Is Slack Free in 2026? The Free Plan, History Limits and Paid Plans
Short answer: yes. Slack's Free plan costs $0 and keeps messages searchable for 90 days, with up to 10 app integrations. For a record of decisions, retention is the limit that matters more than price: on Free, Slack permanently deletes messages and files after one year.
Toolradar data: Toolradar's team chat ranking, updated October 23, 2026, evaluated 42 team chat tools, and 8 of the 10 ranked tools have a free plan. Slack is one of those 42, so a free tier is the normal starting point in this category. The real question is where that tier stops. Toolradar's team chat ranking
What the free plan includes
Free covers one workspace with no cap on the number of people. Slack's own FAQ says there are no limits on team size or channel membership. On Free, a team gets channels, direct messages, search over recent messages and a short list of extras:
- Up to 10 app integrations, drawn from a directory of more than 2,600 apps.
- Huddles and Slack Connect limited to one-to-one conversations.
- One workspace, and the workspace is the unit Slack upgrades.
Ten integrations is enough for a team that runs on a handful of tools. It is tight for a team that routes alerts, support tickets and calendar updates into channels. Group huddles and group partner channels start on Pro, so a team that meets as a group or works with several outside companies reaches the paid step sooner than it expects. Slack's plans and features page is the place to check the full list before you commit.
Two other limits are easy to miss. Free and Pro limit posting permissions to the #general channel, while Business+ applies them to any channel. Slack's pricing FAQ says that, soon, Free and Pro users will get a limited Slackbot trial, while ongoing Slackbot access stays with Business+ and Enterprise+.
Retention is the limit that bites
Free runs two clocks that people mix up. The first is search. Messages are saved and searchable for 90 days, and Slack says upgrading gives access to the previous 12 months of messages. The second is retention. Slack's help center says messages and files on Free are stored for one year, and anything older is permanently deleted.
For a team that wants to find last spring's decision, the search window is the wall. For a team that needs an audit trail, retention is the wall, and Free is the wrong tier for that job. Slack's comparison table frames the same point from the other side: paid plans keep data for life by default, with adjustable settings.
Users raised the history limit on Hacker News in 2022 and again in 2024. A commenter wrote in February 2022 that the free plan limits the searches to last 10K messages, a different cap from the time window Slack prints today. A 2024 commenter said Slack moved to a time window a while back. An archived copy of Slack's pricing page from January 14, 2026 prints the same search window and the same paid prices as the live page.
What the paid plans cost
Pro and Business+ are priced per user. Slack's pricing page prints both billing bases in US dollars, as of October 2026:
| Plan | Billed monthly | Billed annually | Message history | App integrations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | No billing | Search window, then one-year retention | Up to 10 |
| Pro | $8.75 per user a month | $7.25 per user a month | Unlimited | Unlimited |
| Business+ | $18 per user a month | $15 per user a month | Unlimited | Unlimited |
Two details change the math. The introductory 50% discount for three months applies to monthly billing, cutting Pro to $4.38 and Business+ to $9 a month. The team has to buy within seven days of creating the workspace, and the page says the offer does not apply to annual plans.
On our arithmetic, a 10-person team on Pro pays $870 a year billed annually, or $1,050 a year billed monthly. The same team on Business+ pays $1,800 a year billed annually. A five-person team on Pro billed annually comes to $435 a year on the same arithmetic, which is the number to weigh against what that team gets from Free.
Two billing rules matter for a team whose size changes. Slack counts a member as active for billing when that person takes an action within a 28-day period, and it adds a prorated credit when a paid member goes inactive. New members are charged a prorated amount for the rest of the current billing period.
Upgrades are all or nothing. Slack's paid vs. free page says you cannot upgrade for yourself, because the whole workspace has to move to a paid plan at once. Nonprofits and educational institutions can apply for special discount pricing through the application pages linked from the pricing FAQ.
How Free compares with Microsoft Teams
Slack is one of several team chat tools with a published price. Microsoft prints Teams Essentials at $4.00 per user a month, paid yearly, with 10 GB of cloud storage per user. For 10 users, that is $480 a year, against $870 for Slack Pro billed annually. The feature sets differ, so compare history and integrations first and price second.
Toolradar's team chat ranking names Microsoft Teams its overall pick and its free pick for 2026. If a long searchable history matters more than Slack's feature set, Slack's Free tier will not meet it, and the ranking is the place to compare the alternatives.
What users say
Slack's App Store listing holds 4.1 out of 5 from 54,442 ratings in the US storefront, as of October 25, 2026. That score covers the app, not the plan, so read it as a signal about the product rather than the free tier.
In June 2024, a commenter wrote that a linked page seems to indicate it was 90 days?, which matches the window Slack prints today. Buyers should treat that window as the number to check before they sign up.
Who should stay on Free, and who should skip it
Stay on Free if your team is small, runs fewer than ten integrations and rarely needs a message from months back. Free works as a live chat room. It is a weak record of decisions.
Skip Free if search over old decisions is part of the job, if a retention or audit rule requires keeping messages past a year, or if the team needs group huddles every day. Pro is the first paid plan. Before you pay Slack's rate, compare Teams Essentials, whose printed annual rate is lower per user, if chat and meetings are the main need and the extra Slack features are not the reason you are paying.
Frequently asked questions
Is Slack free in 2026?
Yes. The Free plan costs $0 and includes one workspace, search over recent messages and up to 10 app integrations. Slack permanently deletes messages and files on Free after one year.
How long does Slack keep messages on the free plan?
Free messages are searchable for 90 days. Slack's help center says messages and files are stored for one year before they are permanently deleted. Upgrading to a paid plan gives access to the previous 12 months of messages.
How much does Slack Pro cost?
Pro costs $8.75 per user a month billed monthly or $7.25 per user a month billed annually, as of October 2026. The introductory 50% discount applies to monthly billing, must be bought within seven days of creating the workspace, and does not apply to annual plans.
Can I upgrade my account on its own?
No. Slack says the whole workspace has to upgrade at once, so one person cannot move to a paid plan on their own while the rest of the team stays on Free.
Does Slack offer free access for students or nonprofits?
Slack's pricing FAQ describes special discount pricing for qualified nonprofits and educational institutions, with an application page for each. The FAQ describes discount pricing, not a free plan, so read the application terms before assuming a team qualifies.
How does Slack Pro compare with Microsoft Teams Essentials?
Microsoft prints Teams Essentials at $4.00 per user a month paid yearly. Slack Pro billed annually is $7.25 per user a month. For 10 users, the printed annual rates come to $480 and $870 a year, and the two products include different features.
