Updated November 3, 2026: prices re-checked on each vendor's US store or pricing page. Compared from vendor specs and pricing pages, not tested hands-on.
As of November 2026, Tangem Wallet has the lowest price of the three cards on this page: $69.90 for a 3-card set, with no seed phrase needed by default. Trezor Safe 5 costs $129 and adds a color touchscreen and an open-source design. Ledger Nano Gen5 costs $179 and includes a Recovery Key, but Ledger's optional Recover subscription adds a recurring cost.

"Trezor vs Ledger" is the largest search in this group, at about 1,100 US searches a month in our keyword data, with "ledger vs trezor" and the Tangem pairs far behind. The buyer is usually choosing one cold wallet to hold bitcoin and other coins. This page answers four questions in order: what each one costs, how the backup works if the device is lost, what the device shows before you sign, and what you pay over time. It compares products and vendor claims only. It does not say which coins to buy or where prices are going.
For the Tangem Wallet on its own, see our Tangem Wallet review. Here the three brands sit side by side.
The three cards at a glance
Each brand has one card below: Trezor's and Ledger's current touchscreen model, and Tangem's 3-card set, which Tangem labels "Safer". The other models are priced further down. The order follows the methodology: the US price of each card first, lowest first, then how much of the backup depends on writing words down, then the screen.
| Product | Price (Nov 3, 2026) | Security chip | Backup | Screen and connection | Subscription |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tangem Wallet, 3-card set | $69.90 (2-card set $59.90) | EAL6+ certified chip, developed with Samsung Semiconductors | Three cards hold the same wallet; seed phrase optional | No screen; powered by the phone | None; network fees only |
| Trezor Safe 5 | $129 | NDA-free EAL6+ Secure Element | Two 20-word backup cards in the box; multi-share option | 1.54 in color touchscreen; USB-C | None shown on the page |
| Ledger Nano Gen5 | $179 | CC EAL6+ certified (ST33K1M5) | Secret Recovery Phrase, plus a Recovery Key (included) | E Ink touchscreen; Bluetooth and NFC; USB-C | None needed; Ledger Recover is optional |
The ranking, card by card
1. Tangem Wallet: the lowest price of the three cards, with no seed phrase to write down

$69.90 for the 3-card set, read on Tangem's US pricing page on November 3, 2026. The 2-card set is $59.90. Tangem's free standard shipping applies to orders above $89, so one set pays shipping at checkout.
Tangem's homepage says the chip is EAL6+ certified and was developed with Samsung Semiconductors. Backups replace the 12-word recovery seed, and the wallet is powered by your phone, with no batteries and no cables. The homepage counts 14,100+ tokens across more than 90 networks. Tangem's pricing page says the app is free and that the only ongoing cost is blockchain network fees.
- No seed phrase by default: the cards are the backup, and a seed phrase stays optional for advanced users.
- No subscription: the pricing page lists none, and the app is free.
- Independent audits: the security page lists reviews by Cure53, Riscure and Kudelski Security.
- The card has no screen. You check each transaction in the Tangem app on your phone.
- The 2-card set saves $10 but leaves no spare. Tangem's own FAQ says that with two cards, losing one and forgetting your access code leaves you unable to recover the wallet.
- Tangem says its app code is on GitHub. Its security page describes immutable firmware principles for the card and does not call the card firmware open source.
Best for: buyers who want a cheap start with no seed phrase to write down, and who are happy to check each send on the phone.

2. Trezor Safe 5: a color touchscreen and an open-source design for $129

$129 in Black Graphite on Trezor's US store, read on November 3, 2026. The Safe 5 page lists a 1.54-inch color touchscreen with haptic feedback, a microSD slot and USB-C. It states an NDA-free EAL6+ Secure Element and calls its security and design open source. Trezor's page offers an advanced multi-share backup as well as the standard backup.
- You confirm each transaction on the device's own touchscreen, with haptic feedback.
- It costs $50 less than the Ledger Nano Gen5, and $59.10 more than the Tangem 3-card set.
- Its security and design are described as open source, and it offers a multi-share backup option.
- The Safe 5 page says that on iOS, the device cannot swap, send, set up or manage through the connection it lists. Check this before buying for an iPhone.
- The backup is paper: the box holds two 20-word backup cards, so you write 20 words down.
- There is no Bluetooth on the spec list, so the phone link is by USB-C only.
Best for: buyers who want a screen on the device and an open-source design, and who will write down 20 words.

3. Ledger Nano Gen5: Bluetooth and a Recovery Key for $179

$179 in Jet Black on Ledger's store, priced in US dollars, read on November 3, 2026. The Gen5 has a 300 x 400 px E Ink touchscreen, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC for the Recovery Key and the Security Key, and USB-C. Its secure element is CC EAL6+ certified (ST33K1M5). - The Recovery Key is included. It is a PIN-protected smart card that you tap to restore access, and it sits next to the Secret Recovery Phrase.
- Bluetooth and NFC pairing with a phone. Of the three cards on this page, only the Gen5 lists Bluetooth.
- An E Ink touchscreen shows the transaction details before you sign.
- It is the most expensive of the three cards: $109.10 more than the Tangem 3-card set and $50 more than the Trezor Safe 5.
- Ledger Recover is a paid subscription. Its page says it splits a copy of the key across Coincover, Ledger and EscrowTech, needs identity verification, and that monthly renewals are processed in euros.
- Ledger's spec list counts 500+ coins in its own Ledger Wallet app. Thousands more need a third-party wallet.
Best for: buyers who want Bluetooth pairing and a tap-to-restore card, and who accept a higher price and an optional subscription.

Which is cheapest after 12 and 24 months?
Dupple data: computed from vendor prices on Nov 3, 2026. Neither Tangem's pricing page nor Trezor's Safe 5 page lists a recurring fee. The one subscription in this group is Ledger Recover, an optional recovery service that Ledger sells in bundles: one year with the Gen5, Stax or Flex, and six months with the Nano S Plus or Nano X. The table models a buyer who adds Recover to the Gen5. The Gen5 alone is $179, and Ledger's Gen5 bundle with a year of Recover is $278.99. Ledger prints a 1-year Recover code at $99.99, list $119.88 (recovery solutions page, read Nov 3, 2026). Ledger bills renewals monthly in euros, so the table assumes a second 1-year code at $99.99.
| Setup | 12 months | 24 months | What recurs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tangem Wallet, 3-card set | $69.90 | $69.90 | Nothing from Tangem; network fees on each send |
| Trezor Safe 5 | $129.00 | $129.00 | Nothing on the page |
| Ledger Nano Gen5, device only | $179.00 | $179.00 | Nothing |
| Ledger Nano Gen5 with Ledger Recover | $278.99 | $378.98 | Recover: second 1-year code at $99.99 (list $119.88: $398.87) |
The arithmetic, once: $179 for the Gen5, plus $99.99 for the first 1-year code, is $278.99; a second 1-year code at $99.99 brings the total to $378.98 over 24 months. If the second code is bought at the $119.88 list price, the total is $398.87. Over the same period Tangem stays at $69.90 and Trezor at $129. The device price is the smaller part of the Ledger bill once Recover is added.

FAQ
Which of the three is cheapest?
Among the three cards, the Tangem Wallet 3-card set is lowest at $69.90, against $129 for the Trezor Safe 5 and $179 for the Ledger Nano Gen5, read November 3, 2026. In the full price table, the Trezor Safe 3 at $59 and the Ledger Nano S Plus at $69 cost less, but both have small monochrome OLED screens and no touchscreen.
Does Tangem need a seed phrase?
No, not by default. Tangem says its backups replace the 12-word recovery seed, and a seed phrase is optional for advanced users. The 3-card set gives a third card. Tangem's FAQ says that with only two cards, losing one and forgetting your access code leaves you unable to recover the wallet.
Does Ledger Recover cost extra?
Yes. It is an optional subscription. Ledger's page says it encrypts a pre-BIP39 version of the private key and splits it into three fragments, held by Coincover, Ledger and EscrowTech, and that it needs identity verification. Ledger sells it in device bundles: one year with the Gen5, Stax or Flex, and six months with the Nano S Plus or Nano X, and as a standalone 1-year code at $99.99, list $119.88.
Which one supports the most coins?
The vendors count differently, so the numbers are not comparable. Tangem lists 14,100+ tokens across more than 90 networks. Trezor says it manages thousands of coins and tokens. Ledger's spec sheets list 500+ coins in its own Ledger Wallet app, and thousands more through third-party wallets.
Is the firmware open source?
Trezor says its security and design are open source, and the Safe 5 page says so directly. Tangem says its app code is on GitHub. Its security page describes immutable firmware principles for the card and does not call the card firmware open source. The Ledger spec sheets for these models do not describe the firmware as open source.
Do any of these charge a monthly fee?
Not for the Tangem Wallet, which Tangem says has no subscription: the app is free, and the only ongoing cost is blockchain network fees. The Trezor Safe 5 page lists no subscription. Among these vendors' pages, Ledger Recover is the only recurring charge.
Which one is more secure?
This page does not rank security. Each vendor states a certified secure element on its own pages, and the claims are theirs. Choose on the backup and the screen you need, then read each vendor's security page before you buy.
Methodology
What we compared: three cards, one per brand (Tangem Wallet 3-card set, Trezor Safe 5 and Ledger Nano Gen5), plus the other models in the full price table. Prices were read on November 3, 2026, on each vendor's store or pricing page, in US dollars. Specs come from each vendor's product or spec pages. Security claims are cited to the vendor's own pages, not to reviews.
Ranking criteria, in order: (1) the US price of the one model chosen per brand, lowest first. The choice decides the order: Trezor Safe 3 ($59) and Ledger Nano S Plus ($69) cost less than the Tangem set. (2) and (3) are tie-breakers and did not change the order: (2) how much of the backup depends on writing words down, which Tangem does not need by default; (3) a screen on the device, which Trezor and Ledger have and Tangem does not. Affiliate status did not decide any position. Only the Tangem links are affiliate links.
$99.99 a year is Ledger's 1-year code price, read Nov 3, 2026. None of these devices was tested hands-on for this page. The prices will be read again at each refresh.
