Is Dropbox Free in 2026? Storage, Limits and What It Costs
Short answer: yes. Dropbox Basic costs $0 and includes 2 GB of storage, with sign-in on up to three devices at a time. For someone with several phones and computers, the device cap can matter more than the storage. On Dropbox's web plans page the first paid step is Plus, at $9.99 a month billed yearly for 2 TB, and it only makes sense once you need that room. Dropbox also sells a mobile-only Simple plan with 500 GB through Google Play and the Apple App Store in select countries.
Toolradar data: Toolradar's cloud storage ranking, updated October 23, 2026, evaluates 35 tools, and 6 of its 10 picks have a free plan. Across all 35 tracked tools, 69% are free, freemium or open source, as of October 24, 2026. The count tells you free tiers are common. The limit that matters is where each one stops. What the free plan includes
Basic is Dropbox's free tier, with 2 GB of storage. The device rule is the part most people miss. Dropbox's help article says that "Dropbox Basic users can be logged into up to three devices at a time." Phones count as well as computers, and signing in on dropbox.com alone does not use one of the three slots. Dropbox help: the device limit, last updated November 14, 2025. Plus is the next step up, and it connects unlimited devices, so the device cap ends there.
What happens when a free account is full
Going over 2 GB can also stop syncing and sharing, not only new uploads, for some Basic accounts. Dropbox's help article on storage over the Basic limit, updated July 29, 2026, says an over-limit account may not be able to "sync, upload, share, move, or preview files and folders." If the account stays over the limit, Dropbox "may delete files you own to bring your account below the storage limit," and "Only files you own will be deleted." You get warning first, in "email notifications with information about your options." Deleted files stay recoverable for 30 days after deletion, and you need enough free storage to restore them. Dropbox help: exceeding storage on Basic
The practical rule: stay under 2 GB, act on the warning emails, and move files out before the 30-day recovery window closes.
Plus, Standard and Advanced side by side
Prices below are US dollars, as of October 2026, and each paid price is the yearly-billing rate. Dropbox plans

Plus is the tier a single person needs. At $9.99 a month billed yearly it costs $119.88 a year. It keeps 30 days of version history and sends transfers of up to 50 GB. It leaves out password-protected links and the admin console, which start on Standard. Standard and Advanced add 180 days and one year of version history, and transfers of up to 100 GB.
For a team, the per-user prices add up quickly. Three people on Standard come to $540 a year and three on Advanced to $864 a year at the yearly rates.

Between the June 2021 and June 2024 captures, the page moved from Dropbox Professional to Plus, Essentials, Business and Business Plus. A capture of dropbox.com/plans from June 4, 2021 in the Internet Archive described Dropbox Professional as costing "from $19.99 per month." A capture from June 2, 2024 listed Plus, Essentials, Business and Business Plus with euro prices. The current page lists Plus, Standard and Advanced in US dollars. One paid-tier change is worth knowing. AlternativeTo reported on August 26, 2023 that Dropbox ended the Advanced plan's "as much space as needed" offer. In that change, three active licenses were capped at 15 TB, with 5 TB added for each extra license, and the headline gives the reason as crypto users abusing the offer. Dropbox's plans page now lists Advanced from 15,000 GB for a team. AlternativeTo
What Google and Microsoft charge
Every Google account includes up to 15 GB, and Google describes its paid storage as a total across Google Photos, Drive and Gmail. Google One Basic gives 100 GB at $1.99 a month and Google AI Plus gives 2 TB at $9.99 a month on Google's monthly view. The page also has an annual toggle marked "Save up to 16%". Google One plans
Microsoft 365 Basic gives 100 GB for $1.99 a month or $19.99 a year. Microsoft 365 Personal gives 1 TB with the Office apps for $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year. Family gives 2 TB to up to six people at $12.99 a month or $129.99 a year, and Premium gives up to 6 TB at $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year. Microsoft OneDrive plans
On a yearly basis, Dropbox Plus costs $19.89 more than Microsoft 365 Personal ($119.88 against $99.99). The Dropbox plan buys 2 TB without Office, and the Microsoft plan buys 1 TB with it. Google sells its 2 TB plan on a monthly or annual toggle, so compare the annual price with Dropbox on the same basis before you decide. Who should pay and who should skip
Pay for Plus if you are one person, you need more than 2 GB, and you do not already pay for Office. It is Dropbox's personal plan with 2 TB and unlimited devices.
Stay on Basic if your files fit in 2 GB and you use no more than three devices. Expect warning emails before any deletion, and clear space yourself while you still choose which files go. If you need a free tier with more room, best free cloud storage covers the alternatives. Google's free 15 GB is larger on paper, but Gmail and Photos share it, so it is not extra room for files alone.
Skip the free plan if you need a fourth device. Basic has no fourth slot, so that means paying.
Skip Plus if you already pay for Microsoft 365, because its 1 TB comes with the Office apps.
Skip Standard and Advanced unless you are a team. Both are priced per user, with minimums of one and three people.
If you want a backup rather than a sync folder, best backup software compares tools built for that job. A 2 GB sync folder holds a small backup at best.
FAQ
Is Dropbox free in 2026?
Yes. Basic costs $0 and includes 2 GB and sign-in on up to three devices at a time. Going over 2 GB can stop syncing, uploads and sharing, and files can be deleted if the account stays over the limit. Dropbox says this applies to some Basic accounts.
How much does Dropbox Plus cost?
Plus is $119.88 a year on yearly billing for 2 TB, one person and unlimited devices.
Can I connect more than three devices to a free Dropbox?
No. Basic allows three devices at a time, and phones count alongside computers. Signing in on dropbox.com alone does not use a slot.
What is the cheapest paid Dropbox plan?
Plus is the lowest paid price on the page, and it is for one person. Standard and Advanced are priced per user, so their totals grow with the size of the team.

Is Dropbox cheaper than Google One or Microsoft 365?
It depends on the size. Google AI Plus gives 2 TB, with a monthly and an annual option on Google's plans page. Microsoft 365 Personal costs $99.99 a year for 1 TB with the Office apps, while Dropbox Plus costs $119.88 a year for 2 TB without them.
