How to Get Canva Pro for Free in 2026
Short answer: Canva Pro costs $144 a year for one person on yearly billing, as of October 2026. Four routes give premium access at no charge: a free trial, Canva Education for K-12 educators, Canva for Nonprofits and a Business trial for teams. Both trials become paid unless you cancel first. If none fits, the free plan covers light design work, and Pro earns its price once the storage or AI limits start costing you time.
Toolradar data: Of the 256 graphic design tools Toolradar tracks as of October 24, 2026, 73% are free, freemium or open source. Canva is our free pick on Toolradar's graphic design ranking, so checking the free plan first is the sensible order.
Eligibility decides whether each route is open to you, so each route below starts with Canva's own wording on who qualifies. Other assistants’ free routes are in the Dupple learning hub.
The four free routes at a glance
| Route | Who qualifies | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Pro free trial | Canva sets the eligibility and duration of its free trials | Pro features for the trial period |
| Canva Education | "K-12 (primary and secondary) educators, their students, and qualified school districts and institutions" | Most premium features |
| Canva for Nonprofits | An "eligible nonprofit" under the program's guidelines | Pro for one team of up to 50 members |
| Business trial | Whoever Canva offers the trial to; Canva sets the eligibility | The Business plan, with team invites and no billing during the trial |
Two routes depend on who you are: Education and Nonprofits. The two trials are offered at Canva's discretion, and Canva sets their eligibility.
Route 1: the Pro free trial
The Pro card on Canva's pricing page carries a "Start a free trial" button. In July 2025, Canva's FAQ gave the length as 30 days: "you can start a free 30-day trial of Canva Pro or Canva Teams." You enter a payment method to activate it, and "You can cancel any time during your trial and won't be charged" (archived pricing page, July 9, 2025).
Canva's Terms of Use say it "reserves the right to set eligibility requirements and the duration for free trials and pilots." At the end of a trial, Canva "will charge the relevant subscription fee for the next billing cycle" unless you cancel first. Check the length on your sign-up page before you start, and put the end date in your calendar.
Verdict: This is the right choice for a short job, such as one campaign or a batch of social posts, where you need Pro's templates and tools for a few weeks and not after.
Watch out: During a trial your AI allowance stays at the free level. The pricing page footnote says, "AI allowance during trial is the same as Canva Free. Access the full allowance (10x more) when you start your paid plan."
Route 2: Canva Education for K-12 educators
Canva's pricing page says: "Canva Education is available for K-12 (primary and secondary) educators, their students, and qualified school districts and institutions." Canva's Education page says that "Most of Canva's premium features are included in Canva Education." Non-profits that do not teach directly fall under the Nonprofits program instead.
Verdict: If you teach in a K-12 school, check this route before you start any trial. It is the one route on this list written for your job, and Canva's Education page says most of its premium features are included.
Watch out: The line covers K-12 educators, not higher education. The pricing page places higher education in a separate offering, Canva Campus, so a university student has no route on this list. If your institution is a college, ask whether it has bought a Canva Campus plan.
Route 3: Canva for Nonprofits
Canva's help center sets the rule: "If your organization is an eligible nonprofit, you can access Canva Pro for free as part of our Canva for Nonprofits program." The free access covers "all premium features of Canva Pro" for "one team of up to 50 members" (Canva for Nonprofits help article).
The same article sets the exclusions. Sports clubs, professional associations and businesses "aren't eligible." Canva says it reviews each application and replies "within 72 hours," and it asks applicants to check the eligibility guidelines for their own country first.
Verdict: For a team, this is the best free route on this list, provided your organization is a registered nonprofit. One application covers a team of up to 50 members.
Watch out: Applications get stuck on unclear documents or a mismatched organization category. Canva's help center says you can reapply at any time with corrected information, and there is no penalty for resubmitting.
Route 4: a Business trial for a team
The pricing page answers the team question directly: "If you're using Canva Business, you can invite other team members to join your team. You won't be billed at all during your trial period." Business is the team plan Canva now sells, at $250 a year per person on yearly billing. The older team plan is closed: "Canva Teams is no longer available for new sign-ups or upgrades." (same page)
Verdict: For a team of two or more that wants to test shared Brand Kits and approvals before paying, the Business trial is the way in. Business includes 100 Brand Kits and approvals, against 5 Brand Kits on Pro, so a team gets more from Business than from Pro.
Watch out: Pro is one person's account, so a team cannot share it. After the trial, three people on Business come to $750 a year.
What the free plan leaves out
Free is $0 for one person. Pro is $144 a year for one person on yearly billing, which is $12 a month. The gaps, from the plan cards on Canva's pricing page, look like this:
| Free | Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud storage | 5GB | 100GB |
| Brand Kits | 1, with 3 colors only | 5 |
| Templates | 1.6M+ | 3.6M+ |
| Premium photos, videos, graphics and audio | 4.7M+ | 141M+ |
| AI usage | Up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses | 10x more AI than Free |
| Affinity | Access | Access with AI |
The Pro price shown is the yearly one. The pricing page has a Monthly toggle beside the Yearly one and labels yearly billing "Save from 16%," so check the monthly figure there before you choose monthly billing. Canva's FAQ also says Pro is for one person: "Only one person can use a Canva Pro account."
Price history: Pro printed at $120 a year in two 2025 captures
Archived copies of the pricing page from March 28, 2025 and July 9, 2025 print Pro at US$120 a year for one person. The July copy also shows a banner, "Get 33% off Canva Pro when you pay yearly", so that $120 may be a promotional price. The current page lists $144 a year, which is $24 more, or 20%.
The July 2025 copy also shows the team plan at that time, Canva Teams, at $100 a year per person with a minimum of three people, or $300 a year. Canva now steers team buyers to Business at $250 a year per person, and Route 4 covers its trial.
What users report
- App Store: The US App Store listing for Canva AI Photo & Video Editor shows 4.9 stars from 3.6 million ratings. Apple's lookup data gives 4.87 from 3,589,251 ratings, with the current version released October 21, 2026. That rating covers the app for free and paid users alike, so treat it as a sentiment check, not a Pro score.
- Trustpilot: Trustpilot rates Canva 4.0 out of 5 as of October 2026 (Trustpilot).
- Hacker News: In April 2026, a commenter wrote that Affinity stays free "unless you want cloud AI functionality which requires a subscription" (thread of April 9, 2026). That fits Canva's own pages, where the free plan includes Affinity and Pro adds AI to it.
Who should pay, and who should skip
- Pay yearly if you design every week and keep hitting the 5GB storage limit or the AI cap.
- Skip Pro if you design a few times a year. The free plan keeps templates, 5GB of storage and Affinity access, which is enough for occasional work.
- Skip account sharing. Pro is one person's account, and a team needs Business.
- Move a team to Business once a trial shows that the team uses shared Brand Kits and approvals.
If your need is a different tool altogether, compare the options in Canva alternatives before you pay for anything.
Before you sign up
- Check the eligibility guidelines for your country before you apply to Nonprofits or Education.
- Put the trial end date in your calendar and cancel before it, because Canva charges the next billing cycle otherwise.
- Use your own account. Pro is for one person.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a real way to get Canva Pro for free?
Yes, but a narrow one. The four routes below are the ones Canva describes on its own pages: a Pro free trial, Canva Education for K-12 educators and their students, Canva for Nonprofits for one team of up to 50 members, and a Business trial that lets a team invite members without billing during the trial. Each route carries Canva's own terms, and Canva can change them. Other assistants have their own routes, such as Gemini Pro and Perplexity Pro.
How long is the Canva Pro free trial?
As of July 2025, Canva's FAQ gave the length as 30 days. Canva's terms let it set the duration, so check your sign-up page. If you do not cancel before the trial ends, Canva charges the next billing cycle.
How much does Canva Pro cost?
On yearly billing, $144 a year for one person, or $12 a month, as of October 2026. Canva's FAQ says a Pro account is for one person, so a team needs Business at $250 a year per person.
Can students get Canva for free?
Canva Education covers K-12 educators, their students and qualified school districts, according to the pricing page. Students join through a teacher's invitation. Higher education sits in Canva Campus, which is a separate offering.
Does the free plan include Affinity?
Yes. Canva's pricing page lists "Access to Affinity" on the free plan and "Access to Affinity with AI" on Pro.
What happens when a trial ends?
Under Canva's terms, Canva charges the subscription fee for the next billing cycle unless you cancel before the trial ends. Cancel before the end date if you do not want to continue.
The free routes are real but narrow: a Pro trial, K-12 education, a nonprofit team and a Business trial for teams. Everyone else is choosing between the free plan and a paid plan: Pro for one person, or Business for a team.
