How the eight were chosen and ranked

We read 37 XP-PEN drawing product pages, 34 Huion products and the 21 products on Wacom's US tablet and screen category pages. A model qualified only if it was orderable on the brand's US store on November 6, 2026, was sold for drawing on a Mac or PC, and was a current model.

The ranking rule: two classes, sorted from the lowest ranking price up. The ranking price is the price the product page shows on the read date, sale or not, with the struck price and any countdown printed beside it. XP-PEN's sales run on a countdown that has moved forward each time it ended: to November 4, then November 5, and now 07:00 UTC on November 7, 2026. Huion prints no end date, and Wacom has no sale. A Huion model ranks on its lowest orderable variant.

The brand gate: at most two picks per brand within each class. Further qualifying models go to the "Also worth a look" box with their price. The tie-break: the larger active area goes first, then more pressure levels. The Inspiroy H580X (203.2 x 127 mm) beats the Inspiroy 2 S (160 x 100 mm) at $44.99.

Pen tablets, ranked

Pen tablets have no screen, so your hand and your eyes work in two places. The four below all rank under $45.

1. XP-PEN Star G430S: the lowest ranking price in the list

XP-PEN Star G430S pen tablet in black with its pen, product photo from XP-PEN.
Image: XP-PEN

$17.99, with $29.99 struck on XP-PEN's US store, read November 6, 2026. A countdown on the page runs to 07:00 UTC on November 7, 2026, and the ranking uses the $17.99 the page shows. The page lists the model in stock.

The page calls it a tablet for OSU! gameplay, drawing, painting, sketching and e-signatures. It lists a 4 x 3 inch working area, 8,192 pressure levels and a battery-free stylus, with Windows 7 or later and Mac OS X 10.10 or later.

Pros: the lowest ranking price here, and 8,192 pressure levels on a battery-free pen.

Cons: the smallest working area of the four tablets, the page title leads with OSU! gameplay, and the price rests on a countdown sale.

Best for: small sketches and notes on a tight budget.

2. XP-PEN Deco Fun XS: a 4.8 x 3 inch area for $23.99

Image: XP-PEN

$23.99, with $29.99 struck on XP-PEN's US store, read November 6, 2026, in Classic Black, the only colour with units listed. The same countdown runs to 07:00 UTC on November 7, 2026.

XP-PEN's page title reads "Drawing Tablet for Kids", but its product copy says it is "Designed for osu game, digital drawing, painting, E-signatures, online teaching, remote work, photo editing", so it is ranked with the other tablets. It lists a 4.8 x 3 inch active area, 8,192 pressure levels, a battery-free P01 pen and 5080 LPI, with Windows 7, Mac OS X 10.10, Android 6.0 and Chrome OS 88 or later. The box holds ten nibs.

Pros: a larger area than the Star G430S for $6 more, Android and Chrome OS support, and ten spare nibs.

Cons: no tilt on the XS size, which the larger Deco Fun sizes add, and only one colour in stock.

Best for: a student or a shared family computer, including a Chromebook.

3. Wacom Intuos S (CTL-4100): a bundled app and a battery-free pen

Image: Wacom

$39.95 on Wacom's US store, read November 6, 2026. The store prints no sale on this model. The price is for the USB model.

The pen has 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity and no battery, and three spare standard nibs inside the pen. Registration adds Clip Studio Paint Pro for two years, which Wacom values at $239.75.

Pros: the only pick with no sale price to expire, a bundled app, and a battery-free pen.

Cons: 4,096 levels is half the 8,192 of the Star G430S, Deco Fun XS and Inspiroy H580X. Wacom's spec page gives the Small active area as 152.0 x 95.0 mm (about 6.0 x 3.7 in), larger than the Deco Fun XS's 4.8 x 3 inches.

Best for: a laptop user who wants Wacom's brand and bundled software.

4. Huion Inspiroy H580X: 8,192 levels on the largest area of the four tablets

Image: Huion

$44.99, with $49.99 struck on Huion's US store, read November 6, 2026. A "Same Black Friday Price" banner carries no end date. Its stock field reads 33 units.

The page gives a 203.2 x 127 mm (8 x 5 inch) working area in PC mode, 8,192 levels on the battery-free PW100 pen, and eight nibs in the box. It describes "a natural pen-on-paper drawing experience" and says it is "suitable for beginners to learn drawing and design". It lists Windows 7 or later and Mac OS 10.12 or later.

Pros: the largest working area of the four tablets, at the same price as the Inspiroy 2 S in the box.

Cons: the page title pitches it for online teaching, and the $44.99 has no end date, so it may move without notice.

Best for: a beginner who wants the biggest tablet area of the four.

5. Huion Kamvas 12: 120% sRGB on a 1080p IPS screen

$159.00, with $239.00 struck on Huion's US store, read November 6, 2026. The "Same Black Friday Price" banner has no end date. The only option is With Stand, with 23 units listed.

The screen is 1920 x 1080 IPS with 120% sRGB gamut. The pen has 8,192 pressure levels and 5080 LPI.

Pros: the lowest price among the screens, and a stand in the listing.

Cons: the banner has no end date. If the price returns to $239.00, the Kamvas 12 drops out of the four display slots.

Best for: an artist who wants an IPS screen with a stand included.

6. XP-PEN Artist 12: 72% NTSC (100% sRGB) on a 1080p screen

XP-PEN Artist 12 pen display with its pen and pen holder, product photo from XP-PEN.
Image: XP-PEN

$159.99, with $199.99 struck on XP-PEN's US store, read November 6, 2026, on the countdown that runs to 07:00 UTC on November 7, 2026. It ranks 99 cents behind the Kamvas 12.

The page lists an 11.6-inch 1920 x 1080 screen, 8,192 pressure levels, six shortcut keys and a touch bar. It gives the colour as "72% NTSC (100%SRGB)". The AC18 stand is an add-on at +$35.99 beside a $49.99 struck figure.

Pros: a touch bar for shortcuts, and a stand that XP-PEN sells as an add-on.

Cons: 72% NTSC is a different measure from the sRGB figures on the Kamvas screens, so the numbers do not compare directly.

Best for: a first screen for a beginner who does not need a wide colour gamut.

7. XP-PEN Artist 12 (2nd Gen): 127% sRGB on a laminated screen

Image: XP-PEN

$174.99, with $249.99 struck on XP-PEN's US store, read November 6, 2026, in Black, on the same countdown to 07:00 UTC on November 7, 2026. The green colour lists zero units.

The page lists an 11.9-inch fully laminated 1920 x 1080 screen with "90% NTSC, 127% sRGB, 94% Adobe RGB", an X3 Elite pen with 8,192 pressure levels and 60° tilt, 8 shortcut keys and a full-featured USB-C port. The AC18 stand is an add-on at +$35.99.

Pros: the widest sRGB figure among the four screens, full lamination and pen tilt.

Cons: the stand costs extra, so the desk setup comes to $210.98, and the sale price rests on the countdown.

Best for: an artist who wants a laminated screen with tilt for under $180.

Pros: the same 120% sRGB figure as the Kamvas 12 on a 13.3-inch screen, against 11.6 inches.

Cons: the stand costs extra, and the lowest listed price with a stand is $189.99. The black and purple colours list fewer than five units each without the stand.

How to choose

Under $45 with a computer you own: pick a tablet from rows 1 to 4.

You want to see the drawing on the pen: pick a display from rows 5 to 8, and budget for a stand, which adds $35.99 on the XP-PEN Artist pages.

You need the highest pressure figure: seven of the eight picks list 8,192 levels and the Intuos S lists 4,096; the Deco 640 in the box lists 16,384.

You want wide colour: the Artist 12 (2nd Gen) lists 127% sRGB, the widest among the picks, and the Kamvas 12 and Kamvas 13 list 120% sRGB.

You want no sale risk: the Wacom Intuos S has no sale, so its $39.95 is the number to budget. XP-PEN's sale prices run on a countdown, and Huion's have no printed end date.

A portable monitor takes no pen input, so it suits reference images more than drawing. Our portable monitor guide compares those screens. If the drawing computer also runs AI tools, the mini PC guide covers the machine side.

FAQ

Which drawing tablet should a beginner buy in 2026?

The XP-PEN Star G430S has the lowest price among the four tablets: $17.99 with $29.99 struck, on a countdown to 07:00 UTC on November 7, 2026. Its 4 x 3 inch area is small: the Deco Fun XS gives 4.8 x 3 inches for $23.99, and the Huion Inspiroy H580X gives 8 x 5 inches for $44.99.

Is the Deco Fun XS only for kids?

No. XP-PEN's page title says "for Kids", but its product copy lists osu, digital drawing, painting, e-signatures, online teaching, remote work and photo editing, and it runs on Windows, macOS, Android and Chrome OS.

Is there a drawing tablet with a screen under $200?

Yes. All four displays are under $180 on November 6, 2026: the Huion Kamvas 12 ($159.00) and Kamvas 13 ($179.00 without stand) with no end date printed, and the XP-PEN Artist 12 ($159.99) and Artist 12 (2nd Gen) ($174.99) on a countdown to November 7.

Do I need a pen display or a pen tablet?

A pen tablet is cheaper and needs you to watch the computer screen while you draw. A pen display lets you draw on the image itself, and every screen here costs more than every tablet.

Do any of these need a subscription?

No. None of the eight product pages we read lists a subscription for the hardware.

Does a pen display need a stand?

Not to work, but a stand changes the angle. The XP-PEN Artist 12 and Artist 12 (2nd Gen) stands are add-ons at $35.99. The Kamvas 12 lists its stand as part of the model, and the Kamvas 13 stand is optional, with a lowest listed price of $189.99 with it.

Can I replace the pen nibs?

Yes. XP-PEN's and Huion's nib packs cost $9.99. The Intuos S pen holds three spare nibs, the Deco Fun XS box lists ten and the Inspiroy H580X box lists eight. Check the nib model against your pen first.

Methodology

We read each XP-PEN price on its US product page on November 6, 2026, from 11:08 to 11:12 Paris time, Huion's from its US store's product data at 11:13, and Wacom's from its US store's tablet and screen pages at about 11:15. We did not read the carts, so the ranking price is the product page price. Battery, weight, pressure and colour figures are the vendor's claims, not our measurements.

The gates are: orderable on the read date, sold for drawing on a Mac or PC, a current model, and at most two picks per brand within each class. The ranking price is the price the product page shows on the read date, with the struck price and any countdown printed beside it. A Huion model ranks on its lowest orderable variant. Ties go to the larger active area, then more pressure levels. No paid placement or affiliate link changes an order, and we applied no promo code.
