Is Wix Free in 2026? What the Free Plan Includes
Short answer: yes. Wix's free plan costs $0 and includes up to 500MB of storage and a wixsite.com address. It also shows Wix ads on every page. A custom domain, ad removal and online payments all need a paid plan.
Toolradar data: Toolradar's website builders ranking, updated October 23, 2026, counts 209 tools evaluated and says 8 of its 10 top picks have a free plan. Wix ranks first on that list, and Toolradar calls it the highest-listed tool with a free plan. When most of the category offers a free tier, the limits on that tier decide more than the tier does. The free plan against Light
Light is the first paid plan Wix lists. Upgrading Your Wix Site, as of October 25, 2026, compares free and upgraded sites line by line. The table uses the free-versus-upgraded rows from Wix's upgrade article and the Light card on Wix plans.
| What you get | Free | Light, first paid plan |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $0, no credit card required | $17.77 a month on a yearly subscription |
| Domain | siteprefix.wixsite.com/siteaddress | Your own domain, plus a free domain for 1 year |
| Wix ads | On every page and in the favicon in the URL | Removed |
| Storage | Up to 500MB | 2 GB |
| Bandwidth | Up to 1GB | Unlimited |
| Online payments | Not included | Not on the Light card; Core, Business and Business Elite list Accept payments |
| Google Analytics | Not included | Included |
| Sites per account | Up to 999 free websites | One site per plan |
The $17.77 figure is the price Wix displays for a yearly subscription. The plans page says: "Displayed prices are for yearly subscriptions, paid in full at the time of purchase." The page also says that prices do not include applicable taxes, which depend on your billing address. Billed as a yearly subscription, Light comes to $213.24 for the year before applicable taxes.
What the free plan covers
Every Wix site uses HTTPS. Wix's help center says "All Wix sites use HTTPS and SSL protocols" (About HTTPS and SSL, as of October 25, 2026). That encrypts traffic between a visitor's browser and the site, and it does not remove the ads or change the address.
Storage and bandwidth are the first limits most sites reach. Wix's storage article says free sites "come with up to 500MB of storage and up to 1GB bandwidth" (About Storage and Bandwidth, as of October 25, 2026). A portfolio built on photos will reach the storage cap first. A blog with little media will rarely reach it.
Wix describes the free site as offering "unlimited pages" alongside its drag and drop builder and free web hosting (Upgrading Your Wix Site, as of October 25, 2026). The plans page lists a drag and drop editor and a large template library for the free plan as well.
Ads are the cost you see first. Wix's upgrade comparison says Wix ads appear on every page and in the favicon in the URL, and it lists removing them as a paid feature (Upgrading Your Wix Site, as of October 25, 2026). For a hobby project, that is a cost you can accept. For a shop or a service business, the ads sit next to your name on every page, which is usually the reason to upgrade.
What the free plan leaves out
Four gaps decide most cases.
Your own domain. Free sites get the wixsite.com address. The plans page says: "With a Premium plan you can connect your own domain, remove Wix branding from your site, and more" (Wix plans, as of October 25, 2026). A brochure site with a wixsite.com address reads as a placeholder to many buyers, so this is the gap most businesses hit first.
Online payments. Free sites cannot take payments. Wix's billing article says: "If you want to accept payments on your site, for example, you must upgrade to a plan that allows you to accept payments" (Wix Billing for Site Plans, as of October 25, 2026).
Google Analytics. The free column in Wix's comparison says Google Analytics is not included, and the upgraded column says it is (Upgrading Your Wix Site, as of October 25, 2026). Anyone who needs traffic numbers from day one should count that as a real cost.
A business email address. No Wix plan includes one. The upgrade article says: "Upgrade plans do not include a business email." You can buy a professional email address once you have a domain in your Wix account (Upgrading Your Wix Site, as of October 25, 2026). A team that needs mail on its own domain has to plan for that cost separately.
Paid plans and how they are billed
The plans page lists four paid tiers: Light, Core, Business and Business Elite. Storage is the clearest difference between them. Wix's storage article lists 2 GB for Light, 50 GB for Core, 100 GB for Business and unlimited storage for Business Elite, with unlimited bandwidth on each (About Storage and Bandwidth, as of October 25, 2026).
The plan cards also set team size. They list 2 site collaborators on Light, 5 on Core, 10 on Business and 100 on Business Elite (Wix plans, as of October 25, 2026). Core is the first card that lists Accept payments, and Business and Business Elite carry it too. Business Elite adds unlimited storage and an advanced developer platform.
Billing comes in three forms. Wix's billing article (Wix Billing for Site Plans, as of October 25, 2026) defines monthly, yearly and multi-year subscriptions, and a multi-year plan is charged once every two or three years. The same article says plans renew automatically unless you turn auto-renewal off. The plans page confirms that additional subscription periods are available, and that the final price appears on the purchase page before payment.
Prices have moved between the two captures. Archived copies of the plans page print Light at $17.09 a month and Core at $29.18 on April 15, 2024 (archived copy, April 15, 2024). Copies from February 4, 2026 print $17.77 for Light and $29.77 for Core (archived copy, February 4, 2026). Business rose from $36.46 to $39.77 a month over the same period, and Business Elite from $159.31 to $159.77.
The free domain is a voucher, and its terms are narrow. The plans page says the voucher "is only valid with a purchase of a new domain from Wix and cannot be used to renew or extend a domain you already own" (Wix plans, as of October 25, 2026). If the domain you want is already registered elsewhere, the voucher does not help with it.
The 14-day money-back guarantee
Wix's refund article says: "Wix offers a 14-day, money-back guarantee for new Premium or Studio site plans" (Requesting a Refund for a Premium or Studio Plan, as of October 25, 2026). The same article says the policy does not cover plan renewals or upgrades of an existing plan. It also says "Please allow up to 45 business days for your refund to process."
Cancelling ends the paid features at once. The article says that after you cancel, your site plan is immediately deactivated, so ad removal and the custom domain stop working. If your case falls outside the 14-day window, the article says you can still contact Wix and it will review the request.
Trustpilot's AI summary of recent reviews cites unexpected auto-renewal charges. On Trustpilot, one reviewer dated October 23, 2026 wrote that they cancelled a week before their next year began, and described refunds as a formal request with a decision due in 45 days (Trustpilot review, as of October 25, 2026). That is a renewal, which Wix's own refund article excludes from the 14-day policy. Turning off auto-renewal before the renewal date is the step that avoids the question.
What users report
Trustpilot lists wix.com at a TrustScore of 3.5 out of 5 across 29,282 reviews, as of October 25, 2026 (Trustpilot: wix.com). Squarespace, another builder on the same Trustpilot site, shows 3.5 on 6.3K reviews (Trustpilot: Squarespace, as of October 25, 2026). The two scores are the same, so the score alone does not separate them.
Trustpilot's own AI summary of recent Wix reviews says users describe negative interactions with payment, often citing unexpected auto-renewal charges (Trustpilot: wix.com, as of October 25, 2026). That matches the renewal rules in Wix's billing article. The same summary praises the templates and mentions glitches when editing page layouts.
Who the free plan fits, and who should pay
The free plan fits a personal page, a test build or a hobby project where Wix ads and a wixsite.com address are acceptable and the storage cap is enough. It suits someone who wants to see the editor before deciding anything.
It does not fit a small business that needs its own domain, a shop, or a client-facing brand. Those buyers are the ones for whom a paid plan stops being optional.
Light fits a portfolio or brochure site that needs a custom domain and no ads, with 2 GB of storage and two collaborators. It is the paid plan to start with for a site that does not take payments.
Core fits anyone taking payments, since it is the first card that lists Accept payments. Business fits a team of up to 10 site collaborators, and Business Elite fits a team of up to 100 with unlimited storage. No Wix plan includes a business email. Wix sells a professional email address once you have a domain in your Wix account.
If the ads and storage cap rule out the free plan, compare Wix with Wix vs Squarespace before paying. The website builders for small business guide covers the buyer case in more depth. For a shop, the ecommerce platforms compared page covers the payment side more closely than a site builder page does. Toolradar also keeps a Wix profile with its own listing data.
FAQ
Can I connect my own domain on the free plan?
No. Free sites use a wixsite.com address, and connecting your own domain requires a paid plan. Most yearly or multi-year Premium plans include a 1 year domain voucher, which applies to a new domain bought from Wix.
Does the 14-day guarantee cover a renewal?
No. Wix's refund article limits the 14-day guarantee to new Premium or Studio plans, and it excludes renewals and upgrades of an existing plan.
Can I pay month to month?
Yes. Wix's billing article lists monthly, yearly and multi-year subscriptions, and the plans page says additional subscription periods are available. The final price appears on the purchase page before payment.
Does a free Wix site get HTTPS?
Yes. Wix's help center says all Wix sites use HTTPS and SSL protocols, and the free plan is a Wix site.
