GitHub Copilot vs Cursor 2026: Price, Plans and Which to Pick

Short answer: GitHub Copilot wins for most developers. Copilot Pro costs $10/mo, keeps the editor you already use (VS Code, JetBrains, Visual Studio, Eclipse or Xcode) and includes a credit allowance for Claude, GPT and Gemini models. Cursor wins if you want an AI-first editor: Plus is $8/mo but runs Grok models only, and Premium is $30/mo. Verified on github.com and cursor.com, October 2026.
The old "$10 vs $20" framing is out of date. Cursor is now sold inside The X Subscription, a bundle with Grok and X, and its $20 Pro plan stays only for people who subscribed before. GitHub moved Copilot chat and agents onto a pool of AI credits. Both products now bill heavy agent work by usage, so the sticker price tells you less than it did a year ago.
Plans and prices side by side
| Plan tier | GitHub Copilot | Cursor | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0: 2,000 completions a month, limited chat and agent use | $0: limited agent and chat requests | Enough to try each tool, not to work all day |
| Entry paid | Pro, $10/mo | Plus, $8/mo ($80/yr) | Copilot: 1,500 AI credits. Cursor: base usage, Grok models only |
| Mid | Pro+, $39/mo | Premium, $30/mo ($300/yr) | Copilot: 7,000 credits. Cursor: 4x Plus usage, cloud agents, third-party models billed by usage |
| Heavy | Max, $100/mo | Super, $100/mo; Ultra, $200/mo | Copilot: 20,000 credits. Cursor: 15x or 50x Plus usage |
| Team | Business, $19 per seat/mo; Enterprise, $39 per seat/mo | Teams, $30, $100 or $200 per seat/mo | Admin controls, central billing, SSO on Cursor Teams |

What each subscription buys
GitHub Copilot: an assistant that lives in your editor
Copilot is an extension, not an editor. GitHub lists agent mode in VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains, Eclipse and Xcode, plus the Copilot CLI, the Copilot app and github.com, so a team on mixed IDEs can standardize on one plan without changing tools.
The credit model is the part to understand. One GitHub AI credit equals $0.01. Pro includes 1,000 base credits plus a 500-credit flex allotment, Pro+ 3,900 plus 3,100, and Max 10,000 plus 10,000. Chat, agent mode, code review and cloud agents draw on credits, and a frontier model on a long agent session burns them much faster than a quick question to a light model.
Code completions and next edit suggestions do not use credits and stay unlimited on every paid plan. If most of your AI use is autocomplete, Pro is close to a flat $10. When credits run out, you wait for the monthly reset, switch to a cheaper model, or set a dollar budget for extra usage.
Model choice is wide. GitHub's plans page lists Anthropic Claude, OpenAI GPT, Google Gemini and xAI Grok models on Pro, and Pro+ adds delegation to third-party coding agents such as Claude and OpenAI Codex (in preview).
Cursor: an AI editor inside The X Subscription
Cursor is its own editor, built around agents, tab completion and multi-file edits. New customers buy it through The X Subscription, which also includes Grok chat and X perks such as the Premium checkmark. You manage billing from grok.com, and Cursor's terms ask you to cancel at least 24 hours before renewal.
Plus is the catch in the lineup. At $8 it is the cheapest paid plan of either vendor, but it runs only Cursor's own models (Grok and Composer) at fixed settings, without Auto, cloud agents, automations, Bugbot code reviews or third-party models. A developer who wants Claude or GPT in Cursor needs Premium.
Premium adds those features and opens third-party models, but at API list price paid from prepaid credit, on top of the subscription. The monthly fee covers Cursor's own models, so a developer who lives in Claude pays the subscription and a usage bill every month.
Existing subscribers keep the legacy plans: Pro at $20, Pro+ at $60, Ultra at $200 and Teams Standard at $40 per user. Cursor says switching to The X Subscription is optional and permanent.
Round by round
Price for one developer: Copilot wins. Pro's credits cover third-party frontier models, while Cursor's cheapest plan with third-party models is Premium, and that usage is billed on top. Cursor Plus is cheaper only if Grok models are enough for you.
Editor choice: Copilot wins. It works inside the IDE you already use. Cursor asks you to move editors, which matters most on teams with JetBrains or Xcode users.
Agent-first workflow: Cursor wins. The editor is designed around agents, and Premium bundles cloud agents, automations, Bugbot reviews and code hosting through Origin in one place. Copilot has cloud agents and code review too, but spread across the IDE, CLI and github.com.
Model access: Copilot wins. Every Copilot paid plan includes Claude, GPT, Gemini and Grok models within its credits. Cursor includes its own Grok and Composer models and bills everything else separately.
Team cost: Copilot wins. Business at $19 a seat undercuts Cursor Teams at $30 a seat, and Business includes 1,900 credits per user.
Free tier: tie. Copilot Free prints a number (2,000 completions a month) and limits chat and agents; Cursor's pricing page describes its free agent and chat requests only as limited. Neither is built for full-time work.

What a year costs
All figures below are our arithmetic on the printed prices, before any extra usage.
| Setup | GitHub Copilot | Cursor |
|---|---|---|
| 1 developer, entry plan | Pro: $120/yr | Plus: $96/yr monthly, or $80 on the yearly plan |
| 1 developer, mid tier | Pro+: $468/yr | Premium: $360/yr monthly, or $300 on the yearly plan, plus third-party usage |
| Team of 10 | Business: $2,280/yr | Teams on Premium seats: $3,600/yr |
| Team of 10, top tier | Enterprise: $4,680/yr | Teams on Super seats: $12,000/yr |
The team gap is the clearest number on the page: ten Copilot Business seats cost $1,320 a year less than ten Cursor Premium seats (our arithmetic). Neither total includes overage. On Copilot, extra credits cost $0.01 each, so a $10 budget buys 1,000 more. On Cursor, third-party model use is billed at API list price.
Who should pick which
Pick Copilot Pro if you want Claude or GPT for chat and agents, use an IDE other than VS Code, or mostly need autocomplete. It is the cheapest paid plan from either vendor that includes Claude and GPT models.
Pick Copilot Business for a team. It costs less per seat than Cursor Teams and gives admins usage limits and budget controls.
Pick Cursor Plus if you want Cursor's editor on the smallest budget and Grok models cover your work. Pay yearly to bring it to $80.
Pick Cursor Premium if you want the AI-first editor with cloud agents and Bugbot, and you accept paying separately for Claude or GPT use. Compare it with Claude Code vs Cursor and Cursor vs Windsurf first.
Skip both paid tiers if you code a few hours a week. Our list of free AI coding assistants covers what the free plans allow.
Frequently asked questions
Is Cursor better than GitHub Copilot?
For most developers, no. GitHub Copilot Pro costs $10 a month, works in your existing editor and includes credits for Claude, GPT and Gemini models. Cursor is the better pick if you want an editor built around agents and accept Grok-only models on Plus or usage billing for third-party models on Premium.
How much does GitHub Copilot cost compared with Cursor?
Copilot runs from $0 to $100 a month for individuals (Free, Pro, Pro+, Max) and $19 or $39 per seat for Business and Enterprise. Cursor runs from $0 to $200 a month (Free, Plus, Premium, Super, Ultra) and $30, $100 or $200 per Teams seat, per both vendors' pages in October 2026.
What are GitHub AI Credits?
They are how GitHub bills Copilot chat, agents and code review. One credit equals $0.01, Pro includes 1,500 a month, and completions do not use any. When you run out, you wait for the reset, use a lighter model or set a budget for extra usage.
Is GitHub Copilot free?
Yes, with limits. Copilot Free includes 2,000 completions a month and limited chat and agent use with automatic model selection. Verified students get Copilot Student free, and GitHub says verified teachers and maintainers of popular open source projects may qualify for free Pro.
Is Cursor Pro still $20?
Only for existing subscribers. New customers buy Cursor through The X Subscription, where Premium at $30 a month is the plan Cursor lists as comparable to legacy Pro. If you need the free route, see how to get Cursor Pro for free.
Which is cheaper for a team?
GitHub Copilot. Ten Business seats come to $2,280 a year against $3,600 for ten Cursor Teams seats on the Premium tier (our arithmetic on printed prices), before extra usage on either side.
How we compared them
We read GitHub Copilot plans, GitHub's Copilot plan docs, Cursor pricing and Cursor's pricing help page on October 28, 2026. Prices are US list prices; yearly and team totals are our arithmetic on those prices. Credit and usage allowances are not comparable across the two vendors, so we compare what each plan includes rather than converting one into the other.
