PRTG's 100 free sensors is the most concrete free limit in the category, and it is worth understanding what a sensor is before assuming it is generous. One sensor is typically one measurement on one device: a switch's port status, a server's CPU, a specific service's availability. A single switch with 24 ports monitored individually can consume 24 sensors. A hundred goes quickly in a real network and comfortably covers a small one.

Zabbix

Zabbix is the strongest genuinely free option and the one to start with if you have someone to run it.

It is open source with no functional ceiling: no device limit, no metric limit, no feature held back for a paid tier. It monitors network devices, servers, services, applications and cloud resources, with alerting, dashboards and a mature templating system that means adding the fiftieth switch is nothing like adding the first.

4.5 across 315 reviews, and the complaints in a sample that size are consistent and fair: the initial configuration is substantial, the interface is dense, and the learning curve is real. None of those are surprises for infrastructure software of this age and capability.

What Zabbix is genuinely good at is being the single place everything reports to. What it is not is opinionated about security specifically. It will tell you a device is unreachable or a port has flapped; it will not tell you the traffic pattern looks like exfiltration unless you built that rule yourself.

Nagios Core

Nagios Core is free, open source, and has been the backbone of monitoring in a great many organisations for two decades.

Its plugin ecosystem is the largest in this space, which means whatever obscure device you need to check, someone has written the check. That is the reason it persists.

Configuration is file-based and unapologetically old-fashioned, which experienced operators consider a feature, because it is version-controllable and reviewable like any other code. Newcomers usually consider it something else.

Nagios XI is the commercial version with a web interface and a one-time licence fee per node count. Not in the directory, so no verified figure from us.

PRTG Network Monitor

PRTG is the easiest to get running, by a wide margin. It auto-discovers a network, applies sensible sensors, and shows you a working dashboard in under an hour.

For a small network, the free 100 sensors is a real monitoring system rather than a trial, and for many small businesses it is the correct answer permanently.

The limitation is architectural: PRTG is Windows-based, which is either irrelevant or disqualifying depending on your environment, and there is no middle position.

Auvik

Auvik is the managed option, and its 4.6 across 434 reviews is the highest rating here.

What it does that the others do not is map the network automatically. It discovers your topology, draws it, keeps it current, and shows you what changed. For a managed service provider walking into an undocumented client network, that alone justifies the product.

There is no free tier, and pricing is by quote. If you have no operator to run Zabbix, this is what you are actually comparing against, and the comparison is against a salary rather than against a free tool.

The gap this whole category has

Something worth saying plainly, because it is the most common mistake made after reading an article like this.

Network monitoring and network security monitoring are not the same discipline. Zabbix, Nagios and PRTG are availability and performance tools. They tell you what is up, what is slow, and what stopped responding. They will detect a device going offline in seconds.

They will not detect a workstation quietly beaconing to a command-and-control server every twenty minutes, because from an availability perspective everything is fine. Detecting that requires traffic analysis, which is a different class of tool: Zeek for protocol-level logging, Suricata for intrusion detection, or Security Onion, which bundles both with the analysis stack around them. All three are free, all three are excellent, and none of them appears in most "network security monitoring" listicles because they are harder to write about.

What free costs

Zabbix free, self-run: a server, and realistically a day a week of someone's attention once it is covering a real network. At any reasonable salary that is the most expensive option in this article, and it is still the right one if that person exists and already has the day.

PRTG free, 100 sensors: an afternoon of setup and very little after. Genuinely cheap, genuinely capped.

Auvik paid: a subscription instead of a day a week. For a team of three managing many networks, this is straightforwardly the cheaper option, and its 4.6 suggests people who make that trade do not regret it.

The failure mode is the one in the middle: installing Zabbix, configuring it enthusiastically for a fortnight, and then not looking at it again. That produces alert fatigue, a dashboard nobody trusts, and a false sense that monitoring is handled.

Pick based on the operator you actually have, not the one you intend to hire.

Getting the first week right

Whichever tool you install, the first week decides whether it survives, and there is a fairly reliable way to get it right.

Monitor less than you can. The instinct is to enable everything, because everything is available and free. What follows is four hundred alerts a day, of which four matter, and within a month the alert channel is muted. Start with the handful of failures that would actually wake you: the internet link, the firewall, the domain controller, the database. Add the fifth thing only after the first four have been quiet and correct for a while.

Define what an alert means before you create one. An alert is a request for a human to do something. If the answer to "what would I do about this at 3am" is nothing, it is a dashboard metric, not an alert. This single distinction eliminates most alert fatigue in this category.

Write down the baseline. Monitoring tells you something changed; it cannot tell you whether the previous state was correct. A network that was already misconfigured before you installed Zabbix will simply be monitored while misconfigured. An hour spent recording what normal looks like, which ports should be open and which devices should be talking to which, makes every alert afterwards interpretable.

Test the alert path. The most common discovery during a real incident is that the notification went to a mailbox nobody reads, or to a person who left. Break something deliberately in week one and confirm a human hears about it.

None of that is about which tool you chose, which is rather the point.
