Updated November 4, 2026: prices re-checked on each vendor's US store or pricing page. Compared from vendor specs and pricing pages, not tested hands-on.

As of November 2026, the top three running watches on our rule are the COROS PACE 4 at $249, the Amazfit Balance 2 at $299.99 and the COROS PACE 4 Pro at $449. Each has dual-band GNSS as its maker states it, at least 10 hours of battery in that mode, and a current US store price. The rule is set out below, and the order follows from it.

Dupple data: of the running watches we could read on the makers' US pages, eight make the list under the rule below. None of the eight needs a required plan that we could find on its vendor's pages, so the cost table shows device prices.

Dupple card with the top five running watches in ranking order: COROS PACE 4 $249, Amazfit Balance 2 $299.99, COROS PACE 4 Pro $449, Amazfit Cheetah 2 Ultra $599.99, Suunto Run 2 $349.

How the order is set

A watch must pass three gates. Gate 1: dual-band (multi-band, dual-frequency) GNSS, as the maker states it. Gate 2: at least 10 hours of GPS battery in that dual-band mode, as the maker labels it. A figure the maker does not tie to dual-band or multi-band does not count. The 10-hour floor is 50 km at 12:00 min/km, which is 600 minutes. A marathon (42.195 km) at that pace takes 8 hours 26 minutes, so the floor covers a marathon up to a 50 km ultra at a run-walk pace. Gate 3: a running watch that is current and in stock on the maker's US store, with the US price read that day.

A watch that passes all three gates earns one point for each of eight tests. Point 1: training plans or daily suggested workouts on the watch. Point 2: a recovery, readiness or training-status metric. Point 3: a race time predictor, meaning a named race or finish-time estimate on the watch (for example Garmin's race predictor, Amazfit's finish time prediction or Suunto's Marathon Time). Point 4: offline maps on the watch (breadcrumb only does not count). Point 5: dual-band battery of at least 20 hours. Point 6: dual-band battery of at least 40 hours. Point 7: weight of at most 55 g as the maker states it. Point 8: US price of at most $400.

The order is by points, then by the lower US price, then by the lower weight. A brand gets at most two picks, and a brand's third qualifier goes into "Just outside the eight" with its score. One pick per model: sizes and display variants count once, by the best-scoring variant (ties: lower price, then lower weight), and the card names the others with price.

A feature counts when the maker's own spec list or product description for that watch names it. Text repeated in a footer or carousel across several product pages does not count, and a feature that needs a paid plan does not count. A battery figure that needs solar charging does not count either: the Instinct 3 45 mm Solar keeps its 24-hour figure, not the figure with solar charging. Garmin's "Max Accuracy" mode counts as multi-band, as its support FAQ on satellite modes shows (read November 4, 2026).

The eight, in ranking order

1. COROS PACE 4: best budget watch with offline maps (7 points)

Dupple spec card for COROS PACE 4: $249 (COROS US store, Nov 4, 2026), all-satellite dual-frequency GPS, 31 h dual-frequency battery, 40 g with silicone band.
Dupple spec card

$249 for the White and Silicone version on COROS's US store, read November 4, 2026 ($249.00, ADD TO BAG). The spec sheet gives all-satellite dual-frequency GPS, 31 hours in that mode and 40 g with the silicone band.

Points: 7. Training plans, recovery and training load, and a race predictor on the spec sheet (points 1 to 3). Downloadable global maps (point 4). Dual-band battery of 31 hours (point 5). Weight of 40 g (point 7). Price under $400 (point 8).

Pros: the joint-lowest list price of the eight ($249, level with the Suunto Run). Cons: 31 hours is the shortest dual-frequency figure among the seven-point watches. COROS's buy page also prints 41 hours in "All Systems (High)" mode, which its Pro FAQ calls single-frequency, so that figure is not counted.

Best for: a budget runner who wants offline maps, which the other budget pick lacks.

COROS's PACE 4 page

2. Amazfit Balance 2: best first watch on price and battery (7 points)

Dupple spec card for Amazfit Balance 2: $299.99 (Amazfit US store, Nov 4, 2026), dual-frequency GPS, 33 h Accurate GPS mode, 43 g without strap.
Dupple spec card

$299.99 in the Black version with the additional Lava strap, on Amazfit's US store, read November 4, 2026. The page names "Accurate GPS Mode: Up to 33 hours", described as "dual-frequency, all satellites", and 43 g without strap.

Points: 7. Training plans viewable on the watch (point 1). A readiness score (point 2). Finish time prediction, which we count as the race time predictor (point 3). Downloadable offline maps (point 4). Dual-band battery of 33 hours (point 5). Weight of 43 g (point 7). Price under $400 (point 8).

Pros: the second-lightest seven-point watch, after the PACE 4. Cons: 33 hours is well short of the 40 hours on the COROS Pro.

Best for: the lowest-priced of the three first watches, with the most dual-frequency hours (33, against 24).

Amazfit's Balance 2 page

3. COROS PACE 4 Pro: best marathon watch for the price (7 points)

Dupple spec card for COROS PACE 4 Pro: $449 (COROS US store, Nov 4, 2026), all-satellite dual-frequency GPS, 40 h dual-frequency battery, 51 g with silicone band.
Dupple spec card

$449 in the Black and Silicone version on COROS's US store, read November 4, 2026 ($449.00, ADD TO BAG). The spec sheet gives 40 hours in dual-frequency mode, with 30 hours when the always-on display is on. The buy-page FAQ gives 45 hours for "MAX GPS", which it says is dual-frequency.

Points: 7. Points 1 to 4 as for the PACE 4, plus dual-band battery of at least 20 and at least 40 hours (points 5 and 6) and a weight of 51 g with the silicone band (point 7). The price is above $400, so point 8 is not counted.

Pros: 40 hours in dual-frequency mode, with downloadable global maps. Cons: the higher price of the two COROS picks. The 43 g figure is for the nylon band, so the 51 g silicone figure is the one used.

Best for: a marathon runner who wants 40 hours of dual-frequency GPS for under half the Enduro 4's $899.99.

COROS's PACE 4 Pro page

4. Amazfit Cheetah 2 Ultra: best for ultra and trail, 60 hours at 52 g (7 points)

Dupple spec card for Amazfit Cheetah 2 Ultra: $599.99 (Amazfit US store, Nov 4, 2026), 60 h Accuracy GPS dual-frequency, 52 g without strap, offline maps and finish time prediction.
Dupple spec card

$599.99 on Amazfit's US store, read November 4, 2026. The page names "Accuracy GPS Mode Battery Life: Up to 60 hours", described as "dual frequency, all satellite systems", and 52 g without strap.

Points: 7. Training plans, which its FAQ confirms (point 1). Training load and HRV (point 2). Finish time prediction (point 3). Downloadable offline maps with contour lines (point 4). Dual-band battery of 60 hours (points 5 and 6). Weight of 52 g (point 7).

Pros: the longest dual-frequency battery among the seven-point watches. Cons: the second-highest price on the list, and the 60 hours is for Accuracy GPS mode only.

Best for: an ultra or trail runner who wants 60 hours of dual-frequency GPS on a 52 g watch.

Amazfit's Cheetah 2 Ultra page

5. Suunto Run 2 All Black 4GB: a first watch with offline maps and free Suunto apps (6 points)

$349 for the All Black with 4 GB of storage on Suunto's US store, read November 4, 2026 ($349.00, available). The spec list names "Exercise Recovery Assessment" and "Offline maps on watch", and an icon reads "24 HRS / Dual-Band GPS" beside a weight of 53 g.

Points: 6. Recovery assessment (point 2). Marathon Time, which turns the current pace into a finishing time, as the race time predictor (point 3). Offline maps on the watch (point 4). Dual-band battery of 24 hours (point 5). Weight of 53 g (point 7). Price of $349 (point 8). The page names no training plan (point 1), and 24 hours is under 40, so point 6 is not counted.

Pros: offline maps and a race predictor for $349. Cons: 24 hours in dual-band mode, under the 31 to 60 hours of the four seven-point watches.

Best for: a first watch with offline maps on the watch and Suunto's free sports apps, at $349.

6. Garmin Instinct 3 45 mm Solar: a first watch with solar charging (6 points)

Dupple spec card for Garmin Instinct 3 45 mm Solar: $349.99 (Garmin US store, Nov 4, 2026), 24 h All Satellite Systems + Multi-Band, 52 g, training readiness and race predictor.
Dupple spec card

$349.99 for the 45 mm Solar on Garmin's US store, read November 4, 2026 (product page: $349.99 USD, "inStock": true). The battery table gives "All Satellite Systems + Multi-Band: Up to 24 hours" and the page gives 52 g. Garmin's footnote on that figure reads "assuming typical use with SatIQ technology".

Points: 6. Training plans and daily suggested workouts (point 1). Training readiness (point 2). Race predictor (point 3). Dual-band battery of 24 hours (point 5). Weight of 52 g (point 7). Price of $349.99 (point 8). Point 4 is not counted, as the page names no offline map on the watch, and point 6 is not counted at 24 hours.

Other variants: the 45 mm AMOLED ($349.99, 53 g, 23 hours) also scores six and loses the weight tie. The 50 mm Solar and AMOLED ($399.99, 58 and 59 g) score five each.

Pros: multi-band GPS, a race predictor and a price under $350. Cons: the 24-hour figure carries Garmin's SatIQ typical-use footnote, and the solar-charging figure is not counted.

Best for: a first watch with solar charging, multi-band GPS and training plans, at $349.99.

7. Garmin Enduro 4: the marathon pick with the longer battery, 60 hours (6 points)

Dupple spec card for Garmin Enduro 4: $899.99 (Garmin US store, Nov 4, 2026), 60 h Max Accuracy multi-band, 66 g with strap, built-in mapping and race predictor.
Dupple spec card

$899.99 on Garmin's US store, read November 4, 2026 (product page: $899.99 USD, "inStock": true). The battery table gives "Activity Mode (Max Accuracy): Up to 60 hours" and 66 g with strap. The 60-hour figure is Max Accuracy, which counts as multi-band.

Points: 6. Training plans (point 1), training readiness (point 2), race predictor (point 3), built-in mapping (point 4) and 60 hours of dual-band battery (points 5 and 6). Points 7 and 8 are not counted: 66 g is over 55 g, and the price is over $400.

Pros: the longest battery among the six-pointers, and built-in mapping. Cons: $300 more than the Cheetah 2 Ultra, and 66 g with strap.

Best for: a marathon runner who wants 60 hours in Max Accuracy and built-in mapping.

8. Suunto Run All Black with Silicone Strap: the lightest budget watch, 36 g (5 points)

Image: Suunto

$249 for the All Black with Silicone Strap on Suunto's US store, read November 4, 2026 ($249.00, available). The page also shows $199 ("Save $50", taken at checkout, no end date shown); the ranking uses $249. The page gives 36 g, "Up to 20 hours" of training in "Performance mode, best GPS accuracy (multi-band)", and "Marathon Time", which it describes as a real-time estimate of the marathon finish time.

Points: 5. Recovery and sleep analysis (point 2). Marathon Time as the race time predictor (point 3). Dual-band battery of 20 hours (point 5). Weight of 36 g (point 7). Price of $249 (point 8). The page names no offline map on the watch (point 4 not counted), and its "Up to 40 hours" figure is for power saving mode, which is not dual-band, so point 6 is not counted.

Pros: the lightest pick at 36 g, and level with the PACE 4 on list price. Cons: 20 hours is the shortest dual-band figure on the list, and the watch has no offline maps.

Best for: a budget runner who wants the lightest watch on the list, 36 g.

Just outside the eight

None of these is picked. Each is either a third pick for its brand or scores below the cut.

  • Amazfit T-Rex 3 ($279.99, 6 points, 42 hours, 68.3 g): a third Amazfit pick. Its page names Zepp Coach training plans, a readiness score and offline maps, but no race predictor.
  • COROS NOMAD ($349, 6 points, 34 hours, 61 g): a third COROS pick. 61 g is over the 55 g line.
  • Garmin fēnix 9 51 mm ($1,099.99, 6 points, 45 hours Max Accuracy, 99 g): a third Garmin pick, above $400 and over the weight line. Its 47 mm size scores five and its 43 mm size four.
  • Garmin Forerunner 970 ($749.99, 5 points, 21 hours, 56 g): its product page reads "inStock": true. A third Garmin pick, and above $400.
  • COROS APEX 4 42 mm ($429, 5 points): a third COROS pick.
  • Suunto Race UTMB World Series ($399, 5 points, 50 hours, 83 g): a third Suunto pick, with no race predictor.
  • Suunto Race S UTMB World Series ($349, 5 points) and Race S Titanium Graphite ($449, 5 points): third Suunto picks. Both name a Race Time Estimator, which counts as point 3.
  • Suunto Race 3S Titanium Black ($599, 4 points) and Vertical 2 All Black ($599, 4 points): third Suunto picks, below five points.
  • Amazfit T-Rex 3 Pro 48 mm ($399.99, 6 points, 38 hours, 52 g) and Balance 3 ($369.99, 6 points, 41 hours): third Amazfit picks. Neither names a finish-time prediction. The Balance 3's lowest-priced variant (stainless steel, $369.99) weighs 62 g, so point 7 is not counted.
  • Garmin Forerunner 570 ($549.99, 4 points, 13 hours) and Forerunner 265 ($449.99, 4 points, 15 hours): neither reaches 20 hours in multi-band mode.

Apple and Polar: why they are not in the eight

Apple. The Apple Watch Ultra 4 GPS + Cellular, 49mm titanium case is from $799, read November 4, 2026. Its "Up to 50 hours" and "Up to 84 hours in Low Power Mode" figures are not tied to dual-frequency mode, so it fails Gate 2. Apple's Apple Watch Ultra page

Polar. The Vantage V3 ($699.99), Vantage M3 ($499.99) and Grit X2 ($799.99) state dual-frequency GPS, but their training figures name no GPS setting, so they fail Gate 2. The Pacer ($299.90) names a 32-hour GPS figure but no dual-frequency GPS, so it fails Gate 1. Polar's Vantage V3 page

Cost of ownership at 12 and 24 months

No required plan was found for any of the eight. Suunto says its sports apps and guides are free, and the other vendor pages we read name none. Each total is the device price. The Suunto Run's rows use $249, not its undated $199 checkout price.

FAQ

What is the best budget running watch on this list?

The COROS PACE 4 at $249, read November 4, 2026. It has all-satellite dual-frequency GPS, 31 hours in that mode, downloadable global maps and a race predictor, at 40 g.

Do any of these watches need a subscription?

Not on the vendor pages we read. Suunto's sports apps and guides are free, and the Amazfit Balance 2 and Cheetah 2 Ultra pages say their workout and recovery data needs no subscription in the Zepp app.

Why does Garmin have only two picks?

Three Garmin watches score six or more: the Instinct 3 45 mm Solar, the Enduro 4 and the fēnix 9 at 51 mm. A brand gets two picks, so the fēnix 9 goes to the side list.

Does Garmin's Max Accuracy count as dual-band?

For this page, yes: Garmin's support FAQ lists Max Accuracy under the earlier name "All + Multi-band" (read November 4, 2026).

What does dual-band GPS mean here?

It is the vendor's own term for GNSS on two frequency bands, counted as each vendor states it. Positioning accuracy was not tested on any watch.

Does the rule reward recovery tracking?

Only when the watch's own spec list names the metric. For recovery and sleep scoring in rings, read Whoop vs Oura and Ultrahuman vs Oura.

Methodology

Roster. On November 4, 2026 we read each brand's current US lineup on its own store or pages.

Mode rule. The battery figure is the one the vendor ties to dual-band or multi-band mode: COROS the dual-frequency spec row (the buy-page MAX GPS figure for PACE 4 Pro), Amazfit the Accurate or Accuracy mode its own description calls dual-frequency, Suunto the Performance mode labelled multi-band, Garmin All Satellite Systems + Multi-Band or Max Accuracy.

Weight basis and prices. The headline weight the maker prints for the lowest-priced variant: COROS with the silicone band, Amazfit without strap, Garmin as printed, Suunto as printed. Each price is the US store figure for the listed variant on the read date. No compare-at or estimated value is used as a list price.

Not counted. Garmin's Forerunner 165 prints no multi-band figure (All-Systems GNSS up to 17 hours), so it fails Gate 1. COROS sells the DURA 2 Solar as a bike computer. Polar Ignite 3 and Unite were not read. The Race 3S Race Planner is planned for a future update.
