Trusted by780,000+ Techpresso subscribers·Editorial policy·How we make money

On $10,000 a month from 200 card sales of $50, with 60% of buyers outside the US, Creem is the cheapest of the seven merchants of record that print a rate: $565.30 a month on 20 Oct 2026, payout fee included. Dodo Payments follows at $570.00 and Polar's Pro plan at $595.83.

Dupple data: of the 9 vendors whose pricing we read on 20 Oct 2026, 7 publish a rate. Priced as merchants of record on the same month, those 7 sit $534.70 apart from cheapest to dearest, and 4 of the 7 add a surcharge for international cards or PayPal.

Totals use each vendor's printed rates, checked on 20 Oct 2026, for 200 one-time card sales of $50 (80 from US cards, 120 from non-US cards) and one payout a month to a US bank account. Rows run from the lowest to the highest total among the seven priced merchants of record, followed by the two vendors with no printed rate and the Stripe reference, which is not comparable on tax handling.

What is a merchant of record?

A merchant of record is the company that legally sells your product to the buyer, so it collects and remits VAT and sales tax, handles payments and disputes, and pays you the balance after its fee. A processor such as Stripe leaves that role with you.

How we priced the month

Prices come from each vendor's pricing page, help center or docs, linked in the cards. Every row uses one basket: 200 one-time card sales, no refunds, disputes, PayPal or subscriptions, and a dollar payout once a month computed on the balance left after platform fees. Each vendor's own wording decides what counts as outside the US.

Creem, Lemon Squeezy and Polar say their fee applies to the total order value including tax, and Stripe says the same of its 3.5% fee, so a seller who adds VAT on top of the sale price pays slightly more at those. Startup programs, such as Polar's free Scale plan for 12 months, stay out of the ranking. This is a price comparison, not tax or legal advice, and country coverage is each vendor's own claim.

Where the order flips

Headline rates put Creem and Dodo ahead of Paddle and Lemon Squeezy, but three details move the invoice. The first is the non-US share: Creem beats Dodo only when at least 114 of the 200 sales are outside the US, because Dodo adds its international surcharge to each of those while Creem takes 1% of the payout on everything. With US buyers alone the order becomes Dodo at $480.00, Polar's Pro plan at $506.05 and Creem third.

The second is volume: at the same order value Polar's Pro plan beats Starter from the 29th sale a month, Growth beats Pro from the 534th and Scale beats Growth from the 2,001st, before payout fees. The third is order size: on a $5 sale the per-sale fee is $0.59 at Polar Pro, $0.595 at Creem, $0.60 at Dodo and $0.62 at Stripe Managed Payments, before international surcharges, while Paddle and Lemon Squeezy price low-ticket products by quote.

1

Creem: lowest merchant-of-record total, payout fee included

Creem's pricing page prints 3.9% + 40¢ per successful transaction, no monthly or setup fee and no international card fees. That is $2.35 a sale and $470.00 on 200, and the payouts docs add $7 or 1% of the payout, whichever is higher: $95.30 on a $9,530.00 payout. Payouts run on the 1st and 15th.

The catch: the pricing page promises "No hidden fees, ever" yet lists no payout fee, its FAQ names cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay with local methods still coming, and splits and affiliates cost 2% each extra.

Verdict

Pick it when at least 114 of every 200 sales come from outside the US; below that, Dodo undercuts it.

2

Dodo Payments: cheapest merchant of record for mostly American buyers

Dodo Payments' pricing page prints 4% + 40¢ for US cards and wallets and adds 1.5% outside the US. That is $2.40 on each of 80 US sales ($192.00) and $3.15 on each of 120 non-US sales ($378.00). Regular payouts are free, with a $5 fee under $1,000 and $25 for USD SWIFT wires to non-US businesses.

The catch: PayPal adds 3%, subscriptions 0.5%, each refund costs $1 and each dispute $30.

Verdict

Pick it when most buyers are in the US: with every buyer American it is the cheapest priced merchant of record, at $480.00.

3

Polar: the Pro plan beats Starter from the 29th sale

Polar's pricing page lists Starter at 5% + 50¢, Pro at $20 a month with 3.8% + 40¢, Growth at $100 with 3.6% + 35¢ and Scale at $400 with 3.4% + 30¢, plus 1.5% on cards outside the US. Pro is the cheapest tier here (Growth would be $645.70, Starter $715.53): $20 plus $2.30 on each of 200 sales is $480.00, the surcharge adds $90.00, and Stripe's payout fees on a $9,430.00 balance add $25.83.

The catch: payout fees are Stripe's pass-through ($2 a month, 0.25% + 25¢ a payout), and the older 4% + 40¢ Early Member rate covers only organizations created before 27 May 2026.

Verdict

Pick it for published volume tiers instead of a quote; Growth takes over from Pro at 534 sales a month.

4

Paddle: one flat rate with no international surcharge

Paddle's pricing page prints 5% + 50¢ per Checkout transaction with no monthly fee, and says extra payment methods and migration cost nothing more. That is $3.00 a sale and $600.00 on 200, with no international or PayPal surcharge on the page. Its payout help article says dollar ACH payouts to US banks carry no fee, cross-currency SWIFT wires cost $15, and a payout currency different from your balance currency can add a margin of up to 1.5%.

The catch: products under $10 get bespoke pricing, and high-volume sellers go to custom pricing rather than a published ladder.

Verdict

Pick it for one predictable rate across currencies and PayPal; it costs less than Lemon Squeezy's matching headline once surcharges land.

5

Lemon Squeezy: Paddle's headline rate, dearer once surcharges land

Lemon Squeezy's pricing page prints 5% + 50¢ per transaction with no monthly fee. Its fees docs list 1.5% outside the US, 1.5% for PayPal and 0.5% for subscriptions, on the total order value. The base is $600.00, the non-US surcharge adds $90.00, and payouts through Stripe to a US bank are free.

The catch: its CEO's January 2026 post says support replies slowed and product updates became less frequent while the team builds Stripe Managed Payments.

Verdict

Pick it when buyers are mostly American, where it ties Paddle, and read its roadmap first.

6

Stripe Managed Payments: Stripe's card rate plus a 3.5% merchant-of-record fee

Stripe's pricing page lists 2.9% + 30¢ for domestic cards and 1.5% more for international cards, then adds 3.5% per successful Managed Payments transaction, which Stripe's pricing article says is calculated on the full amount including tax. That is $3.50 on each of 80 US sales ($280.00) and $4.25 on each of 120 non-US sales ($510.00). Payouts on the standard schedule are free.

The catch: subscriptions add Stripe Billing's 0.7% of Billing volume, Stripe's docs exclude Connect and embeddable web components, and Lemon Squeezy's January 2026 post described early access by waitlist for merchants in 35+ countries.

Verdict

Pick it when you already sell through Stripe Checkout and want the tax work moved; it costs $190.00 more than Paddle here.

7

Gumroad: the dearest row on either reading

Gumroad's pricing page prints 10% + 50¢ per transaction on direct sales and 30% on sales found through Discover, with no monthly fee, and says Gumroad has been the merchant of record for tax since 1 January 2025. At $5.50 a sale that is $1,100.00 on 200 sales. Its fees article says card processing of 2.9% + 30¢ and PayPal fees are not included, which would make the month $1,450.00; the pricing page is silent on this, and the row stays last either way.

The catch: the same article cuts direct sales to 5% + 50¢ once a calendar month's paid sales reach $20,000, and its payouts article puts a 2% fee on PayPal payouts.

Verdict

Pick it for Discover's marketplace, where the 30% fee applies, not for price.

8

FastSpring: does not print a flat rate

FastSpring's pricing page carries the line "One flat rate. No hidden fees." but prints no rate: a quote form asks for monthly volume, transactions and regional split, then a business email, and the page says pricing is typically based on volume, so there is no total for it here.

The catch: a quote leaves nothing to check against the published rows, and the page compares itself with Stripe, not with other merchants of record.

Verdict

Request a quote if you sell B2B at volume, since the page lists interactive quotes and discounted ACH and wire rates, and hold it against Paddle's published rate.

9

PayPro Global: does not publish a price

PayPro Global's pricing page says "You won't see a price tag" and offers a quote, and its FAQ says prices are set per business. The FAQ does print payout fees: $3 for ACH in North America, $21 for a wire, $2 for Payoneer, and PayPal free in the US and Canada or 2% (maximum $20) elsewhere. Payouts run on the 15th of each month on the previous month's closing balance.

The catch: there is nothing to rank, so it stays out of the totals.

Verdict

Request a quote if a fixed monthly payout date and a contract suit you, and compare it with the published rows.

10

Stripe processing only: the reference line, not a merchant of record

Stripe's pricing page lists 2.9% + 30¢ for domestic cards and 1.5% more for international cards. That is $1.75 on a US sale and $2.50 on a non-US sale, $140.00 for 80 and $300.00 for 120, with standard payouts free. Stripe's docs name "your business" as the merchant of record for its other products, so you calculate, collect and file the tax yourself. Adding Managed Payments puts 3.5% on top, which is $350.00 on this basket.

The catch: the row is not comparable on tax handling, and Stripe Tax is a separate product left out of the figure.

Verdict

Use it as the yardstick: the gap to the lowest merchant-of-record total is $125.30 a month, and our payment gateways ranking covers Stripe, Adyen and PayPal beside Paddle and Lemon Squeezy.

How to choose

  • Mostly non-US buyers: Creem, then Dodo, with the payout fee priced in.
  • US buyers alone: Dodo or Polar's Pro plan, which beat Paddle and Lemon Squeezy by $93.95 or more.
  • Recurring plans: price the 0.5% subscription surcharge and the billing layer, which our subscription management software guide compares.
  • A paid community or courses: our membership software guide covers platforms whose transaction fees sit on top of a processor.

Common mistakes

  • Ranking by the headline. Creem's 3.9% + 40¢ looks like a $470.00 month, but the payout fee adds $95.30.
  • Treating two platforms with the same headline rate as equal. Lemon Squeezy's non-US surcharge costs $90.00 here, and PayPal adds more.
  • Skipping the tax line. Stripe's $440.00 excludes the tax work, and Managed Payments adds $350.00 to it.
  • Reading one Gumroad page. The pricing page alone gives $1,100.00, and the help article's card processing makes it $1,450.00.
  • Using a merchant of record for physical goods. Stripe's docs describe Managed Payments for digital products such as SaaS, software and digital content; for a store, our ecommerce platforms ranking compares the options.

FAQ

What is the cheapest merchant of record in 2026?

How much does a merchant of record cost on $10,000 a month?

The seven that print a rate span $534.70 on the same month, from Creem at the low end to Gumroad at $1,100.00, before refunds, disputes, PayPal and subscriptions. Paddle's flat rate is $600.00 and Lemon Squeezy's reaches $690.00 once its non-US surcharge applies.

Is Paddle cheaper than Lemon Squeezy?

In this basket, yes, by $90.00: both print 5% + 50¢, but Lemon Squeezy adds a surcharge outside the US and Paddle prints none. With US buyers alone the two tie.

Is Stripe cheaper than a merchant of record?

Stripe's processing alone is $440.00 in this basket, but you remain the seller and handle tax yourself; its merchant-of-record product, Managed Payments, adds 3.5% for $790.00.

Who handles VAT and sales tax on a digital product?

The merchant of record. Creem, Dodo, Polar, Paddle, Lemon Squeezy, Gumroad, Stripe Managed Payments, FastSpring and PayPro Global each say they act as merchant of record and handle indirect tax; with Stripe's standard processing the seller does. Country coverage is the vendor's own claim.

Bottom line

Creem is the lowest merchant-of-record total on this basket, but only while at least 114 of every 200 sales come from outside the US, so price your own US and non-US mix, payouts and subscriptions first. Dodo suits American audiences, Polar's tiers suit growing volume, and Paddle suits one flat rate with PayPal.
