Short answer: Runway has a Free plan with 125 one-time credits, then Standard at $15/mo ($12 billed yearly), Pro at $35 ($28) and Max at $95 ($76). Credits are what you really buy: Gen-4.5 video uses 12 credits per second, so Standard covers about 52 seconds a month. The developer API sells credits at $0.01 each. Verified on Runway's pages, October 2026.

Say you are a marketer who needs 2 minutes of finished Gen-4.5 footage a month for ads and social clips. That is 1,440 credits, more than twice what Standard includes, so the plan most people start on is the wrong one for this job. The tables below show which plan fits, and what each second of video really costs.

Plans, credits and seconds read on Runway pricing; API rates on Runway's API pricing docs, October 28, 2026. Seconds per plan are Runway's own figures; cost per second is our arithmetic (yearly price divided by seconds).

Dupple data: Toolradar, our software directory, tracks 158 AI video generation tools as of October 28, 2026, and the median cheapest paid plan among the 46 that publish one is $19.95/mo (Toolradar's AI video generation ranking). Runway's Standard plan sits below that median on yearly billing, but the credit math above matters more than the sticker price.

How much does Runway cost in 2026?

Between $144 and $912 a year on a paid plan, depending on the tier (our arithmetic on yearly billing). Standard billed yearly comes to $144, Pro to $336 and Max to $912. Paying month to month costs more, and Runway prints the gap itself: yearly billing saves $36 a year on Standard, $84 on Pro and $228 on Max.

What changes between tiers is not access to models (every paid plan lists all AI video and image models) but how much you can generate and how you work. Standard runs 5 generations in parallel and up to 3 projects. Pro raises that to 15 parallel generations and 5 projects and adds a custom voice clone, a Brand Kit and top-up credits anytime. Max adds 20 parallel generations, 10 projects, studio-grade output (HDR, ProRes, image sequences) and early access to new models.

Every paid plan removes watermarks and includes 4K upscaling; storage runs from 20GB on Standard to 100GB on Pro and 500GB on Max.

How many seconds of video do I get per plan?

It depends on the model, and Gen-4.5 is the yardstick. Runway's FAQ says Gen-4.5 uses 12 credits per second, which its model table lists as 60 credits per 5-second clip. Here is what other popular models cost in credits on the app:

Model Credits Clips a year on Standard On Pro On Max
Gen-4.5 60 per 5 seconds 125 450 1,900
Aleph 2.0 140 per 5 seconds 53 192 814
Kling 4.0 (1080p) 118 per 5 seconds; 89 with 25% off until November 30 84 303 1,280
Seedance 2.0 Pro (1080p) 160 per 4 seconds 46 168 712
Gen-4 Image (1080p) 8 per image 937 images 3,375 images 14,250 images

Credits and clips per year as printed on Runway's pricing page, October 28, 2026, based on yearly credit totals (7,500 on Standard, 27,000 on Pro, 114,000 on Max). The Kling 4.0 discount is a limited-time promotion that ends November 30.

What this means for your budget: a premium model can cut your seconds by more than half. The same Standard plan that gives 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 gives far fewer seconds of Aleph 2.0, so pick the model before you pick the plan.

Which Runway plan do I need for N seconds a month?

Which Runway plan do I need for N seconds a month?: Runway Pricing 2026: Plans, Credits and the Real Cost per Second of Video. Last updated November 2026.
Gen-4.5 seconds you need a month Credits Cheapest plan that covers it Yearly-billed price
Up to 52 Up to 625 Standard $12/mo
Up to 187 Up to 2,250 Pro $28/mo
Up to 791 Up to 9,500 Max $76/mo

Our arithmetic at 12 credits per second, on plan allowances from Runway's pricing page, October 28, 2026.

For the 2-minute-a-month marketer: Pro covers 120 seconds with room for retakes, at $28 a month billed yearly or $35 month to month. That headroom matters, because a rejected generation costs the same credits as a keeper.

Is the Runway API cheaper than a plan?

Per second, the API beats Standard and Pro on either billing; only Max on yearly billing is cheaper. On Runway's developer platform, credits cost $0.01 each and Gen-4.5 also uses 12 credits per second, so a second of Gen-4.5 costs $0.12 (our arithmetic). That compares with $0.23 on Standard, $0.15 on Pro and $0.096 on Max, all on yearly billing.

For the 2-minute scenario, 1,440 API credits come to $14.40 a month, about half of Pro's yearly-billed price. The catch is real: API credits are separate from your app plan, you call the API from code, and you lose the app's editor, projects, upscaling and voice tools. It suits a team with a developer automating ad variants, not someone who wants to iterate in a visual editor.

Do Runway credits roll over?

Only on Max. Runway's FAQ says monthly credits on Standard and Pro do not roll over and reset within 24 hours of your billing date. On Max, up to one month of unused credits carries into the next month.

If you run out, you can buy extra credits from the Plans & Billing page in your dashboard, with a minimum purchase of 1,000 credits, and purchased credits never expire. Check the per-credit price there before you rely on top-ups. Upgrades take effect immediately and are prorated, so moving from Standard to Pro mid-month gives you the extra credits right away; downgrades apply at the next billing cycle.

Is Runway free?

Yes, as a trial. The Free plan costs $0 and includes 125 one-time credits that do not expire, a selection of models and 5GB of storage. At 12 credits per second, that is about 10 seconds of Gen-4.5 in total (our arithmetic), enough to test prompts, not to produce anything regular. Hidden costs to budget for

  • Retakes: every generation spends credits, keeper or not, so plan for more seconds than you publish.
  • Premium models: Aleph 2.0 at 140 credits per 5 seconds burns credits more than twice as fast as Gen-4.5.
  • Monthly billing: $36 to $228 a year more than yearly billing, per Runway's own figures.
  • Expiring credits: unused Standard and Pro credits vanish each cycle.
  • Promotions ending: the Kling 4.0 discount ends November 30; budget at the full 118 credits per 5 seconds after that.

Which Runway plan is worth it?

Pro, for anyone producing video every week. It is the cheapest plan that covers a couple of minutes of Gen-4.5 a month, and its cost per second is about a third lower than Standard's. Standard suits testing ideas and occasional clips. Max pays off above roughly 190 seconds a month, or when you need ProRes and HDR output for client work. Developers generating in volume should price the API first.

How we checked these prices

Every price, credit allowance and credit rate was read on runwayml.com/pricing and docs.dev.runwayml.com on October 28, 2026, in US dollars. Annual totals, cost per second and the scenario are our arithmetic, using Runway's own seconds-per-plan figures. The scenario assumes 120 seconds of Gen-4.5 a month.

625 credits a month, which Runway says equals 52 seconds of Gen-4.5, 104 seconds of Gen-4 Turbo or 78 Gen-4 images at 1080p. Premium models such as Aleph 2.0 use credits faster, so you get fewer seconds.

It is no longer listed on Runway's pricing page, which shows Free, Standard, Pro and Max for individuals, plus Team and Enterprise options. Heavy users now pick Max for its 9,500 monthly credits and one month of rollover.
