What Talkpal is

Talkpal is an AI language tutor for speaking and writing practice in 130+ languages, offering a free Basic plan and self-serve Premium from €14.99 per month or less on long plans. You talk or type to an AI tutor, get corrections and pronunciation scores, and follow a course path from A1 to C2 on the web, iOS or Android. Talkpal says it has more than 10 million users.

Our view: Talkpal is one of the cheapest ways to get unlimited speaking practice, especially in languages that mainstream apps cover only in text. The free plan is a taster, capped at 10 minutes a day, so the real decision is whether Premium's unlimited practice is worth a monthly fee that falls sharply the longer you commit.

Talkpal publishes its prices on its pricing page and sells Premium directly, with a 14-day free trial that takes no payment up front. Prices are shown in local currency and vary by location; the figures below are the euro prices.

The 24-month plan costs less than a single year at the monthly rate, but it is a two-year prepayment, so start on the trial before committing. Talkpal also lists special discounts for groups such as students, teachers, seniors and healthcare workers, and sells bulk subscriptions to schools and businesses through its sales team.

How Talkpal works

Talkpal is an AI conversation tutor for language learning. You talk or write to an AI tutor ("Emma"), and it answers with realistic synthesized voice, corrects what you said, and tracks your progress over time. It covers 130+ languages, with speech-to-text and text-to-speech available across all of them, and it wraps the AI chat in about a dozen structured practice modes instead of dropping you into a single open chatbox.

Setup is close to nonexistent. You sign up, pick a target language, and the app builds a personalized learning path that adapts automatically rather than asking you to declare a CEFR level. From there the daily loop is choosing a mode. Chat Mode is one-on-one text or voice with instant feedback and saved history. Call Mode is phone-style real-time speaking: the mic activates on its own and you can adjust the voice speed. Roleplays are scripted scenarios that run from ordering in a coffee shop to fantasy settings, with a suggestion bar proposing what you could say next. Characters lets you converse with historical or fictional figures. Debates has you argue for or against a topic and is aimed at writing and vocabulary. Sentence Mode records you and scores pronunciation out of 100 with color-coded smileys. Word Mode is image-based vocabulary with pronunciation practice, and Photo Mode asks you to describe a photo in at least 10 words and gives feedback on it.

Behind the modes sits a full course track running A1 to C2 with 20 units per level, each unit mixing Word, Sentence and Dialogue mode, so Talkpal can act as a primary curriculum rather than only a speaking supplement. It runs on web, iOS and Android with account sync across devices. It is a self-contained consumer app: no integrations, no API, no LMS or classroom tooling advertised anywhere on the site, and it needs a live internet connection because the AI processing happens in real time.

Where it falls short

• The free tier is capped at 10 minutes of practice per day with basic chat only, which is enough to explore and not enough to learn on.
• No offline mode at all. The vendor FAQ says the AI needs real-time processing, so there is no practice on a plane or a subway.
• The low monthly rate needs a long prepayment. Premium drops from €14.99 a month on monthly billing to €4.68 a month only on the 24-month plan, billed upfront at €112.49, and prices vary by country.
• The self-serve app is built for individual learners: no API or integrations are advertised, and school or company use goes through a separate bulk-subscription sales process rather than an in-app team plan.
• You cannot manually set your level. The path adapts automatically, which hurts if the app misjudges you or you want to drill one weak area.

Who should use Talkpal

Self-directed learners who want unlimited low-stakes speaking practice, especially in a less common language that Duolingo or Babbel does not cover with voice. It also suits intermediate learners stuck at the "can read, cannot speak" stage, because Call and Roleplay modes force output instead of letting you stay in recognition exercises. Skip it if you need offline practice, want a human tutor's judgment, want to drill a specific level on your own terms, or want a team plan you can buy in the app, since school and company licences go through Talkpal's sales team instead.
