What is Airwallex?
Global payments and financial infrastructure platform for businesses managing cross-border transactions.
Airwallex is a finance tool that we've reviewed as part of our directory. Here's what it does well, where it falls short, and whether it's worth your money.
How We Evaluated Airwallex
We scored Airwallex on five things: transaction accuracy, reporting depth, compliance features, integration with banks, and automation. Same rubric we use for every finance tool in the directory, so the scores are comparable.
That meant using the product, testing the features that matter most for finance work, reading the docs, and checking whether pricing is upfront or hidden behind a sales call. We also compared it against Xero and Aplos to see where it stands.
Key Features
What Airwallex actually gives you:
- Core Functionality: Purpose-built feature set for finance workflows
- User Interface: Clean interface designed for productivity
- Integration Support: Connects with popular tools in your stack
Pricing
Airwallex doesn't list pricing publicly on their website, so you'll need to reach out to their sales team for a quote. That's fairly common for tools aimed at larger teams, but it does make it harder to evaluate quickly.
To give you a rough sense of the market, comparable finance tools like Xero and Aplos charge in the range of custom pricing to custom pricing/mo, which should help you calibrate expectations.
Pros and Cons
What we like
- This is a tool built specifically for finance, which means the features are tailored to real use cases in this space rather than being generic functionality that sort of applies
- It replaces hours of manual bookkeeping and data entry with automated workflows, which is the kind of improvement that compounds every single month
- It focuses on doing one thing well rather than trying to be a Swiss Army knife, which usually means the core features get more development attention and polish than they would in an all-in-one platform
What could be better
- Pricing isn't listed publicly, so you'll have to sit through a sales call just to find out if it's in your budget. That alone is a friction point for smaller teams
- Getting the initial configuration right is critical. Mistakes in the setup phase will cascade through your books and create headaches that take much longer to fix than they did to cause
- Larger organizations with complex requirements may find that some of the advanced features they expect from enterprise software are missing or underdeveloped

Who It's For (and Who It's Not)
Good fit: Airwallex makes the most sense for finance teams and accountants who are drowning in manual bookkeeping, reconciliation, and reporting, and need automation to keep the books clean without spending hours on data entry every week. If that sounds like your situation, it's worth at least testing it out.
Skip it if: you're a sole proprietor with straightforward finances. A spreadsheet and your bank's built-in reports will get you through tax season just fine. In that case, you might want to look at Xero as a lighter-weight option.
Bottom Line
We gave Airwallex 3.8/5. Does its core job well. Worth the investment if finance is central to your daily work. If you only need it occasionally, look at a simpler option.
In short: Airwallex is a strong choice for finance teams and accountants who are drowning in manual bookkeeping. you're a sole proprietor with straightforward finances.
Try AirwallexHow Airwallex works
Airwallex is a global business finance platform that bundles multi-currency business accounts, cross-border transfers, corporate cards and spend management, payment acceptance, billing, and embeddable financial APIs. You can hold and receive funds in 20+ currencies, collect like a local in 70+ countries, and send money to 200+ countries in 60+ currencies. The same rails are also sold as infrastructure, so platforms and marketplaces can onboard sub-accounts, accept payments, convert FX and issue cards programmatically.
You open a business account for free, then generate local currency account details so overseas customers pay you domestically instead of routing through SWIFT. FX conversion happens on demand at interbank plus a spread. You can issue unlimited corporate and employee cards with spend controls, budgets and AI-assisted expense policy enforcement. Expenses, reimbursements, bills and purchase orders run through the spend module and sync to QuickBooks, Xero or NetSuite.
On the revenue side, you can take payments through hosted checkout, no-code payment links, or plugins for Shopify, WooCommerce and Magento, with 160+ local payment methods available for invoicing. Billing handles subscriptions and usage-based charges. Everything is also exposed through APIs for programmatic account creation, payouts and card issuing. The platform is PCI DSS, SOC 1 and SOC 2 attested.
Where Airwallex wins
- A real free tier. The Explore plan is $0 per user with up to 10 spend users, unlimited corporate cards, zero international card fees, and free local transfers to 120+ countries.
- FX is priced transparently and cheaply against banks: 0.5% over interbank for major currencies and 1% for the rest, so you can model the cost before you move money.
- Local receiving accounts in 70+ countries let customers pay domestically, avoiding SWIFT fees and delays. Airwallex states that 92% of global transfers land the same day.
- One platform replaces several: business account, cards, expenses, bill pay, invoicing, payment acceptance and payouts, with accounting sync into QuickBooks, Xero or NetSuite.
- The API layer is a genuine product, not an afterthought bolted onto a banking app. Marketplaces and SaaS platforms can embed accounts, FX, payouts and card issuing directly.
Where it falls short
- Card processing is not cheap: 2.8% + $0.30 domestic and 4.3% + $0.30 international. International-heavy ecommerce pays a notable premium versus a dedicated processor.
- SWIFT transfers still cost $15 to $25 each. Only local-rail transfers are free, so payment corridors without local rails stay expensive.
- Paid tiers stack costs. Grow is $12 per user per month plus a platform fee scaled to team size, capped at 250 spend users. Accelerate is custom-priced and supports up to 3 global entities, so very large multi-entity groups run into ceilings.
- Subscription and usage-based billing carries a 0.5% per-transaction fee on top of processing, although plain invoicing is free.
- POS and in-person payments are still listed as coming soon on the business account page, so this is a card-not-present product first.
- Country eligibility to open an account is not published. The site markets regional versions (AU, CA, UK, EU, HK, SG, JP and others) without stating who can and cannot onboard, so verify your jurisdiction before committing.
Who should use Airwallex
Airwallex is aimed at cross-border SMBs and scale-ups that invoice or pay in several currencies: ecommerce sellers, SaaS companies, agencies and marketplaces. If a meaningful share of your revenue or spend crosses a currency boundary, the 0.5% FX spread and the local receiving accounts save real money against a traditional bank, and the free Explore tier means you can test that before paying anything.
It is also a strong pick for platforms that want embedded finance, since account creation, FX, payouts and card issuing are all available through the API rather than only through the dashboard.
It is much less compelling if you are single-currency and domestic, where a local bank plus a dedicated processor will simply be cheaper. Skip it for now if you need in-person or POS acceptance, and think carefully if card processing volume dominates your cost base, because the 2.8% + $0.30 domestic and 4.3% + $0.30 international rates will outweigh the FX savings.
