Is DeepSeek Free in 2026? Chat, API and Self-Hosting Costs
Trusted by790,000+ Techpresso subscribers·Editorial policy·How we make money

Yes, for most people, and completely so if you only use the chat. DeepSeek's web chat and app list no paid plan at all, the API bills per token (deepseek-flash starts at $0.15 per million input tokens off-peak), and the model weights are MIT-licensed, so self-hosting costs only your hardware. Verified on deepseek.com and DeepSeek's API docs in October 2026.

That makes DeepSeek unusual among the big chatbots, since every other major one has an upgrade button, and the free tier exists to push you toward it. DeepSeek has none, so the real questions are different: what you pay with instead of money, and at what point a developer starts getting a bill.

Dupple data: Toolradar, our software directory, tracks 1,573 AI assistants as of October 2026, and 61% of them are free, freemium or open source. Free is the norm in this category; what sets DeepSeek apart is that its chat has no paid tier sitting above the free one.

Does DeepSeek have a paid plan?

No paid chat plan exists, and the product lineup shows why. DeepSeek's site lists four products, DeepSeek Web, the app, DeepSeek Harness and the API Platform, and the only pricing link on it goes to API pricing. There is no Plus, Pro or Max tier for the chatbot, and DeepSeek's terms of use do not describe one.

Compare that with the rest of the market. Gemini's free plan is metered with upgrades to Google AI Pro and Ultra, as our Is Gemini free? guide explains, and Grok has its own paid ladder, covered in Is Grok free?. DeepSeek's business model runs through the API instead, where developers pay per token.

For the person typing questions into a browser, this means you will never hit a paywall on DeepSeek chat. You get DeepThink (its reasoning mode) and web search in the same free interface, with no feature held back for subscribers.

Does DeepSeek have message limits?

DeepSeek publishes no message cap for its free chat, and its terms do not set one. Third-party sites quote hourly message limits and sign-up token grants, but none of those figures appear on DeepSeek's own pages, so treat them as unconfirmed.

The catch is availability rather than a quota. DeepSeek's terms let it add, modify or suspend services, and the free chat comes with no uptime promise, so if your work depends on guaranteed access, the API or a self-hosted copy is the safer route.

How much does the DeepSeek API cost?

The API is pay-as-you-go from a prepaid balance, with no monthly fee. DeepSeek bills tokens in and tokens out, at rates that change with the time of day:

How much does the DeepSeek API cost?: Is DeepSeek Free in 2026? Chat, API and Self-Hosting Costs. Last updated November 2026.
Per 1M tokens deepseek-flash off-peak deepseek-flash peak deepseek-v4-pro off-peak deepseek-v4-pro peak
Input, cache hit $0.003 $0.006 $0.022 $0.044
Input, cache miss $0.15 $0.30 $0.66 $1.32
Output $0.60 $1.20 $1.98 $3.96

deepseek-flash runs DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017 and deepseek-v4-pro runs DeepSeek-V4-Pro-0813. Both have a 1M-token context window and up to 384K tokens of output, and both support tool calls, JSON output and an Anthropic-compatible endpoint, but only Flash accepts images, which matters if your workflow sends screenshots or scanned documents.

Peak and off-peak hours

Off-peak rates are half the peak rates, and they depend on the clock, not on a plan or a coupon. Peak hours are 01:00 to 04:00 and 06:00 to 10:00 UTC, Monday to Friday, excluding Chinese public holidays. Every other hour, weekends included, is off-peak.

For US users this is good news. In US Eastern standard time, those peak windows fall at 8 to 11 pm and 1 to 5 am (our conversion), so a US team working normal office hours pays off-peak rates almost all the time. A European team working mornings, by contrast, lands in the peak window daily.

A month of API use, worked out

Take a realistic work month: 20 million input tokens (all cache misses, the expensive case) and 4 million output tokens. Our arithmetic at DeepSeek's list prices:

How much does the DeepSeek API cost?: Is DeepSeek Free in 2026? Chat, API and Self-Hosting Costs. Last updated November 2026.
Model All off-peak All peak
deepseek-flash 20 x $0.15 + 4 x $0.60 = $5.40 $10.80
deepseek-v4-pro 20 x $0.66 + 4 x $1.98 = $21.12 $42.24

Add 1,000 web searches through the Search API and the bill grows by $0.75. Cache hits cut the input price by more than 95% on both models (our arithmetic), so an app that resends the same long prompt pays far less than this table shows.

Fees come out of your topped-up balance or a "granted balance", and DeepSeek spends any granted balance first. Treat any granted balance as a bonus and plan your budget on topped-up funds.

Is DeepSeek free for commercial use?

Yes, on both the chat and the model side, with one condition worth knowing. DeepSeek's terms assign you any rights in the outputs and list derivative product development and training other models among the allowed uses, as long as the use is legal. The open model weights carry the MIT license, which allows commercial use, modification and redistribution.

One rule from the terms matters for business use: outputs used in decisions about people, such as hiring, credit, housing or medical matters, must be reviewed by a human. That is a sensible policy for any AI tool, but DeepSeek writes it into the contract.

Can I run DeepSeek locally for free?

Yes, the license is free. DeepSeek publishes its models on Hugging Face under the MIT license, including DeepSeek-V4-Pro and the newest DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017, uploaded on 17 October 2026.

The hardware is where the cost moves, and it is not small. DeepSeek's model card describes DeepSeek-V4-Pro as a 1.6-trillion-parameter model with 49 billion active parameters, and DeepSeek-V4-Flash at 284 billion parameters with 13 billion active. Models that size need server-class GPUs, not a laptop, so self-hosting the full models is a project for a company with infrastructure or a cloud budget.

Smaller teams usually run a reduced or community version through a local runner instead. Our guide to the best free local LLM tools covers the apps that make that practical. The payoff is control: nothing you type leaves your own machines.

Is DeepSeek safe to use for work?

It depends on what you put in it, and the data question comes first. DeepSeek's privacy policy says it directly collects, processes and stores personal data in the People's Republic of China. That is a factual data-residency point, and for many companies it settles the question for anything confidential, regulated or covered by a client contract.

Two options soften it. DeepSeek uses inputs and outputs, de-identified, to improve its services, and you can opt out by turning off "Improve the model for everyone". And self-hosting the open weights keeps all data in-house, which removes the data-location concern entirely.

A practical rule for work: use the hosted chat for public information, drafts and code you would post on GitHub anyway, and use a self-hosted copy or another vendor for customer data. Check your employer's AI policy before you start, since many companies keep an approved-tools list.

If you are deciding between DeepSeek and the market leader, DeepSeek vs ChatGPT compares the two on everyday work, and the best ChatGPT alternatives widens the list. Teams routing API calls across several model vendors should read our best LLM gateways guide, and Is Microsoft Copilot free? covers another no-cost assistant many offices already have. FAQ

Is DeepSeek free to use in 2026?

Yes. DeepSeek's web chat and app list no paid plan, so chatting costs nothing. The API is paid per token, from $0.15 per million input tokens on deepseek-flash off-peak, and the open model weights are free under the MIT license. Verified October 2026.

Does DeepSeek have a premium or Pro subscription?

No, DeepSeek sells no chat subscription of any kind. "deepseek-v4-pro" is the name of an API model billed per token, not a paid chat plan.

How much does the DeepSeek API cost per month?

There is no monthly fee, so you pay only for the tokens you use. A month of 20 million input tokens and 4 million output tokens costs $5.40 on deepseek-flash off-peak, or $21.12 on deepseek-v4-pro off-peak (our arithmetic). Peak-hour use doubles those figures.

When are DeepSeek API off-peak hours?

Off-peak is every hour outside 01:00 to 04:00 and 06:00 to 10:00 UTC on weekdays, plus weekends and Chinese public holidays in full. Off-peak rates are half the peak rates, and US office hours fall almost entirely off-peak.

Is DeepSeek open source and free for commercial use?

The model weights are published under the MIT license, which allows commercial use. DeepSeek's terms also assign you the rights in chat outputs and allow uses such as building derivative products.

Where does DeepSeek store my data?

DeepSeek's privacy policy says it collects, processes and stores personal data in the People's Republic of China. Self-hosting the open weights avoids that, because your data never reaches DeepSeek's servers.

Use DeepSeek's free chat for public, low-risk work, run it on your own hardware or through another vendor for anything sensitive, and price API projects on off-peak rates if your team works US hours. Start the Dupple X trial →
