Editorial review. We tested Software Advice hands-on for this writeup. Pricing, feature claims, and integrations were verified against the vendor site as of July 2026. We have no paid relationship influencing the score.

What Is Software Advice?

Software Advice is the B2B software comparison and advisory platform owned by Gartner. The service connects business buyers with matching software vendors through personalized consultations with software advisors who research the market for them.

The pitch is shortcut to good decisions. Most business buyers face 50+ software options in any major category (CRM, ERP, project management). Researching all of them requires dozens of demo calls and weeks of work. Software Advice's advisors compress this into a 20-minute call followed by 3-5 matching options to consider.

Founded in 2005, Software Advice predates the modern G2/Capterra review economy. It still operates the original advisor-first model where humans help match buyers to vendors, supplemented by the Gartner research depth behind the brand. Most buyer-facing services are free; the company's revenue comes from vendors paying for qualified referrals.

How Software Advice Works

Submit your requirements through the web form. Specify category (CRM, accounting, etc.), company size, industry, must-have features, budget range, and timeline. An advisor calls within 24 hours.

The 20-30 minute advisor call dives into specifics. They ask follow-up questions about workflows, existing tools, pain points, and which features actually matter for your business. The goal is to filter the dozens of options down to a handful that genuinely fit.

After the call, you receive a curated shortlist with 3-5 vendor options matching your needs. Each option includes pricing context, key features, and notes on why this vendor was selected for your situation. Software Advice optionally connects you with each vendor for demos.

The platform also hosts written reviews from real users, similar to G2 or Capterra. Read reviews independently or use them as supplementary research alongside advisor recommendations.

Software Advice Pricing in 2026

Free for buyers. Software vendors pay Software Advice for qualified referrals. Buyer-facing services (advisor calls, reports, software recommendations) cost nothing.

The trade-off is transparency about the model. Software Advice has financial relationships with the vendors it recommends. This does not necessarily bias recommendations toward worse software, but it does mean the recommended list comes from vendors who pay rather than the entire universe of options.

Where Software Advice Wins

  • Free for buyers: real advisory time at no cost.
  • Saves research time: 20 minutes with an advisor vs hours reading G2 reviews.
  • Gartner backing: research depth behind the brand.
  • Vendor coordination: advisors connect you with multiple vendors so you can run parallel demos.
  • Personalized to your context: requirements gathered before recommendations are made.

Where It Falls Short

  • Vendor-paid model: recommendations come from vendors who pay; the long tail of niche tools may not appear.
  • Advisor quality varies: experienced advisors give better recommendations; junior ones may follow scripts.
  • Less suited for niche categories: very specialized software (vertical-specific tools, emerging categories) may not be represented.
  • Email and call follow-up can feel pushy: vendors who get your contact may pursue aggressively.

Software Advice vs G2 vs Capterra vs GetApp

Productivity tools, published pricing

ToolPricingModel
1Password $2.99/mo (Individual), $4.49/mo (Families), $8.99/mo (Business), $24.95/mo (Teams Starter Pack), custom pricing (Enterprise) Subscription
Notion Free, $10/mo (Plus), $18/mo (Business) Freemium
Airtable Free, $20/seat/mo (Team), $45/seat/mo (Business) Freemium
Freshservice $19/agent/mo (Starter), $49/agent/mo (Growth), $99/agent/mo (Pro), Custom (Enterprise) Subscription
Todoist Free, $5/mo (Pro), $8/user/mo (Business) Freemium

G2 is the review-driven alternative. Read thousands of user reviews, compare features in grids. Better for self-directed research; Software Advice is better for guided recommendations.

Capterra is the closest direct competitor (also owned by Gartner). Similar advisor model. Choose based on which platform's category coverage matches your needs.

GetApp is another Gartner property targeting similar audiences. Functional overlap with Software Advice.

TrustRadius emphasizes verified user reviews with stronger enterprise focus.

Who Should Use Software Advice

Mid-market companies evaluating new software: too many options to research, not enough internal capacity.

First-time buyers in a category: when you have not bought CRM or ERP before, an advisor helps surface considerations.

Buyers who prefer guided over self-directed research: advisor calls suit some buying styles better than reading reviews.

Skip it if: you prefer self-directed research (use G2 or Capterra), you already know exactly which vendor you want (skip directly to that vendor), or you operate in a niche category not well-covered.

How Software Advice works

Software Advice is not software you run. It is a B2B software comparison and lead-referral marketplace, now part of G2 Digital Markets. Buyers either browse category directories (accounting, CRM, ERP, HR and payroll, construction, legal, medical, project management, retail POS and 100+ more) backed by a claimed 2.5 million-plus verified user reviews, or hand their requirements to a human advisor who calls them back with a shortlist. The company states it has served 1 million-plus businesses across 150 industries with 55+ software advisors on staff. On the vendor side of the same marketplace, companies buy BANT-qualified leads and paid placement.

The buyer path is short: a web form with your business details, then a phone call from an advisor to talk through goals, needs and budget, then a tailored list of typically 3 to 5 options to book demos or trials, pitched as arriving within about 15 minutes.

The directory works without the call, and the sort options give away the mechanics. Category pages can be sorted four ways: Sponsored sorts by vendors running active bidding campaigns, highest bid to lowest, and the other three are review count, average rating and A-Z. Paid and unpaid listings are visually distinguishable, as the site itself explains: "Vendors who have paid for placement have a 'Visit Website' button, whereas unpaid vendors have a 'Learn More' button."

Editorial and FrontRunners content is built on stated inputs: verified reviews, proprietary product data and advisor conversations with buyers. One category page cites 3,405 verified reviews and 4,595 buyer conversations behind its ranking, and there is a separately published methodology. Vendors sign up to get listed and to buy into the pay-per-lead (PPL) program, which delivers BANT-verified prospects plus enriched buyer data.

Where Software Advice wins

  • Paid placement is disclosed rather than hidden. The sponsored sort is explicitly described as bid-ordered, and the Visit Website versus Learn More button tells you at a glance which listings paid.
  • The referral-fee conflict is stated in plain text on category pages: "When our advisors match you to a software provider, we may earn a referral fee."
  • Review corpus and category breadth are large enough to be a useful starting shortlist (2.5M+ reviews, 100+ categories), with heavy coverage of vertical software like construction, legal and medical that generalist sites cover thinly.
  • Research inputs are quantified per category rather than hand-waved, citing specific counts of verified reviews and advisor conversations behind a given ranking.
  • The advisor service costs the buyer nothing and puts a human on the phone, which is faster than self-serve research if you do not yet know the category vocabulary.

Where it falls short

  • You are the product on the buyer side. The free advice is funded by referral fees and pay-per-lead sales, so submitting the form sends your contact details to vendors and you should expect sales calls.
  • Rankings are not neutral by construction. The default discovery surface is bid-influenced and vendors who buy nothing get a weaker call-to-action, so absence from the top of a list says very little about product quality.
  • No pricing transparency on the vendor side. The PPL program is described but no cost per lead, contract minimum or placement rate is published anywhere on the site, so vendors must go through sales to learn the price.
  • Site structure makes the policies hard to audit. The about, review-guidelines and vendor-policy URLs are scattered or 404, and the homepage did not surface a footer with a reviews-verification policy, so the verification process is asserted more than documented.
  • The advisor shortlist is capped at 3 to 5 options and drawn only from vendors reachable through the platform, a narrower funnel than the full directory.

Who should use Software Advice

It suits buyers in a vertical or unfamiliar category who want a fast, human-guided shortlist plus a large review corpus to sanity-check it, and vendors in mature categories willing to pay per lead for BANT-qualified demand. The vertical coverage is the real draw for anyone shopping construction, legal or medical software.

It is not the place to look for a neutral ranking, and not for buyers who do not want a sales call. If that is you, read the directory, ignore the sponsored sort, and skip the form rather than becoming a lead.
