Is Zoom Free in 2026? The 40-Minute Limit and Paid Plans

Trusted by790,000+ Techpresso subscribers·Editorial policy·How we make money

Short answer: yes, with a time cap. Zoom's Basic plan costs nothing and allows 100 participants per meeting, but a meeting a free host runs with others ends when the timer does. Lifting the cap to 30 hours means a paid Workplace Pro license for each host, at $14.16 per user a month billed annually.

Toolradar data: Toolradar evaluated 62 video conferencing tools as of October 24, 2026, and 66% of the 61 it ranks have a free plan. Free tiers are common in this category, so the useful question is where each one stops. Zoom's stops at the time cap. Toolradar's video conferencing ranking lists the full field.

Because the cap decides whether the free tier works for real meetings, it is the detail that matters. This page covers what the cap applies to, what the free plan includes, what a paid license adds, what the paid tiers cost, and how the free plans from Google and Microsoft set their limits.

The free plan against paid

Zoom sells one free tier, Workplace Basic, and paid tiers above it. The table sets Basic against Workplace Pro and Workplace Business, on the annual billing that Zoom prints beside its plan cards.

Meeting length and the cost per host decide most cases. A participant does not need a Zoom account in order to join a meeting, so the license cost sits with whoever starts the call. For a team where most attendees are clients, that matters more than the plan name.

What the free plan includes

Basic is more than a call timer. Its plan card lists instant messaging, VoIP calling, three editable whiteboards and five two-minute clips. It also connects Gmail or Outlook and syncs Google or Microsoft calendars.

The AI features are the thinnest part. Meeting summaries cover three hosted meetings a month, AI queries stop at 20 a month, and AI note-taking allows three uses a month. A host who wants summaries of most calls will hit that limit first.

What the cap covers

Zoom's help article on time limits says almost every meeting a Basic host schedules or runs is capped. Its list of capped configurations includes "1 host, 1 or more participants," which covers a one-to-one call as well as a group. Two people on the free plan get the same timer as a team of ten.

The exception is a meeting the host starts alone. The article says those "will not be restricted" while the meeting stays active, so the exception lasts while the meeting stays open.

A paid account does not lift the cap for a free user. The one exception Zoom names is a paid Zoom Room joining the meeting. The same article says: "Users with Basic (free) licenses on Pro, Business, or Enterprise accounts are limited to the free license meeting durations." A company that buys Pro for its office still has to license each host who runs long meetings.

Users describe the cap in their own words. A Hacker News commenter wrote in May 2020 that the time limit makes meetings feel rushed, because "it's a bother to restart" (comment, May 24, 2020). Another wrote in April 2023 that after free accounts got limits, "we had to reconnect" (comment, April 29, 2023). Rejoining is manual, and that is the trade-off these comments describe.

An hour-long review on the free plan therefore means at least one interruption and a rejoin. Short check-ins never reach the cap.

Workplace Pro costs $14.16 per user a month billed annually, and Workplace Business costs $18.33 on the same basis. Enterprise is quoted through sales, and its card reads "Talk to us."

Zoom bills Workplace Pro and Business once a year, as one upfront charge. The $14.16 and $18.33 figures are annual totals divided by 12, shown for comparison, and Zoom does not charge monthly. Multiply the printed rate by 12 for a host's yearly cost, and the scenario below shows the result for a five-host team.

Paid plans and what they cost: Is Zoom Free in 2026? The 40-Minute Limit and Paid Plans. Last updated October 2026.
Plan, five hosts Per host a year Five hosts a year
Basic (free) $0 $0, with the cap on most meetings
Workplace Pro $169.92 $849.60
Workplace Business $219.96 $1,099.80
Teams Essentials (price comparison) $48.00 $240.00

Each total is the per-user monthly rate times 12, times five hosts. The Teams row compares prices, because the feature sets differ.

What a paid license adds is specific. Pro raises the meeting limit to 30 hours, adds unlimited meeting summaries and unlimited AI document creation, and includes 10 GB of cloud storage per user and live chat support. Business adds single sign-on, managed domains, appointment scheduling and company branding with vanity URLs.

Nonprofits get a different number. Zoom says qualifying nonprofits get "a 50% discount" on Workplace Pro, Workplace Business, Webinars and Large Meetings. Zoom points eligibility questions to its Zoom Cares page, so check there before you plan a budget around the discount.

How the Google Meet and Teams free plans compare

Google's help page says that without a Google Meet subscription you can run "Meetings with 3 or more participants for up to 60 minutes," and one-to-one meetings for up to 24 hours. That makes Google's group cap 20 minutes longer than Zoom's, and its one-to-one cap far longer.

Microsoft's free video conferencing page, as of October 2026, lists "Unlimited group meetings for up to 60 minutes" and "Unlimited one-to-one meetings for up to 30 hours," with up to 100 participants and 5 GB of cloud storage per user. Microsoft also lists Teams Essentials at $4.00 per user a month, paid yearly.

On groups, Zoom's free cap is the shortest of the three. On one-to-one calls, it is the tightest too, since Google and Microsoft allow 24 hours and 30 hours. A team that mostly runs one-to-one calls on the free plan will hit Zoom's limit far sooner than a team on either competitor. Toolradar's Zoom vs Microsoft Teams comparison sets the two side by side.

Who should pay and who should skip

Pay for Workplace Pro when Zoom is a requirement, such as clients who insist on it, or when your hosted meetings regularly run past the free cap. Pro raises the limit to 30 hours for each host you license, so the bill grows with hosts, not attendees.

Skip the paid tier if your calls stay inside the free cap. A solo consultant who runs short client check-ins has little reason to pay. A host who runs long reviews every week does.

Our take: if you want a free plan with longer calls, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams beats Zoom on time. If you need Zoom specifically, pay for one Pro license per host and treat the free plan as a fit for short calls. Teams Essentials, at $4.00 per user a month paid yearly, sits well below Zoom Pro on price, so compare its features before you switch.

Questions

Is Zoom free in 2026?

Yes. Basic costs nothing, but the cap applies to almost every meeting a free host runs with others. A paid license for that host raises the limit to 30 hours.

How long can a free Zoom meeting last?

Most free meetings end when the cap is reached. A meeting the host starts alone stays open while it is active. Teams and Google Meet allow longer group calls on their free plans, so the cap is the first thing to check.

How much does Zoom Pro cost?

Workplace Pro costs $14.16 per user a month billed annually, which comes to $169.92 per host a year. Zoom bills that as one yearly charge, so the monthly figure is for comparison only.

Does Zoom offer a nonprofit discount?

Yes, for nonprofits that qualify. Zoom says they get a 50% discount on Workplace Pro and Workplace Business. Check eligibility on Zoom's Cares page before you budget for it.

Which free plan allows the longest group meeting?

Google Meet and Microsoft Teams both allow group meetings of up to an hour on their free plans. Zoom's free plan allows less.
