Is Grok Free in 2026? What the Free Plan Includes and Where It Stops
Short answer: yes, Grok is free to start, but SpaceXAI publishes no number for free chat limits. Its overview says Grok is free to start, and the Grok plans page lists the app on web, iOS and Android at $0 USD. The free plan has its own limits, separate from the weekly allowance that paid plans draw on. Checked October 10, 2026 against SpaceXAI's own pages.
The change that matters most began in June 2026, when SpaceXAI started moving paid users onto one shared weekly pool. The useful question is now what the free plan leaves out and when a paid plan starts to make sense. The sections below cover both, plus the two gaps the word "free" hides: the watermark and commercial use.
What "free" covers
Free access includes Chat and Voice, and both sit under the free-tier limits described below. Sign in with an Apple, X or Google account, and conversations, settings and any subscription stay in sync across the web and both apps, according to the Grok overview.
If you already pay for X Premium, you can connect your X account to your SpaceXAI account. The FAQ says this lets SpaceXAI check your X subscription status and grant the benefits that come with it. It does not list those benefits, so check X's own help pages for what your plan includes before you assume you have Grok access.
How big is the free allowance?
SpaceXAI does not publish it as a number. The FAQ says free-tier limits on Chat and Voice are separate from the weekly usage limit and reset "on their own schedule". It gives no message count and no reset time, so any figure you find elsewhere is someone else's estimate.
Older guides still quote 10 queries every two hours. They tie that figure to the late-2024 launch of Grok-2, and it does not appear in SpaceXAI's current FAQ. A number that old describes a different product, so do not plan your work around it.
The practical test is your own use. Run the work you actually do on the free plan for a week and note where it stops. The limit your account hits is the only one that matters to you, and no guide can tell you where it sits.
Did Grok stop being free?
No. Searches for "Grok no longer free" surface user threads about generations that stopped working, but SpaceXAI's current pages still say Grok is free to start. The change it describes is on the paid side. According to the FAQ, paid users began rolling out in June 2026 onto one shared weekly usage pool that they can spend across products, instead of separate daily limits for each product.
The FAQ does not say whether free limits changed in that move. It still describes free-tier limits on Chat and Voice with their own schedule, so the free plan exists. If a free account stops sooner than it did last year, you can only confirm that by using it.
What the paid plans add
SpaceXAI names two paid tiers in its help material: SuperGrok and SuperGrok Heavy. Paid plans draw from one weekly usage allowance across every product, so a heavy week of chat and a week of image generation come out of the same pool. In Settings, under Usage, you see the percentage used, a split by product (API, Build, Chat, Imagine and Voice) and the date the week resets.
When the weekly allowance runs out, paid features pause until the reset. You then have three routes: buy Extra Usage Credits, turn on Auto Top Up with a monthly cap, or move to a higher plan. Credits can be bought from $5 on the web and are used once the included allowance is spent. They expire a year after purchase unless SpaceXAI states otherwise.
SpaceXAI is direct about the trade-off. Each action costs more when paid for with credits than it does from the included allowance. Credits suit an occasional spike. If you hit the limit every week, price a higher plan on grok.com against the credits you would buy each month before you choose.
Plan prices live on the Grok plans page. This guide does not quote them, so check the live figure there before you subscribe.
The two gaps the word "free" hides
Two gaps matter once the output leaves the chat window.
The first is the watermark. Images and videos generated with Grok carry a Grok watermark. The FAQ says there is no setting to remove it, and removing or obscuring it is prohibited by SpaceXAI's Acceptable Use Policy. A mockup or an ad that carries the mark is still a Grok output, so plan the design around it. If a watermark is a deal-breaker, compare best free AI image generators and check each tool's own watermark and rights terms.
The second is commercial use. The FAQ does not say whether outputs from a free account can be used commercially. Do not assume a free app comes with free rights. Read the terms before any output goes into a client deliverable, a product or a paid campaign.
What the API costs
The API is a separate product with its own per-token billing, and the app plans do not change that. SpaceXAI's models page lists Grok 4.7 at $2.00 per million input tokens and $6.00 per million output tokens, with a 500K-token context window. The FAQ adds that xAI API credits are non-refundable. Budget API work from those rates, not from anything you see in the free app.
Free versus paid at a glance
Free versus paid, as SpaceXAI describes it (checked October 10, 2026):
| Question | Free account | Paid plan (SuperGrok or SuperGrok Heavy) |
|---|---|---|
| Price to start | $0 on the Grok plans page | Prices on the Grok plans page |
| Chat and Voice limits | Free-tier limits, no number published, reset on their own schedule | One weekly pool shared across products, reset weekly |
| Usage tracking | Not described in the FAQ | Settings > Usage shows percent used and the split by product |
| Extra usage | Not described in the FAQ | Extra Usage Credits from $5 on the web, expire a year after purchase unless SpaceXAI says otherwise |
| Watermark on images and video | Yes, no removal setting | Yes, no removal setting |
| Commercial use of outputs | Not addressed in the FAQ | Not addressed in the FAQ |
Who should stay free, and who should pay
Stay on the free plan if you want to see what Grok does with your own work. Free access covers chat and voice, so you can judge the answers before you pay anything.
Move to a paid plan if the free limit interrupts work you do in the same week, or if you use several Grok products and want one allowance for all of them. The weekly pool is built for that case. Before you subscribe, compare the plan price on grok.com with the weekly usage you expect, not with a figure quoted in an article.

Methodology
We checked this page on October 10, 2026, against SpaceXAI's own pages: the free-offer data on the Grok plans page, the Grok overview and FAQ on docs.x.ai, and the model prices on docs.x.ai's models page. Third-party guides were read to find the questions readers ask and the figures they repeat. We quote no current plan figure that SpaceXAI does not publish. Older guide figures appear only as labeled history.
FAQ
Is Grok free in 2026?
Yes. SpaceXAI's overview says Grok is free to start on grok.com and in its iOS and Android apps, and the Grok plans page lists the app at $0 USD. The free plan has limits that SpaceXAI does not publish as a number.
How many messages can you send to Grok for free?
SpaceXAI publishes no message count. Its FAQ says free-tier limits on Chat and Voice are separate from the weekly usage limit and reset on their own schedule. Guides that quote 10 queries every two hours describe an older rollout.
Did Grok stop being free after June 2026?
No. The June 2026 change began moving paid users onto one weekly usage pool across products. SpaceXAI's FAQ still describes free-tier limits on Chat and Voice, so the free plan is still there.
Can you use free Grok images commercially?
The FAQ does not say. Generated images and videos carry a Grok watermark with no removal setting, and removing it is prohibited under SpaceXAI's Acceptable Use Policy. Read the terms before any client, ad or product use.
Is the Grok API free?
The language models are billed per token. SpaceXAI's models page lists Grok 4.7 at $2.00 per million input tokens and $6.00 per million output tokens. API credits are non-refundable.
Does X Premium include Grok?
The FAQ says you can connect an X account so SpaceXAI can check your X subscription and grant related benefits. It does not list those benefits, so check X's help pages for the plan you hold.
