Is Figma Free in 2026? What the Starter Plan Really Includes

Trusted by780,000+ Techpresso subscribers·Editorial policy·How we make money

Short answer: yes. Figma's Starter plan costs $0 and includes unlimited drafts, unlimited viewers and 150 AI credits a day. The limit that decides it is the team folder, which holds 3 Figma Design or Sites files, 3 FigJam files and 3 Slides files. A paid editing seat, the Professional full seat, costs $16 a month billed annually.

Toolradar data: Toolradar evaluated 439 UI/UX design tools as of Oct 2026, and 6 of the 10 picks on its ranking have a free plan. The useful question is where a free tier stops, not whether one exists. Toolradar's UI/UX ranking

The free plan against Professional

Figma sells one free plan and several paid seat types. The table sets Starter against a Professional full seat on annual billing, which is the default the pricing page selects.

What you get Starter (free) Professional, full seat
Price $0 $16/mo billed annually
Drafts (files outside a folder) Unlimited Unlimited
Files in the team folder 3 Design or Sites, 3 FigJam, 3 Slides Unlimited files and projects
AI credits 150 a day, up to 500 a month 3,000 a month
Version history 30 days Included
Team libraries Not included Included
Dev Mode handoff Not included Included
Variables and modes Variables only, no modes Variables with 10 modes
Viewers (view, comment, inspect, export) Unlimited Unlimited
Figma MCP server 20 tool calls a month 200 tool calls a day, 10 a minute

Two rows decide most cases: the folder cap and team libraries. A solo designer working in three files can stay on Starter. A team that shares components cannot, because team libraries sit on the paid side of the line.

What the free plan actually covers

Starter gives each account one team with one folder. Anything you have not moved into that folder is a draft, and drafts are unlimited. Drafts suit experiments, rough sketches and work you are not ready to show anyone yet.

Drafts are also a weak place for collaboration. On Starter you can invite collaborators to a draft only with view access. Giving someone edit access to a draft requires a paid plan, so a free account cannot hand a colleague the pen on work that lives outside the folder.

The folder is where the cap bites. It holds three Figma Design or Sites files in total, three FigJam files and three Slides files.

Buzz has no file limit on Starter. Make has no file limit either, but your usage is capped by the monthly AI credit allowance. Figma's Starter plan help article states each of these limits, and it is the source for every file count on this page.

Viewers are the part of the free plan that scales without a cap. Starter includes unlimited viewers, so you can invite as many people as you want to view, comment, inspect or export your files at no cost.

Rollback is the weaker part. Figma's pricing page says auto-save creates a version every 30 minutes, but Starter keeps only 30 days of that history. A mistake older than a month is gone on the free plan.

What the free plan leaves out

Four gaps matter for most teams, and each one maps to a paid feature.

Team libraries. Starter has no shared component library. Every file carries its own buttons, colors and styles, so a second designer rebuilds what the first one already made. It is the first gap most teams hit once a second designer joins.

Dev Mode handoff. Starter does not include Dev Mode handoff or advanced inspection, and it has no annotations or measurements for developers. A developer working from a Starter file has less to go on than one on a paid seat, and handoff is where design and engineering time gets lost.

Advanced prototyping. Multiple actions, conditional logic and expressions are paid features. Starter prototypes can still use interactive prototypes, advanced animations, transitions and overlays. Video inside a prototype is limited to clips from the Figma Community on Starter, while Professional can upload its own footage.

Sharing and control. Starter has no private folders, no SSO, no publishing in Figma Sites and no template publishing in Slides or Buzz. It also caps Figma MCP tool calls at 20 a month, against 200 a day on Professional, which matters if your team uses the MCP server in daily work.

What paid seats cost

Figma prices seats, not plans. Each paid tier has three seat types: a full seat for people who create and edit, a cheaper Dev seat aimed at engineers, and a cheaper Collab seat for people who mainly review. The table shows the US dollar rates on Figma's pricing page. Each row uses annual billing, the default the page selects.

Plan Full seat Dev seat Collab seat
Professional $16/mo $12/mo $3/mo
Organization $55/mo $25/mo $5/mo
Enterprise $90/mo, billed annually, contact sales $35/mo $5/mo

The pricing page lists monthly rates separately, and this page quotes annual rates throughout, so the arithmetic below is comparable from one line to the next.

One editor on Professional comes to $192 a year at the annual rate. A three-person design team where all three edit pays $576 a year. Add one engineer on a Dev seat and the bill is $720 a year.

The same three editors on Organization pay $1,980 a year, which is $1,404 more than Professional, for shared fonts and centralized admin tools. That step only pays off when those features are the reason you need Organization.

Paid plans also let others view and comment on your files without buying a seat. So the seat count is the number of people who need to create, edit or inspect, not everyone who looks at the work.

Students and teachers can get a paid Figma tier for free

Figma's education page is the one free route to a paid tier. Teachers and students over 13 can sign up themselves, verify their education status and create an Education team, and they then get the Professional tier at no cost. The eligibility test is a structured classroom. Figma counts high schools, universities, trade schools, colleges, bootcamps, online courses and design academies as classrooms.

Students under 13 come through their school, which must contact Figma and sign its terms for schools. That route gives access to the Enterprise tier. K-12 districts qualify for Enterprise, and higher education institutions and bootcamps qualify for Professional. The page says Figma and FigJam are free for students, educators and schools, with no freemium limits or hidden upgrades.

Because the offer is tied to a classroom, an education account is not a general free upgrade for a freelancer or a side project. If you are not in one of those settings, the Starter plan is the free option.

When the free plan is enough

Stay on Starter when you design alone or work with people who only need to view, when three files in the folder cover your current work, and when you do not need shared components or Dev Mode. Thirty days of version history is enough for most solo review cycles, and the unlimited drafts give you room to explore before you commit a file to the folder.

You will know you have outgrown the free plan when a second designer starts rebuilding components that already exist, when a developer asks for handoff specs, or when a fourth project needs a place in the folder. Each of those triggers ends at the same place: a paid seat. For a single editor, that is $192 a year at the annual rate. Start there before you pay for a team.

If the three-file cap is the blocker and you want to stay free, our figma alternatives guide lists other design tools with their own free limits, and Penpot on Toolradar is one to compare. Best free graphic design software covers the free tiers across the category, including Figma's.

How Figma's free plan fits the category

Starter includes components, auto layout, advanced drawing tools and interactive prototypes, so a solo designer can build a real product interface without paying. The limits sit on files, team features and AI credits.

How we checked this

We read Figma's pricing page, its Starter plan help article and its Figma for Education page on October 10, 2026, and quote them as they stand. Every price and limit here is verified on vendor pages, Oct 2026. Prices are in US dollars, which the pricing page states.

We did not run the limits ourselves, so every limit here is Figma's own wording, not a measurement. The Toolradar figures come from our UI/UX ranking, checked the same day. Each cost is annual-billing arithmetic on the rates above.
