What is CleverTap?

Customer engagement platform for personalized retention and lifecycle marketing

CleverTap puts your campaigns in one place instead of scattered across a dozen tabs. It's built for teams that ship campaigns weekly, not once a quarter.

How We Evaluated CleverTap

We scored CleverTap on five things: campaign management, audience targeting, analytics integration, automation capabilities, and reporting clarity. Same rubric we use for every marketing tool in the directory, so the scores are comparable.

That meant using the product, testing the features that matter most for marketing work, reading the docs, and checking whether pricing is upfront or hidden behind a sales call. We also compared it against ActiveCampaign and Sintra to see where it stands.

Key Features

What CleverTap actually gives you:

  • Customization: Flexible customization to match your specific workflow
  • Campaign Management: Plan, execute, and track marketing campaigns
  • Audience Targeting: Reach the right people with segmentation tools
  • Performance Analytics: Measure campaign ROI and key metrics

Pricing

CleverTap doesn't list pricing publicly on their website, so you'll need to reach out to their sales team for a quote. That's fairly common for tools aimed at larger teams, but it does make it harder to evaluate quickly.

To give you a rough sense of the market, comparable marketing tools like ActiveCampaign and Sintra charge in the range of custom pricing to custom pricing/mo, which should help you calibrate expectations.

Pros and Cons

What we like

  • This is a tool built specifically for marketing, which means the features are tailored to real use cases in this space rather than being generic functionality that sort of applies
  • The campaign workflows feel like they were designed by someone who's actually run marketing at a real company. They follow the natural rhythm of how campaigns get planned, launched, and measured
  • It focuses on doing one thing well rather than trying to be a Swiss Army knife, which usually means the core features get more development attention and polish than they would in an all-in-one platform

What could be better

  • Pricing isn't listed publicly, so you'll have to sit through a sales call just to find out if it's in your budget. That alone is a friction point for smaller teams
  • Because it focuses on marketing specifically, you'll still need separate tools for sales, customer support, and other functions. It won't replace your entire stack
  • Larger organizations with complex requirements may find that some of the advanced features they expect from enterprise software are missing or underdeveloped

Who It's For (and Who It's Not)

Good fit: CleverTap makes the most sense for marketing teams and agencies that are juggling multiple campaigns simultaneously and need a central place to plan, execute, and measure everything without losing track of what's running where. If that sounds like your situation, it's worth at least testing it out.

Skip it if: you only run one campaign a quarter and it's mostly a single email blast, this level of tooling adds complexity without giving you much in return. In that case, you might want to look at ActiveCampaign as a lighter-weight option.

Bottom Line

We gave CleverTap 4/5. Does its core job well. Worth the investment if marketing is central to your daily work. If you only need it occasionally, look at a simpler option.

In short: CleverTap is a strong choice for marketing teams and agencies that are juggling multiple campaigns simultaneously and need a central place to plan. you only run one campaign a quarter and it's mostly a single email blast, this level of tooling adds complexity without giving you much in return.

How CleverTap works

CleverTap is an all-in-one customer engagement and retention platform built for consumer apps. It ingests behavioral event and profile data, segments it, and orchestrates campaigns across eight channels: push notifications, email, WhatsApp Business API, SMS, in-app messages, web messaging, RCS and other mobile surfaces. Sitting on top are analytics (funnels, pivots, flows, RFM-based automated segments), experimentation, personalization, and CleverAI for predictive segmentation, generative content and agentic assistance. The company says it serves 2,000+ brands, concentrated in e-commerce, subscriptions, financial services and gaming.

Getting data in starts with instrumenting your apps and websites with CleverTap SDKs to stream user actions and profile attributes. Data can also arrive through REST APIs, CSV upload, scheduled SFTP, or warehouse connectors for BigQuery, Snowflake, Databricks, Amazon Redshift and Microsoft Fabric. CDP and analytics tools (Segment, mParticle, Amplitude, Mixpanel, PostHog) and attribution SDKs (AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Airbridge) feed in alongside.

On the way out, delivery uses your own provider accounts for email and SMS (SendGrid, Twilio and other SMS/WhatsApp vendors). Audiences sync to Facebook Audience Network, Google Ads and TikTok for remarketing, and CRM connectors cover Salesforce, HubSpot, Pipedrive, Zoho and LeadSquared. Campaign logic is built in a journey orchestrator, with IntelliNODE and Lifecycle Optimizer handling AI-driven path selection on the top tier.

Where CleverTap wins

  • Channel coverage is genuinely broad in one tool. Push, email, WhatsApp, SMS, in-app, web and RCS all live together, so you are not stitching a separate ESP and push vendor into a coherent lifecycle.
  • Data-in options are unusually complete. SDKs, APIs, CSV, SFTP, and native warehouse connectors to Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, Redshift and Microsoft Fabric.
  • Analytics are first-class rather than bolted on. Funnels, pivots, flows and automated RFM segmentation sit next to the campaign builder, so you analyze and act in the same place.
  • The ecosystem runs both directions. Attribution SDKs and CDPs feed in, and audiences push out to Google Ads, Meta and TikTok for paid remarketing.
  • There is a real way to start. A 30-day free trial on the entry tier, plus published self-serve pricing beginning at the Essentials plan with MAU bands from 5,000 upward.

Where it falls short

  • Feature gating across the three tiers is heavy. Lifecycle Optimizer, IntelliNODE, predictive segmentation, product recommendations and web native display are all Cutting Edge only.
  • Data retention is a paid lever. Three years on lower tiers versus ten years on Cutting Edge, which directly affects cohort and LTV analysis.
  • A long list of capabilities are separately priced add-ons. Advanced Email, WhatsApp, RCS, Visual Editor, Promos, Reminders, Message Archiving and Product Experiences are not included.
  • The published price is hard to translate. It is quoted in rupees with a steep discount attached, and Advanced and Cutting Edge carry no listed price at all, so real cost requires sales, and the add-ons compound it.
  • It is mobile-app-first by design. You need SDK instrumentation to get value, and a purely web or B2B business will find both the data model and the channel mix a poor fit.

Who should use CleverTap

CleverTap suits consumer mobile apps at scale: e-commerce, fintech, gaming and subscription media, with an engineering team able to instrument SDKs and a retention or CRM owner to actually run lifecycle campaigns. It rewards organizations that already treat retention as a function rather than a project, because the analytics and orchestration only pay off when someone is iterating on them weekly.

It is strongest where WhatsApp and RCS carry real messaging volume, notably India, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. That channel depth is a meaningful differentiator in those markets and much less so elsewhere.

Skip it if you are B2B, web-only, or small. Skip it too if you want fixed, transparent pricing, because the add-on model makes the real bill hard to predict before you talk to sales.
