, capped at $6.25, and Pro is 0.9% plus that fixed fee, capped at $7, so the higher rows cost more per debit. International Standard is 1.5% plus the fixed fee, the cap is domestic only, and prices exclude sales tax.

Who it's for: Subscriptions and invoices collected by ACH pull, where you do not also need cards.

Pricing

There is no setup fee, though a statement name is a $25 monthly add-on and custom pages are $50 a month on Advanced and Pro. Refunds are $0.50, a failed payment is $5, and a chargeback matches that only after 15 in a month, a February 2024 threshold. Success+ on the higher plans claims retries recover 70% of failures on average.

The catch: Faster ACH is on Advanced and Pro only, despite a two-day payout lead, and you cannot take a card. A mid-size pull beats Stripe's ACH line until both caps bind.

Verdict

Use it for money that should leave a bank on a schedule, not for card sales.

9

Adyen, when interchange++ is worth a sales process

Adyen publishes a global Mastercard rate of $0.13 plus interchange plus 0.60% in the US and Canada. The acquirer piece starts at that markup and depends on volume. Figures are indicative, with no monthly fee, and the minimum invoice depends on the industry but is not printed.

Who it's for: High-volume merchants who will see through a blended rate and finish a sales process.

Pricing

Interchange++ separates the issuer fee, the scheme fee, and Adyen's markup. US settlement is 1 to 2 days, and new customers reach the minimum invoice through sales.

The catch: The markup is not the cost per order until interchange is added, and an unpublished floor can wipe out the gain versus Stripe.

Verdict

Choose Adyen when volume is real, not as the first account for a new store.

10

Checkout.com, when the rate is a conversation

Checkout.com publishes no per-transaction percentage, so a ticket cannot be priced from the site. The rate is flat or interchange++, from your profile and risk, and charities get free processing where it operates. No setup fee, no maintenance fee, 150 or more currencies, and domestic acquiring in 45 or more countries.

Who it's for: Teams that will take a sales call and care about structure more than a number tonight.

Pricing

Fraud tools are described as included, and there is no published seat price. A commercial rate next to Stripe is not on the site, so it stays custom.

The catch: A public page will not price a ticket, so treat it as a quote, and charity processing does not give a commercial store a rate.

Verdict

Ask for the quote after the public rates are already in the spreadsheet.

What you will actually pay

On one $100 domestic online card, Stripe is $3.20, Square Free online is $3.60, a Square Free tap is $2.75, PayPal Checkout is $3.98, Braintree is $3.18, and Airwallex domestic is $3.10, while Airwallex international on that ticket is $4.60. On $10,000 of online volume, Square Free's extra 0.4 percentage points versus Stripe are $40 before cents.

Helcim adds $1.25 to interchange on a $200 keyed or online payment. The same $200 as ACH is $1.60 on Stripe and $1.05 on GoCardless Standard. Authorize.net all-in-one then posts its monthly fee, a second Square location doubles Plus, and Helcim refunds a won chargeback, while other recurring fees belong in subscription management software.

How to choose

Start with Stripe for a US online card and no monthly fee, and with Square Free when people tap. Buy Plus after the cut clears the location fee, and price Helcim's tier 1 margin before you sign a blended rate you will not read. Use Braintree for Venmo and PayPal with cards, Authorize.net for a terminal, Airwallex for several currencies, and GoCardless for a scheduled debit. Call Adyen or Checkout.com when you are ready to leave a blended rate. Payouts land in accounting software for small business or bookkeeping software.

Common mistakes when pricing this stack

  1. Using Stripe's online rate at the counter ignores Square's tap price and Helcim's in-person margin, and the worked tickets above are not interchangeable across channels.

  2. Treating Square's online rate as the tap rate mixes two channels. On the worked ticket, online is $3.60 and a tap is $2.75, and Plus pays for itself only after that gap clears the location fee.

  3. Quoting Helcim as one percentage leaves interchange out. The worked online payment still owes interchange plus $1.25, and international Visa adds 1.45% + 4¢ on top of the margin.

  4. Putting PayPal Checkout on every invoice overstates the bill, because invoice cards are 2.99% plus the same fixed fee and the $14.99 plan does not replace the rate.

  5. Moving to Braintree for that two-cent gap treats a wallet decision as savings. A non-USD currency and a foreign card can each add the Braintree surcharge, and the two can stack.

  6. Reading the 10¢ gateway fee as the full Authorize.net cost skips the daily batch and the separate merchant account, and the all-in-one percentage still waits on approval.

  7. Assuming Standard GoCardless includes two-day payout, or that Adyen's 0.60% is the whole fee, understates both. Faster ACH sits on the higher plans, Adyen still adds interchange, and the minimum invoice stays unpublished.

FAQ

What is the best payment processing software in 2026?

Stripe, for US cards online: 2.9% + 30¢ per successful domestic card, with no monthly fee, verified in September 2026. Square Free is the better default when cards are tapped at 2.6% + 15¢. Helcim fits when you want a published interchange margin, no account monthly fee, and someone to read the statement.

How much does payment processing software cost in 2026?

Square Free and Stripe have no monthly fee. GoCardless Standard is the capped price for an ACH pull, not a card. Authorize.net starts at $25 a month plus a card line, Square Plus is $49 a month per location, and Premium is $149. Adyen prints a markup, not a total, and Checkout.com prints no per-transaction rate. A $100 domestic online card is $3.20 on Stripe and $3.98 on PayPal Checkout.

Is there free payment processing software in 2026?

Square Free, Stripe, Helcim, PayPal Checkout, Braintree, Airwallex Explore, and GoCardless Standard have no monthly software fee, and each still charges per transaction. Authorize.net starts with a monthly fee, Checkout.com's free processing is for registered charities, and Adyen lists no monthly fee plus an unpriced minimum invoice.

How does Stripe compare with Square on a published rate?

Stripe is cheaper online, and Square Free is cheaper when the card is tapped, so the channel decides. Square online cards are 3.3% plus Stripe's online fixed fee. On $10,000 of online volume the gap is $40 before cents. Square Plus meets Stripe's online line and still charges per location.

When does Helcim beat a flat processing rate?

Helcim wins when the card mix clears the margin, not when you need one forecast number. Tier 1, at or below $50,000 a month, adds 0.40% + 8¢ in person or 0.50% + 25¢ online, on top of interchange. At $1,000,001 a month and above, in-person margin is 0.15% + 6¢. You need a statement before you can beat a blended rate.

What is the difference between payment processing software and a payment gateway?

A gateway transmits the payment, and processing software is what you reconcile: authorization, deposit, dispute fee, and rate. This page ranks that layer. The gateways guide ranks integration and who remits tax, including merchant-of-record tools. Clover's processing rate is quoted apart from the software plan, so it waits until that rate is on the contract.

Does Braintree cost less than PayPal Checkout?

Braintree's US card rate is 2.89% + $0.29 if PayPal and Venmo should settle with cards. PayPal Checkout is 3.49% plus that line's fixed fee, and Venmo on Braintree matches checkout, not the card. A non-USD currency and a foreign card each add Braintree's surcharge, and they can stack.

Bottom line

Start with Stripe when the card is online and the monthly fee is zero, Square Free when the card is in the room, and Helcim when you will read an interchange margin. Use PayPal and Braintree for wallets, Authorize.net for a monthly terminal, Airwallex for several currencies, and GoCardless for an ACH pull. Adyen and Checkout.com are a quote after the public rates are in the spreadsheet.

Dupple X tracks these processing fees when they move, or start the trial. Louis Corneloup, founder of Dupple and Toolradar, edited this payment-processing ranking, and the about page names the editorial team.
