How Descript works

Descript is a video and audio editor built around the transcript. Your media is auto-transcribed, and editing the text edits the timeline, so you cut by deleting words rather than scrubbing. It covers screen recording, remote multi-participant recording through Rooms, multitrack podcast editing, captions, translation and publishing. On top sits a large AI layer: Studio Sound cleanup, filler-word and retake removal, Eye Contact correction, green screen, automatic multicam, voice cloning and AI speech, AI avatars, generated video from prompts, and Underlord, an assistant that performs editing tasks for you.

You either record inside Descript or import media, and it transcribes in 25 languages even on the free tier. Recording sources can come from Zoom, SquadCast, Ecamm, Restream or Captivate. Descript fits podcasters, course creators, marketers and solo YouTubers producing a steady stream of talking-head or interview content, where speed matters more than frame-level control. It also works well as a rough-cut and transcript tool for editors who finish the job in Premiere or Resolve, provided you accept that the handoff only goes one direction.

It is a poor fit for Linux users, mobile-first creators, teams that need round-trip NLE workflows, and anyone doing high-volume AI generation. In that last case the monthly credit ceilings bite well before the price does, so model your expected AI usage against the plan caps before committing rather than looking only at the per-seat cost.
