What Is Sendcloud?

Sendcloud is the European shipping platform for e-commerce sellers that aggregates carrier rates, automates label printing, and handles branded tracking and returns. Founded in 2012 in the Netherlands, Sendcloud serves over 25,000 European online retailers with focus on multi-carrier shipping across the EU and UK.

The pitch is consolidation for European e-commerce. Shipping in Europe is fragmented across dozens of carriers (DHL, DPD, UPS, FedEx, GLS, Bpost, PostNL, Colissimo, and many country-specific options). Sendcloud lets stores connect once to access 80+ carriers, compare rates per shipment, and route orders to the optimal carrier based on destination and weight.

Beyond pure shipping, Sendcloud handles the customer experience layer: branded tracking pages, return portals, automated customer notifications, and analytics on shipping performance. The platform competes with Shippo in the US space but is far stronger in European logistics.

How Sendcloud Works

Connect your store. Native integrations cover Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Lightspeed, Magento, PrestaShop, and the major European e-commerce platforms. Orders flow into Sendcloud's dashboard automatically.

For each order, Sendcloud surfaces carrier options with rates and delivery time estimates. Set automation rules (over 5kg use DPD, under 2kg use PostNL, international goes to DHL) so orders process without manual selection. Print labels in bulk, attach to packages, and hand off to carriers.

Customers receive branded tracking pages with your logo, color scheme, and upsell links. Notifications (shipped, in transit, delivered, delayed) automatically email to customers in their language. This experience layer reduces support tickets and increases repeat purchase rates.

Returns work through a branded portal. Customers initiate returns, print labels, and ship back. The portal can prompt for return reasons, suggest store credits over refunds, or offer exchanges to reduce refund volume.

Analytics show shipping costs per carrier, delivery times, return rates, and customer experience scores. Use the data to negotiate better carrier rates or optimize automation rules.

Sendcloud Pricing in 2026

Free: Up to 5 shipments/month. Trial for very small stores.

Lite: €25/month annually. 250 shipments, basic features.

Growth: €89/month annually. 1,000 shipments, advanced features, branded tracking.

Premium: €299/month annually. 5,000 shipments, multiple users, advanced analytics.

Enterprise: Custom pricing for high-volume sellers.

Carrier rates are separate from Sendcloud's subscription. Sendcloud's volume negotiates discounted rates for small sellers who could not access them directly, often saving 10-30% versus retail carrier pricing.

Where Sendcloud Wins

  • European carrier coverage: 80+ carriers, the deepest network in the EU.
  • Negotiated rates: small sellers access discounted rates through Sendcloud's volume.
  • Branded customer experience: tracking pages and notifications maintain your brand instead of carrier branding.
  • Returns portal: reduces refund volume by offering exchanges and store credit options.
  • EU-specific features: customs documentation, VAT handling, EORI numbers for international shipments.

Where It Falls Short

  • US presence is limited: not the right choice for US-only sellers.
  • Subscription overhead: low-volume sellers may find per-shipment pricing on alternatives cheaper.
  • Setup complexity: automation rules and branding take time to configure properly.
  • Customer service variations: response times vary by tier and language.

Shippo dominates US e-commerce shipping with broader US carrier coverage. Pick Shippo for US-only operations.

ShipStation is the closest US competitor with similar scope. Better in North America.

nShift targets enterprise European e-commerce with deeper customizations and dedicated support.

Who Should Use Sendcloud

European e-commerce stores shipping 50+ orders/month: the subscription pays back through carrier rate savings.

Multi-country European sellers: handling DE, FR, NL, IT, ES shipments requires multi-carrier flexibility.

Brands prioritizing customer experience: branded tracking and returns reduce support load.

Skip it if: you ship under 20 orders/month (carrier-direct may be cheaper), operate primarily in the US (use Shippo or ShipStation), or have very simple shipping needs.

How Sendcloud works

Sendcloud sits between an e-commerce store and its carriers as a shipping automation layer. It pulls orders in from your shop or marketplace, lets you print labels in bulk or one at a time, picks or suggests a carrier, sends branded tracking notifications, and runs returns through a branded portal. It also handles pick and pack, carrier performance analytics, and AI-assisted claim handling when you are chasing carrier refunds. The company claims users save an average of 7 minutes per parcel and cites 170+ carriers, 9,500+ shipping methods, and 390K+ service points.

You connect your store (50+ e-commerce platforms and 10+ marketplaces are supported) or push orders in by CSV or API. Then you write shipping rules that map order conditions to specific carrier services, which is where the automation actually pays off. On rates you have two options: ship on Sendcloud's pre-negotiated contracts (DHL from €3.84, DPD from €3.38, GLS from €3.74, FedEx from €6.33, UPS from €9.00) or plug in your own negotiated carrier contracts. Note that own-contract support is gated above the Free plan.

Beyond the storefront it reaches into operations: 15+ WMS platforms (ShipHero, Picqer, Peoplevox, Ongoing), 20+ ERPs (Odoo, NetSuite, SAP Business One, Dynamics 365 Business Central, Brightpearl, Linnworks), and support or returns tools including Zendesk, Gorgias, Klaviyo, Loop Returns, and ReturnGO.

Where Sendcloud wins

  • A genuinely deep integration catalogue: 50+ storefronts, 10+ marketplaces including TikTok Shop and Bol, plus 15+ WMS and 20+ ERP systems named individually rather than hidden behind a vague marketplace.
  • Transparent published pricing across five tiers, with per-label fees that fall as volume rises (€0.10 down to €0.07).
  • A real free tier (20 parcels per month at €0.10 per label) plus a 14-day trial, so a small store can start at zero.
  • Pre-negotiated carrier rates give small merchants contract pricing they could never negotiate alone, while larger merchants can still bring their own contracts.
  • It covers the whole post-purchase surface, not just labels: branded tracking, multi-language notifications, WhatsApp updates, a returns portal, and carrier performance analytics.

Where it falls short

  • Europe-only origin. Full support covers shipping from just 8 countries (Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, UK), which puts US, Canadian, and APAC merchants effectively out of scope.
  • The Free plan strips out most of what makes the product useful: no own carrier contracts, no API access, no branded portals, no advanced tracking, no phone support.
  • Integrations are rationed by tier: 3 on Lite, 5 users on Growth, unlimited only from Premium at €175/mo upward. Multi-channel sellers get pushed up-market fast.
  • Sendcloud states it "now limits support for third-party plugins, as these can cause issues like failed shipping labels, missing service points, or sync errors". If your platform connection depends on a community plugin, support may not back you.
  • Overages are punitive: exceeding your monthly label allowance costs an extra €0.15 per label on top of the normal fee.
  • The price ladder is steep (€28 to €87 to €175 to €639/mo), and complex integrations can trigger extra setup charges even though standard plans carry none.

Who should use Sendcloud

Sendcloud is a good fit for European D2C and marketplace sellers shipping from one of the 8 supported countries, at enough volume that label printing has become a daily chore. If you want multi-carrier choice plus branded tracking and returns without negotiating carrier contracts yourself, the pre-negotiated rates alone can justify the subscription. The ERP and WMS coverage also makes it credible for merchants who have outgrown a plugin and run real warehouse software.

Skip it if you ship from outside Europe, because origin coverage is the hard limit here and no amount of feature depth fixes it. Skip it if you sell across many channels but intend to stay on a cheap tier: the integration caps on Lite and Growth will force an upgrade to Premium sooner than your parcel volume would suggest. And check your platform connection before committing, since a store running on a third-party plugin may fall outside supported territory.
