What each one is
DaVinci Resolve is Blackmagic Design's editor. Its product page lists Mac, Windows and Linux, and describes a free download that handles virtually all 8-bit formats at up to 60fps. Studio adds the DaVinci AI Neural Engine, temporal and AI spatial noise reduction, text-based editing, magic mask, and 10-bit video up to 120fps at resolutions beyond 4K. If your footage is 8-bit and Ultra HD or below, the free download covers the editing itself. Studio is where the AI tools and the higher bit depth sit.
Premiere Pro is Adobe's editor, sold on subscription plans. Adobe's own product page describes Text-Based Editing, which lets you refine, reorder and trim clips the way you would edit a text document. It also names Generative Extend, which lengthens clips, adds frames and generates missing ambient sound. Several of the other listed features target dialogue-heavy footage: automatic transcription on import, captions in 18 languages and Enhance Speech. Object Mask is aimed at rotoscoping. Adobe's FAQ lists a seven-day free trial.
Pricing, checked October 10, 2026
DaVinci Resolve (blackmagicdesign.com, US dollars):
- Free: $0 as a download. The page says the free version works with virtually all 8-bit formats at up to 60fps and reaches Ultra HD (3840 x 2160). It states no GPU limit. For a creator working inside those limits, the free version is the whole price.
- Studio: $295 on the "Buy Online Now" button. The product page does not say whether that is a one-time payment or a subscription, so we claim neither.
Premiere Pro (adobe.com, US dollars):
- Single app: US$22.99/mo on the label "Annual, billed monthly." Adobe's FAQ adds "First year only. New subscribers only." The page shows no price after year one and no monthly plan without an annual commitment.
- Free trial: seven days, per Adobe's FAQ.
- Creative Cloud Pro, which includes Premiere: regularly US$69.99/mo, or US$34.99/mo for the first three months for new subscribers.
What a year costs
Take a solo editor who wants one tool for twelve months:
- DaVinci Resolve free: $0.
- DaVinci Resolve Studio: $295.
- Premiere Pro, single app at the first-year rate: $22.99 x 12 = $275.88.
Premiere's first year comes to $19.12 less than Studio, a small gap that covers only one year. Adobe's US page does not show the price after year one, so a two-year total would be a guess. If you plan to edit for longer than a year, the year-two Premiere price decides the comparison, and that is the figure to check on Adobe's page before you sign up.
Where each one wins
| Dimension | Winner | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Entry price | DaVinci Resolve | Free download at $0; the Adobe page we checked shows a paid plan and a seven-day trial |
| Free-tier limits | DaVinci Resolve | Free runs up to Ultra HD and 60fps; the Adobe page we checked lists a seven-day trial and no free plan |
| Top specs | DaVinci Resolve Studio | Studio adds 10-bit up to 120fps and resolutions beyond 4K; Adobe's page publishes no resolution ceiling |
| Text-based editing | Premiere Pro | On Adobe's Premiere page; Blackmagic lists it only in Studio |
| Generative clip extension | Premiere Pro | Generative Extend has no named equivalent on Blackmagic's page |
| Adobe workflow | Premiere Pro | Premiere ships inside Creative Cloud Pro, for people who already use Adobe apps |
| User rating | DaVinci Resolve | 4.8 out of 5 against 4.6, though Premiere has far more reviews (2,251 vs 494) |
| Desktop platforms | DaVinci Resolve | Blackmagic names Mac, Windows and Linux; the Adobe page we checked names no desktop OS |
Resolve takes five of these rows and Premiere takes three. Resolve wins on cost, published specs, rating and desktop platforms. Premiere wins on features and the Adobe ecosystem. Which set matters more depends on what you need to do with the clips.
Strengths and weaknesses
DaVinci Resolve
- The free download costs nothing and covers editing up to Ultra HD at 60fps, with no monthly bill. The catch: text-based editing and the AI noise reduction are Studio features, so the free version leaves out both.
- Studio has one stated price. The catch: Blackmagic's page does not say what kind of payment that is, so check the license terms before you pay.
Premiere Pro
- The product page groups text-based editing, Generative Extend, Object Mask, automatic transcription and captions in one place, and a seven-day trial lets you try the editor first. The catch: the first-year rate applies to new subscribers only, and the year-two price is not on the page we checked.
- Premiere ships inside Creative Cloud Pro, which lists at US$69.99/mo regularly. The catch: if you do not need the other Adobe apps, the bundle is the expensive route, and the single app is the cheaper one.
Who should pick what
Pick DaVinci Resolve (free) if your footage is 8-bit at Ultra HD or below, you want to pay nothing to start, or you edit on Linux. Blackmagic lists Linux. Check Adobe's system requirements for your machine before you commit to Premiere. For a YouTube workflow built around editing, see how to make AI YouTube videos.
Pick DaVinci Resolve Studio if you need 10-bit footage, resolutions above 4K, or the AI tools Studio lists, and its listed price works for you. Check the license terms first, since Blackmagic's page does not say whether that price is one-time or recurring.
Pick Premiere Pro if you already pay for Adobe apps, you want text-based editing and Generative Extend in the same tool, or you want to try a seven-day trial before paying. Check the price at checkout, because the first-year rate applies to new subscribers only.
How we compared
We compared both vendors' own US pricing and product pages, checked on October 10, 2026, with Toolradar's public G2 and Capterra totals, checked September 17, 2026. Dupple has no test lab, so this page does not say how either editor performs on your footage. Where a vendor page leaves out a fact, we say so instead of filling the gap.
What we could not confirm
- Premiere's price after year one. The US page shows the first-year rate and no later price, so we cannot give a two-year cost.
- Studio's payment type. Blackmagic's page shows a buy button and does not say whether the price is one-time or recurring.
- Premiere's desktop operating systems. The Adobe page we checked does not name them.
- Premiere's resolution and bit-depth ceiling. The page does not publish one, so the specs row rests on what Blackmagic publishes.
FAQ
Is DaVinci Resolve free?
Yes. Blackmagic offers a free download. Its page says the free version works with virtually all 8-bit formats at up to 60fps and reaches Ultra HD (3840 x 2160). The paid version, Studio, adds 10-bit video up to 120fps and resolutions beyond 4K.
How much does Premiere Pro cost?
On Adobe's US page, the single-app plan is listed as a monthly rate on an annual plan billed monthly. Adobe labels that rate first year only for new subscribers, and it lists a seven-day free trial. The page does not show the price after the first year.
Is DaVinci Resolve better than Premiere Pro?
Neither wins everywhere. Resolve is better on price if you stay free, and on the specs Blackmagic publishes. Premiere is better if you need text-based editing and Generative Extend, or if you already pay for Adobe apps.
Does DaVinci Resolve have text-based editing?
Only in Studio. Blackmagic lists text-based editing among the features Studio adds over the free download. Adobe lists Text-Based Editing on its Premiere page.
Which costs less for one year?
DaVinci Resolve's free download costs $0, and Studio costs $295. Premiere's first-year rate works out to $275.88 over twelve monthly payments, which is $19.12 less than Studio, if the first-year offer applies to you.
Which one runs on Linux?
DaVinci Resolve. Blackmagic lists Linux alongside Mac and Windows on its product page. The Adobe page we checked names no desktop operating system, so check Adobe's system requirements before you decide.
Bottom line
Start with DaVinci Resolve's free download. It costs nothing, and you can check its free limits against your own footage before you pay. Choose Premiere Pro if you already pay for Adobe apps or need text-based editing and Generative Extend now, and treat the first-year rate as a one-year number, not a permanent one. Check both US pricing pages on the day you buy, since either vendor can change a plan.
