Is Gemini Free in 2026? What the Free Plan Really Includes

Trusted by770,000+ Techpresso subscribers·Editorial policy·How we make money

Short answer: yes. Gemini is free without a Google AI plan, and the free plan includes access to Gemini 3 Pro. What it does not include is a fixed number of prompts. Google meters free use with compute-based limits that refresh every five hours, a 32,000-token context window and 15 GB of storage on your Google Account. The cheapest upgrade with a confirmed price, Google AI Pro, costs $19.99 a month.

Free access is the norm in this category, not a special offer. Toolradar data: Toolradar tracks 77 chatbots as of October 10, 2026, and 53% of them are free, freemium or open source. So a free tier is the expected starting point. The useful question is how far the free tier goes before it stops being enough.

The free plan against the paid tiers

Google offers four tiers of Gemini inside the app, free included. Its help page states the paid limits as multiples of the standard limit or of AI Pro rather than as counts, so the table below shows exactly what Google states.

Plan US price Usage limit Context window Models Storage
No AI plan (free) $0 Standard limits 32k tokens Gemini 3 Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro 15 GB
Google AI Plus See note below 2x standard 128k tokens Same three 400 GB
Google AI Pro $19.99/mo or $199.99/yr 4x standard 1 million tokens Same three 5 TB
Google AI Ultra $99.99/mo, billed monthly only 5x or 20x AI Pro 1 million tokens Same three From 20 TB

Google's own help page and AI plans page, both read on October 10, 2026, are the source for every cell.

AI Plus is the cheapest paid step, and it doubles the standard limits. This page does not state its monthly price. Google's plan pages do not show one consistent AI Plus price today, so check the monthly figure at checkout before you subscribe. AI Pro is the lowest paid price we can confirm on a Google page.

What "standard limits" means in practice

Google does not publish a prompt count for the free plan. Its help page says the limits are compute-based. They depend on how complex your prompt is, which model and features you use, and how long your chat has become. A long conversation with the Pro model uses more of the allowance than a quick question answered by Flash, so two free users can get very different amounts of Gemini in the same day.

The allowance refreshes every five hours until you reach a weekly limit. A heavy afternoon can use up the window, and the next one opens five hours later, not at midnight. That matters if you work in bursts. Someone running a long research session in one sitting may hit the wall, then find the window has reopened when they return.

Google also says limits may change without notice. The numbers you see today are not a promise for next month. To check where you stand, open gemini.google.com, select Settings, then Usage Limits. That panel shows your own limit, which is more accurate than any figure in a guide like this one.

What the free plan leaves out

Three gaps matter for most readers.

  • Deep Research at high demand. Google says features that use more compute, Deep Research among them, may be unavailable for accounts without a plan during periods of high demand.
  • Long documents. The free context window is 32,000 tokens. Google's own ratio puts its 1-million-token window at up to 1,500 pages of text, so the free window holds about 48 pages at once by the same ratio. That covers a contract or a short report. It does not cover a book or a large codebase.
  • Storage. The 15 GB is for your whole Google Account. Google AI Plus moves you to 400 GB and AI Pro to 5 TB, which matters only if you already store files in Google's apps.

The model is not the gap. Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro are listed for every tier, including no plan. What changes with payment is how much of each model you can use and how long a chat can get. That is why a free user can try the Pro model before paying, and why the paid upgrade only makes sense once you keep hitting a limit.

The Gemini API free tier, for builders

The Gemini app and the Gemini API are separate products, and the API has its own free tier. Google's pricing page lists Gemini 3 Flash Preview on the free tier at no charge. On the paid tier the same model costs $0.50 per million input tokens (text, image or video) and $3.00 per million output tokens. The pricing table also marks free-tier data as used to improve Google's products. Paid-tier data is not used that way.

Rate limits are a separate question. The free tier has no spend-based limit, but requests per minute and per day vary by model, and daily quotas reset at midnight Pacific time. Google sets those rules on its rate-limit page, and the per-model numbers change, so read the limit for your model before you build anything on it. Preview models can also change price and limits, so treat the free rate as a prototype allowance, not a production plan.

When the free plan is enough and when to pay

Stay on the free plan if you ask a few questions a day, your chats stay short and Flash answers are good enough for your work.

Look at AI Pro if you hit the five-hour or weekly limit most weeks, or if your documents need the 1-million-token window. AI Pro costs $239.88 over twelve months if you pay monthly, or $199.99 if you pay for the year up front. The annual plan saves $39.89 and works out to $16.67 a month. Paying annually only makes sense if you are sure you will still use it in month twelve.

Consider AI Plus if you want more room than the free plan but do not need Pro's 5 TB or its 4x limits.

Some buyers qualify for a free year through separate offers with their own deadlines. How to get Gemini Pro for free covers those routes. If you are weighing a free year on another assistant, see how to get ChatGPT Plus for free and how to get Perplexity Pro for free.

How the free tiers compare

Other assistants have the same paid-tier question, so ChatGPT Plus vs Pro and Claude vs ChatGPT show the trade-offs there, and best AI assistant compares them side by side.

Methodology

We read Google's own pages on October 10, 2026: the Gemini Apps limits help page, the Google AI plans page for US prices, the Gemini API pricing page and the API rate-limit page. The chatbot count and free-tier share come from our live chatbot ranking, checked the same day, and the Gemini entry is on Toolradar. We did not run the limits ourselves, so every limit here is Google's own wording, not a measurement.
