Short answer: pick Wispr Flow if you want polished text with no setup on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android and are fine with your voice being transcribed in the cloud ($15 a month, or $12 a month billed yearly). Pick Superwhisper if you want on-device models, custom modes and the option to pay once ($8.49 a month, $84.99 a year or $249.99 for life). Over three years, Superwhisper costs about 40% less. Prices verified on both vendors' pages in October 2026.

Picture someone who dictates emails, Slack replies and AI prompts for a few hours a day. For that person the two apps do the same core job: talk, and formatted text lands where the cursor is. The real differences are where your voice goes and how you pay, and those are what this page compares.

How much does each one cost?

Wispr Flow sells per user, per month. Pro is $15 a month on monthly billing or $12 a month on annual billing, which Wispr labels a 20% discount. Growth, the next tier up, adds SSO, HIPAA enforcement across the organization and locked-off model training for $23 a user a month, or $18 billed yearly. Growth with unlimited Notetaker access costs $33 a month, or $26 billed yearly. Students and educators with an education email get 50% off Pro.

Superwhisper has one paid tier, Pro, with three ways to pay: $8.49 a month, $84.99 a year (it calls this two months free) or a one-time lifetime license. Pro adds unlimited cloud and local AI models, your own AI API keys, translation into English and audio and video file transcription. Students get 40% off Pro, and our Superwhisper discount page covers a separate first-time offer.

What do you pay over 1 and 3 years?

How much does each one cost?: Wispr Flow vs Superwhisper 2026: Cloud or On-Device Dictation?. Last updated November 2026.
Plan 1 year 3 years
Wispr Flow Pro, billed monthly $180 $540
Wispr Flow Pro, billed yearly $144 $432
Superwhisper Pro, monthly $101.88 $305.64
Superwhisper Pro, yearly $84.99 $254.97
Superwhisper Pro, lifetime $249.99 $249.99

Dupple data: over three years, the Superwhisper lifetime license costs $182.01 less than Wispr Flow Pro on yearly billing, and it pays for itself against Wispr's yearly plan after about 21 months (our arithmetic, October 2026). Against Superwhisper's own yearly plan, the lifetime license only pulls ahead in the third year.

For a team of five, the gap holds. Five Wispr Flow Pro seats on yearly billing cost $720 a year, and five on Growth cost $1,080. Five Superwhisper Pro yearly licenses bought one by one cost $424.95, though Superwhisper's centralized billing and authentication sit in its custom-priced Enterprise plan.

Superwhisper wins on price at every billing option. Wispr's answer is that its Pro plan includes team features Superwhisper keeps for Enterprise: a shared dictionary and snippets, centralized billing, user management and usage analytics, with no seat minimum.

Does Superwhisper work offline?

Yes. Superwhisper says its on-device models keep your audio on your machine and work without an internet connection, on both Mac and Windows. There is one caveat from its own FAQ: offline models run well only on Apple Silicon Macs, and Intel Macs work best with cloud models.

Wispr Flow works the other way. Its privacy page describes each dictation being captured on your device, sent to Wispr's servers over TLS 1.2 or higher, transcribed there and then deleted, unless you turn on Dictation cloud storage. You can opt out of model training at any time, and on Growth and Enterprise training is off by default and locked.

Superwhisper wins on privacy for anyone who handles sensitive drafts and wants nothing leaving the laptop. Wispr is the better documented option for a company that needs a signed BAA, ISO 27001 and admin-enforced policies across a team.

Is Wispr Flow free?

Yes, with a weekly cap. Wispr's free plan gives you 2,000 words a week on desktop and limited weekly use on mobile, plus dictionary and snippets and limited Notetaker access. That is enough to try it on real emails for a week or two, but a heavy dictator will hit the cap quickly, and Pro is where "unlimited dictations" starts.

Superwhisper's free plan has no word cap on its local Whisper models. It also includes custom prompt control and Mac meeting notes. New users get 3,000 words of Pro features before the free tier takes over, and every paid plan comes with a 30-day refund. Superwhisper wins on the free plan if your hardware runs local models well.

Which works on Windows and Android?

Both now run on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. Wispr Flow presents itself as the same product on all four, and its Notetaker is Mac and Windows only. Superwhisper started on the Mac and now ships Windows 10 and 11, iOS and Android apps, with meeting notes on the Mac only.

The difference is the license. A Superwhisper Pro license activates on as many of your devices as you like, while Wispr Flow bills per user. For one person on a laptop and a phone, both setups work without extra cost. Call this round a tie, with a slight edge to Wispr for teams that mix Windows laptops and phones and want one admin console.

Which is better for coding by voice?

Both target developers, in different ways. Wispr Flow's developer page says it handles camelCase, snake_case and acronyms, learns terms like Supabase or MongoDB, and tags files in Cursor and Windsurf so a spoken prompt carries the right context. Superwhisper works system-wide in any IDE or terminal, and its custom modes let you write a system prompt for code, so dictation into Claude Code or VS Code comes out formatted the way you want.

Superwhisper wins for developers who want control, because custom modes and your own API keys let you tune the output. Wispr wins for developers who live in Cursor or Windsurf and want file tagging without building anything.

Strengths and weaknesses

Wispr Flow

  • Strength: Pro includes team features (shared dictionary, centralized billing, usage analytics) with no seat minimum.
  • Strength: HIPAA support with a signed BAA on any plan, plus SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001.
  • Weakness: the free plan stops at 2,000 words a week on desktop.
  • Weakness: every dictation goes through Wispr's servers for transcription, which rules it out for anyone who wants audio to stay on the device.
  • Weakness: no lifetime option; three years of Pro on yearly billing costs $432.

Superwhisper

  • Strength: on-device models that keep audio on your machine and work offline.
  • Strength: a one-time lifetime license and unlimited devices per license.
  • Weakness: offline models run well only on Apple Silicon, not Intel Macs.
  • Weakness: team billing and authentication need the custom-priced Enterprise plan.
  • Weakness: meeting notes are Mac only.

Who should pick which

  • Solo writer or manager who wants it to work today: Wispr Flow. Start free, move to Pro on yearly billing if the weekly cap gets in the way.
  • Privacy-minded professional on an Apple Silicon Mac: Superwhisper, and consider the lifetime license if you plan to keep it past two years.
  • Developer: Superwhisper for custom modes in any IDE; Wispr if your work runs through Cursor or Windsurf.
  • Team of 5 to 50 that needs admin controls: Wispr Flow Pro or Growth. Superwhisper fits only if you are ready to talk to its sales team about Enterprise.

What are the alternatives?

If neither fits, start with the built-in option: our guide to typing with your voice on a Mac shows what Apple's free dictation already does. For meeting notes rather than dictation, see the best AI note-taking apps, and for transcribing recorded files, our list of the best free transcription software.

Toolradar data: Toolradar, our software directory, tracks 176 transcription tools as of 28 October 2026, and 70% of them are free, freemium or open source (Toolradar transcription ranking). Both apps have profiles there: Wispr Flow on Toolradar and Superwhisper on Toolradar. The wider category is ranked in our best AI transcription tools guide.

FAQ

Is Wispr Flow or Superwhisper cheaper?

Superwhisper is cheaper. Its Pro plan costs $8.49 a month or $84.99 a year, against $15 a month or $12 a month billed yearly for Wispr Flow Pro. Superwhisper also sells a $249.99 lifetime license, which Wispr does not offer.

Does Superwhisper work offline?

Yes. Superwhisper runs on-device models that keep audio on your machine and need no internet connection. Its FAQ says offline models run well on Apple Silicon Macs, while Intel Macs work best with its cloud models.

Is Wispr Flow free?

Yes. The free plan includes 2,000 words a week on desktop and limited weekly use on mobile. Wispr Flow Pro removes the word limit and adds team features such as a shared dictionary and centralized billing.

Which is cheaper over 3 years?

Superwhisper's lifetime license, at $249.99, or its yearly plan at $254.97 over three years. Wispr Flow Pro costs $432 over the same period on yearly billing and $540 on monthly billing (our arithmetic on October 2026 prices).

Does Wispr Flow send my voice to the cloud?

Yes. Wispr's privacy page says each dictation is sent to its servers over TLS, transcribed, and the audio deleted unless you turn on Dictation cloud storage. You can opt out of model training, and Growth and Enterprise lock training off.

Can a team use Superwhisper?

Yes, through its Enterprise plan, which adds SOC 2 Type II, centralized billing and authentication, model access control and volume discounts at a custom price. Individuals can also buy Pro licenses one by one.

Bottom line

Wispr Flow is the easier buy for anyone who values zero setup and team management, and its cloud processing comes with strong compliance paperwork. Superwhisper is the better deal for an individual, especially on an Apple Silicon Mac, because it costs less every year, can run fully offline and can be bought once. If you dictate all day and expect to keep the habit, the lifetime license is the cheapest path on either vendor's price list.
