Short answer: Printify's Mockup Generator is the best free pick for ecommerce sellers, with unlimited free downloads and no watermark on its free mockups. Its AI scenes need Premium, from $24.99 a month billed yearly. Product designers making app screens should check Visily, free for two boards, but its free exports carry a watermark.

Free plan and paid entry prices as read on October 10, 2026, in US dollars unless noted.

Ahrefs estimates 1,300 US searches a month for "free mockup generator," and most of that demand is for one job: putting a design on a photo of a shirt, mug, phone or laptop without paying for a design suite. The trap is the free tier. A free mockup tool can stamp a watermark on every export, limit free downloads to JPG, or restrict free exports to personal use.

Dupple data: On October 10, 2026, we read the free-plan terms of nine mockup tools on their own pages. Only two state outright that free downloads have no watermark (Printify and Mockey AI). Two put a watermark on free exports (Screenhance and Visily), one is mixed (Dynamic Mockups is clean in its web app but watermarks its API renders), and four say nothing about watermarks at all.

What is a mockup generator?

A mockup generator places your design onto a photo of a product, screen or room, so the result looks like the finished item. It does not invent a new picture from a text prompt, which is what an AI image generator does.

How we chose and checked

We read each tool's own pricing page or homepage on October 10, 2026, and recorded the free plan's limits and the paid prices in US dollars. We did not test the tools or export a mockup, so every claim here comes from vendor text. Search results only helped us find candidates. We kept tools with a free plan or free generator, then ranked them by fit: print-on-demand sellers and product designers first.

Smartmockups' own domain now redirects to Canva's mockup page, so it has no standalone plan to compare. Canva is left out until its own pricing page states the free-plan limits. Toolradar has profiles for six of the nine tools below, and we link them where they exist.

1

Printify Mockup Generator, the free pick for print-on-demand sellers

Printify's generator is free. Its page says mockups have no download cap and are watermark-free, and it describes the images as "ready to use in your marketing materials, social media posts, website, and product listings." It does not spell out a formal license, so read the terms before you run paid ads with them.

The catch is AI. AI-generated custom scenes need Premium, which starts at $39 a month on monthly billing or $24.99 a month billed yearly. If you sell printed goods through Printify, start on the free generator and move up only when you need those scenes. Then compare the yearly price with how many custom scenes you would actually make in a year.

2

Printful Mockup Generator, free for products in a Printful store

Printful says "All mockups for Printful products are totally free," and it lists unlimited high-resolution downloads. Its page says the images work on your website, social channels, apps, ads and email campaigns, which is the clearest list of allowed uses in this group. The page does not mention watermarks, so check one export before you publish.

The limit is scope. You get mockups for products in Printful's own catalog, so this is the right tool for a Printful store, not for a general designer working on other products.

3

Mockey AI, watermark-free downloads but JPG only

Mockey AI's homepage says you can download mockups with no watermark, and it names no monthly cap on free designs. Free downloads come as JPG only, and PNG needs a paid plan. For a product shot on a website, JPG is usually enough. For a print file or a layered design, it is not.

The homepage also ties "premium features for commercial use" to a subscription. Free output is therefore a weak fit for paid ads or client work until you check the terms. The homepage names no paid price, so look up the price before you commit.

4

Dynamic Mockups, clean web exports and watermarked API renders

Dynamic Mockups gives new accounts 50 credits to start. Its page says every mockup exported from the web app on the Free plan is clean. The catch is the API: renders created through it carry a watermark on Free, so an automated pipeline on the free plan will ship watermarked images.

Paid plans run on credits. Pro includes 3,600 credits a year billed annually, and top-ups cost $0.051 per credit. Its AI generator, MockAnything AI, adds 3 free uses a day once your credits run out. This is the right pick if you need many mockups from one design, or a script that makes them, as long as the script runs on a paid plan.

5

Artboard Studio, for buyers who want a one-time purchase

Artboard Studio's homepage says you can start for free, but it does not state the free plan's export limits or watermark rules. Paid plans are Lite at $9 a month billed annually, Pro at $19 a month billed annually with unlimited image and video exports, and a Lifetime Mockup plan at $129 paid once.

Lite comes to $108 a year. The Lifetime plan costs more up front but has no renewal, so it beats Lite once you would keep Lite for longer than about 14 months, provided the Lifetime plan covers the products you need.

6

Placeit, a large apparel and print library on a subscription

Placeit's pricing page shows its unlimited subscription from $7.47 a month on monthly billing, or $8.33 a month shown for annual billing. Its footnote says that a subscriber who has downloaded any template faces a one-month minimum commitment. The free account's download limits and watermark rules are not stated on the pricing page, so check them inside the product before you build a workflow on them.

Placeit fits apparel and print mockups in volume. The one-month minimum is the catch for anyone who only needs a single batch.

7

Visily, for product designers who need UI mockups

Visily is built for app and web screens, not product photos. Its free Starter plan gives two editable boards. Its exports are 1x, in JPG, PNG or PDF, and they carry a watermark. Figma and code export are not on the free plan. AI screen generation gets 300 credits per workspace a month, with 600 in the first month.

Paid plans are per editor: Pro is $14 per editor a month, and Business is $29 per editor a month billed annually. Test a flow on the free boards, but do not hand a watermarked export to a developer. If you are weighing Visily against a full design tool, see Figma alternatives. If you design screens for a living, the Pro seat is the first real cost to plan for.

8

Screenhance, for app store and marketing screenshots

Screenhance's free plan gives 3 exports a month, and its pricing page lists watermarked outputs on it. A Launch Pass costs $6 once, the lowest one-time price in this list, but read what it covers before you buy. Pro is $12 a month or $99 a year. Teams is $24 a month or $199 a year, plus $8 a month for each extra editor.

Three free exports a month is enough to try the tool, not to run a launch. For one-off screenshots, the Launch Pass is the cheapest step. For ongoing use, the $99 yearly Pro is the first real cost.

9

Mockuuups Studio, for personal projects

Mockuuups Studio gives new accounts 5 free exports from its full library, with no card needed. Its FAQ says free and trial exports are for personal use only. Its paid plans are priced in euros, and the page publishes no USD price, so we have not compared its cost with the others.

It works for a portfolio piece or a personal mockup. It does not work for a client job or a product listing, because the free exports cannot be used commercially.

Pricing: what you will really pay

On the paid side, the lowest recurring price in this list is Placeit at $7.47 a month on monthly billing. Artboard Studio's Lite is $9 a month billed annually, and Visily Pro is $14 per editor a month. Printify's Premium tier, which holds the AI scenes, has the highest monthly price on this list at $39. A one-time $6 Launch Pass or a $129 lifetime plan avoids a renewal, but neither is a bargain until you know what it covers.

Pricing sources: Printify pricing, Printify mockup generator, Printful mockup generator, Mockey AI, Dynamic Mockups pricing, Artboard Studio, Placeit pricing, Visily pricing, Screenhance pricing, Mockuuups Studio pricing. All checked October 10, 2026.

What free plans leave out

Three limits matter more than the headline price. The first is the watermark rule: four of the nine tools say nothing about it, so you find out only after you export. The second is commercial use. Mockuuups marks free exports as personal use only, Mockey ties commercial use to a subscription, and Printful lists ads and email among the uses it allows. Printify lists marketing materials and product listings, but states no formal license.

The third is file format. Mockey's free downloads are JPG only, and Visily's free exports are 1x, which is standard resolution. A product page that needs a sharp file or a transparent PNG will push you to a paid plan sooner than the price suggests. If the free export is too soft, an AI image upscaler is a separate step, and a clean cutout comes from an AI background remover.

How to choose by use case

Print-on-demand shop. Start with Printify. If your products already sit in a Printful store, Printful's free generator is the simpler path. Both generators are free for their own catalogs. If the shop still needs a logo, see best AI logo generators.

Product designer. Use Visily for screens. The free boards and watermarked exports work for review, so budget for the Pro seat before handover. For the step after review, see design handoff tools.

App store screenshots. Screenhance's 3 exports a month cover a test run. The $6 Launch Pass covers a launch if its coverage fits.

Many mockups from one design. Dynamic Mockups' web exports are clean on the free plan, but any automated render needs a paid plan.

No subscription. Artboard Studio's Lifetime plan, if it covers your products.

Common mistakes

  1. Publishing a watermarked draft. Screenhance's free plan allows 3 exports a month, and each one carries a watermark. A launch run on the free plan ships marked images.
  2. Assuming free means commercial. Mockuuups marks free exports as personal use only, which rules out a client job on the free plan.
  3. Automating on the free plan. Dynamic Mockups' API renders carry a watermark on Free, so a pipeline built on the free tier ships marked images.
  4. Expecting sharp files for free. Mockey's free downloads are JPG only, and Visily's free exports are 1x, which matters for product pages that need sharp images.
  5. Upgrading for AI scenes too early. Printify's AI scenes need Premium, so test the free generator on your own products first.
  6. Buying Visily Pro without checking exports. Figma export is not on the free plan, and Pro costs $14 per editor a month, so confirm the export format you need before you pay.

FAQ

What is the best free mockup generator in 2026?

Printify's Mockup Generator for print-on-demand sellers. Its free generator allows unlimited downloads and states that its outputs are watermark-free. If you already sell through Printful, Printful's free generator covers the products in your store.

Is there a free mockup generator without a watermark?

Yes, with conditions. Printify states watermark-free outputs, and Mockey AI says free downloads carry no watermark, but they come as JPG only. Dynamic Mockups' web exports are clean on the free plan, while its API renders are watermarked.

Can I use free mockups in paid ads?

Check each license first. Printful's generator page lists ads and email campaigns among the uses it allows. Printify lists marketing materials and product listings but states no formal license. Mockuuups marks free exports as personal use only, and Mockey ties commercial use to a subscription. For ad creatives rather than product mockups, see free AI ad generators.

How much does Printify Premium cost?

Printify's pricing page shows Premium from $39 a month on monthly billing, or from $24.99 a month billed yearly. AI-generated custom scenes in its mockup generator need Premium.

Is there a free AI mockup tool for UI screens?

Visily's Starter plan is free and includes two editable boards and 300 AI screen credits a month. Its exports carry a watermark and are 1x, so they suit reviews more than final handover.

What is the difference between a mockup generator and an AI image generator?

A mockup generator places your design onto a product photo or device frame. An AI image generator creates a new picture from a text prompt. If you need a new image rather than a product mockup, see the free AI image generators guide.

Bottom line

For most sellers, the answer is Printify for print products, and Visily for UI work. Check the watermark rule before you export anything, and the commercial-use rule before you run an ad. Screenhance's free tier suits a single round of app screenshots, but three exports a month run out fast. Mockuuups is for personal projects. Prices here are USD as read on October 10, 2026, so check each pricing page before you pay. For a wider free list, see Best Free AI Tools.
