How to Get Claude Pro for Free in 2026 (Legit Ways)
Short answer: Anthropic's pricing page lists no promo code and no Pro trial, but five official routes give you paid-tier Claude at no cost: a 7-day guest pass from a subscriber, a free year for verified US K-12 teachers, 6 months of Max 20x for open-source maintainers, a school plan through your university email, and free Team seats for research principal investigators. Pro itself costs $20/mo billed monthly, or $17/mo billed yearly, verified October 2026.
Several third-party guides describe a trial that Anthropic does not list. This guide is narrower and checkable: five programs that exist on Anthropic's own pages today, with who qualifies, how long each lasts and what happens when it ends. If none fits, the last sections cover the free plan and the cheapest honest way to pay.
The five legitimate free routes, at a glance
| Route | Who qualifies | What you get | Free for | Redeem by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Guest pass | Anyone new to Claude paid plans, invited by a Pro or Max subscriber | Pro plan with Claude Code, Cowork and Claude Design | 7 days | While the sender's passes last |
| Claude for Teachers | Verified US K-12 educators | Pro-level features with Claude Code and Cowork | 1 year | Sign up by June 30, 2027 |
| Claude for Open Source | Open-source maintainers and contributors who meet a threshold | Claude Max 20x | 6 months | No deadline shown |
| University plan | Students and staff at a school that licenses Claude | School plan with higher usage limits | While the school keeps the plan | Sign in with your school email |
| Team plan for scientists | Principal investigators at accredited universities and nonprofit research institutes | Team Standard seats, 1 to 25 per group | 12 months | Reviewed in 5 to 7 business days |
Each row comes from an Anthropic page read on October 10, 2026, and each section below links its source. Only the guest pass depends on neither your job nor your school, and it still needs a current subscriber to send you one.
What does Claude Pro cost, and what does the free plan leave out?
Claude Pro costs $20 per month billed monthly, or $17 per month when you pay $200 up front for the year, according to Anthropic's pricing page. Over twelve months that is $240 on the monthly plan against the annual price, so paying yearly already saves $40 before any free route applies.
The free plan is better than most people expect: web chat on desktop and mobile, web search, file creation, code execution, memory, artifacts and Claude Design, Slides and Docs. Pro adds the pieces that heavy users miss:
| Feature | Free | Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $0 | $20/mo, or $17/mo billed yearly |
| Usage per 5-hour session | Baseline | At least 5x more |
| Claude Code | No | Yes |
| Research | No | Yes |
| Projects | Up to 5 | Yes |
| Opus models | No | Yes |
| Fable models | No | Pay-as-you-go usage credits |
The Fable row matters for budgeting. Anthropic's model availability article says Fable models sit outside Pro's usage limits and run on pay-as-you-go usage credits. A free Pro plan does not make every model free.
Method 1: borrow a 7-day guest pass
A guest pass is a seven-day Pro trial that a current subscriber sends you. Per Anthropic's guest pass help article, eligible Pro and Max subscribers get a limited number of passes, and each one gives the recipient seven days of Pro, including Claude Code, Cowork and Claude Design. Senders find their passes with the /passes command in Claude Code or in their settings.
Verdict: The fastest route to start. It is a trial, not a free plan, and you need a subscriber who still has passes to send.
Watch out: You must be new to Claude paid plans and enter a payment method at signup. Anthropic says you are not charged unless you keep using Claude after the seven days, so set a reminder before day seven. Passes may expire or be withdrawn, so a sender can run out when you ask.
Method 2: US K-12 teachers get a full free year
Anthropic launched Claude for Teachers on July 14, 2026. Verified US K-12 educators, including classroom teachers, instructional coaches, specialists, interventionists, librarians, counselors and other certificated staff, get Pro-level features with Claude Code and Cowork at no cost. You verify with a school email, starting from Anthropic's teachers page, and anyone who signs up by June 30, 2027 gets a full year of free access, per the Claude for Teachers terms page.
Schools and districts can enroll too. On August 28, 2026 Anthropic made Claude for Teachers available to US K-12 schools and districts as a free Enterprise offering, with single sign-on and role-based access controls.
Verdict: The strongest offer on this page for anyone it covers. A full year is worth $200 to $240 at Pro's list price, depending on whether you would have paid monthly or yearly (our arithmetic).
Watch out: It is US K-12 only, so university lecturers and teachers outside the US are not covered. Anthropic's pages do not say what happens when the year ends, so diarize the date and check before you rely on a second year.
Method 3: open-source maintainers get 6 months of Max 20x
The Claude for Open Source program gives eligible maintainers and contributors six months of Claude Max 20x. Max 20x costs $200 per month on the Max plan help page and carries 20 times Pro's usage per session, so six months is about $1,200 at list price (our arithmetic).
You qualify by meeting at least one threshold:
- Maintaining packages with 500 or more dependent repos, 100 or more dependent packages, or 200,000 or more combined monthly downloads.
- Being a core committer on a named foundation project such as CPython, Rust, Node.js, Apache, CNCF, Kubernetes, the Linux kernel, Django or Rails.
- Having 100 or more pull requests merged into repos you do not own in the last 12 months.
- Leading a project with 20 or more unique external contributors who merged pull requests in the last 12 months.
- Maintaining repos with an OpenSSF criticality score of 0.4 or higher.
Anthropic also says that if you maintain something the ecosystem quietly depends on, you should apply even when the numbers fall short.
Verdict: The richest free plan here for one person, with 20 times Pro's usage per session.
Watch out: Anthropic emails you before the six months end. If you already pay for a plan, it resumes at your prior plan and rate unless you cancel, so cancel first if you do not want that. Otherwise the account returns to Free.
Method 4: use your university email
Some universities buy Claude for everyone on campus. Anthropic's help article for students says to sign in at claude.ai with your university email. A school plan adds an enhanced context window, the newest models, Projects, higher usage limits and priority access during busy periods. If you already have a personal account, you can choose between it and the school account at login, but data does not migrate, so export your old chats first.
Anthropic's April 2, 2025 announcement named Northeastern University, the London School of Economics and Political Science and Champlain College as campus-wide access partners. Your school's IT or library page is the place to check whether yours has signed.
Verdict: Free to you if your school has signed, and you sign in with your school email. Anthropic's pricing page describes the Education plan as institution-wide at discounted rates, with no individual student price.
Watch out: If your school email does not open a school account, ask your university's IT team before you pay for a personal plan. Students who miss out can compare how to get Gemini Pro for free and how to get ChatGPT Plus for free.
Method 5: research labs get free Team seats
Anthropic's Team plan for scientists gives principal investigators at accredited universities and nonprofit research institutes free Standard seats for 12 months. Eligible fields include the natural sciences, mathematics, computer science, engineering and related areas. Premium seats are $15 per user per month, against a regular $100. A group can have 1 to 25 seats, and the PI can add the research team to it.
At the regular Standard price of $20 per month, one free seat is worth $240 over the year, and a full 25-seat group about $6,000 (our arithmetic). Most applications are reviewed within five to seven business days.
Verdict: A good fit for a lab that wants Claude Code, Cowork and Claude Science for the whole group. It is a team setup with central billing and single sign-on, not a personal Pro account.
Watch out: For-profit companies, contract research organizations and industry R&D teams are excluded, and seats renew at the then-current price after 12 months. Groups with no activity for 90 days may be moved to standard Team pricing, per the program page.
Offers that look free but are not, or are not available now
Several programs show up in search results and fail the "free Claude Pro" test:
- Nonprofit pricing: Claude Team for registered 501(c)(3) organizations is $8 per user per month, or $3 in low- and middle-income countries, per Anthropic's nonprofits page. That is a discount, not free.
- Claude for Startups: The free year of Claude Team and the $1,000 in API credits are over capacity, according to the program's own FAQ. Applications still open, but do not plan around those two offers.
- Gift subscriptions: Anthropic says gift subscriptions are currently unavailable to purchase. A gift you already hold redeems at claude.ai/gift/redeem and expires 365 days after its purchase date.
- The Claude 4 invite contest: It ran May 27 to June 4. Max 5x winners got four months of Max free, and Max 20x winners got $100 off for four months, per its rules page. The window has closed.
- Campus Ambassadors: The program pays a $3,600 stipend, is closed for Fall 2026, and its page mentions no Pro access.
What does not work
A few things get advertised that Anthropic does not offer:
- "Claude Pro promo codes." Anthropic lists none on its pricing page, so a site selling one is selling something Anthropic does not publish.
- Shared or resold logins. A reseller can lose the account at any time, and you hand a stranger your chats and files.
- "Complete this survey to get Pro." Offer walls collect your data and do not deliver a subscription.
- API credits as a route to Pro. Anthropic's Pro plan article says the Pro plan does not include API usage through the Claude Console, so API access is not a way to get Pro.
- A "30-day free trial." Some third-party guides promise one, but Anthropic's pricing page lists no Pro trial. The seven-day guest pass is the trial Anthropic's help center describes.
If none of these apply to you
Use the free plan until a specific limit blocks you, then pay yearly, which brings Pro to $17 a month. Claude Code, Research and Opus models are missing from the free plan. Methodology
Every offer above was read on Anthropic's own pages on October 10, 2026: claude.com/pricing for plan prices and features, the support center for guest passes, university access, and the Pro and Max plans, and Anthropic's program pages for teachers, open source, scientists, nonprofits and startups. Totals such as $240 a year, $1,200 and $6,000 are our arithmetic from those list prices. The Toolradar counts come from its pages on the same day. Anthropic can change or end any program, so check the linked page before you apply.
FAQ
Is there a real way to get Claude Pro for free?
Yes. As of October 2026, Anthropic runs five official routes: a 7-day guest pass from a Pro or Max subscriber, a free year of Claude for Teachers for verified US K-12 educators, 6 months of Max 20x for eligible open-source maintainers, a school-funded plan through a university email, and 12 months of free Team Standard seats for research principal investigators.
Is Claude Pro free for students?
Not on its own. Anthropic's pricing page lists no student discount or promo code for Pro, and its Education plan is sold to institutions at discounted rates. A student gets Claude Pro-level access free only if their school has signed up, which you check by signing in at claude.ai with your university email.
Does Claude have a free trial?
The pricing page lists no Pro trial. The closest thing is the 7-day guest pass: a Pro or Max subscriber sends you a pass, you get seven days of Pro, and you are charged only if you keep using Claude after the week. You must be new to Claude paid plans and enter a payment method.
How much does Claude Pro cost per year?
Claude Pro is $20 a month on monthly billing, or $240 over 12 months. Billed annually it is $200 a year, which Anthropic shows as $17 a month. Max starts at $100 a month for the 5x tier and $200 for the 20x tier, with monthly billing only, as of October 2026.
What do you lose on the free Claude plan?
The free plan has no Claude Code, no Research, no Opus models and no Fable models, and it caps Projects at five. Pro gives at least five times more usage per session. Web search, memory, artifacts and file creation are on both plans.
Can open-source maintainers get Claude free?
Yes. Claude for Open Source gives six months of Claude Max 20x, worth about $1,200 at list price, to maintainers and contributors who meet a threshold such as 200,000 combined monthly downloads or 100 merged pull requests into repos they do not own in the last year. When it ends, a prior paid plan resumes or the account returns to Free.
What happens when a free Claude offer ends?
It depends on the route. Guest passes charge the card on file only if you keep using Claude after seven days. The open-source program returns you to your earlier paid plan at its prior rate, or to Free, and scientists' seats renew at the then-current price after 12 months. Anthropic's Claude for Teachers page does not say what follows the free year.
