Three brands at three tiers

The comparison uses one current, in-stock model per brand per tier. Entry is each brand's entry running watch, at or under $300. Mid-range is its mid-line running or multisport watch. Flagship is its premium model in stock. A tier is set by a model's place in its line, not by its price. The tiers draw on the running and multisport lines: COROS PACE, APEX and VERTIX; Garmin Forerunner, fēnix and Enduro; Suunto Run, Race and Vertical. Garmin's Instinct 3, Venu 4 and tactix 8 sit outside those lines and are left out.

Figures as each brand prints them on its own US page, read November 4, 2026. The matched figure is the multi-band or dual-frequency GPS hour count; see the methodology for the exceptions. Garmin prices are the Product schema offer price on each Garmin page.

The rule that picks each tier winner

Within each tier, the winner is the watch with the highest matched GPS hour count its brand prints on its own page. Matched means the multi-band or dual-frequency figure, including Garmin's Max Accuracy row, which Garmin's support FAQ lists under the former name "All + Multi-band". Figures under an endurance or power-saving label are shown but not ranked. A model with several cases is compared at its highest matched case. A tie goes to the lower US price, then to the model with no solar or special-edition label. Suunto's affiliate link plays no part.

Applied to the table, the PACE 4 wins the entry tier (31 hours, against 20 for the Suunto Run and 17 for the Forerunner 165), the Race 2 the mid tier (55, against 40 and 15), and the Vertical 2 the flagship tier (65, against 62 for the fēnix 8 51 mm and 41 for the APEX 4). The Vertical Solar Canyon, Vertical Solar Sand and Vertical Solar UTMB World Series also print 65 multi-band hours at $599. The Vertical 2 wins that tie on the label rule; the 90-hour solar figure needs solar charging.

The rule has limits. The Forerunner 165 prints no multi-band figure, so its All-Systems GNSS figure (17 hours) is used and flagged. Each brand words its modes differently, so the figures are a printed-number comparison, not a measured one.

Entry tier: COROS PACE 4, Suunto Run, Garmin Forerunner 165

1. COROS PACE 4: the entry winner on the rule

Dupple spec card for COROS PACE 4: $249 (read Nov 4, 2026), 31 h dual-frequency GPS, 32 g nylon band, topo maps on watch.

COROS's specs page prints 31 hours for All Systems + Dual-Frequency and 41 hours for All Systems (High), and up to 19 days of daily use. The nylon band weighs 32 g. COROS's PACE 4 store page

  • Pro: the highest matched figure in the entry tier, at a $249 listed price.

  • Con: 20 multi-band hours is about two-thirds of the PACE 4's 31.

  • Pro: the highest Garmin figure in the mid tier, with a multi-band mode named on the page.
  • Con: 15 matched hours is the lowest in the mid tier, and it costs $0.99 more than the PACE 4 Pro.

Flagship tier: Suunto Vertical 2, Garmin fēnix 8 51 mm, COROS APEX 4

7. Suunto Vertical 2: the flagship winner on the rule

Image: Suunto

Suunto's Vertical 2 page lists the all-black model in stock, up to 65 hours in All-Systems GNSS with multi-band, up to 20 days in smartwatch mode, 87 g and 100 m water resistance. Its tie with the Vertical Solar models is settled in the methodology. Suunto's US store, Vertical 2

  • Pro: the highest matched figure in the flagship tier, and 100 m water resistance.
  • Con: 87 g is the heaviest weight in the table, except the fēnix 8's stainless model.

8. Garmin fēnix 8 51 mm: 62 multi-band hours at $1,099.99

Dupple spec card for Garmin fēnix 8 51 mm: $1,099.99 (read Nov 4, 2026), 62 h All Satellite + Multi-band, 102 g stainless steel model, 51 mm AMOLED case.
Dupple spec card

Garmin's fēnix 8 page lists the 51 mm AMOLED model at $1,099.99 (slate gray with a black silicone band), in stock, and 62 hours in All Satellite Systems + Multi-band mode for that case size. The stainless steel model of that size weighs 102 g. The fēnix 9 and Enduro 4 print lower matched figures, see the methodology. Garmin's fēnix 8 51 mm page

  • Pro: 62 matched hours, the most of any Garmin pick on this page, on an AMOLED 51 mm case.
  • Con: $1,099.99 is the highest price in the table, and the 102 g stainless model is the heaviest figure printed here.

9. COROS APEX 4: in stock, 41 dual-frequency hours

Dupple spec card for COROS APEX 4 46 mm: $479 (read Nov 4, 2026), 41 h dual-frequency GPS, 51 g nylon band, 65 h endurance, not matched.
Dupple spec card

COROS's specs page prints 41 hours for All Systems + Dual-Frequency on the 46 mm model, 53 hours in All Systems, and 65 hours under an endurance label that is not matched. The buy page lists the 46 mm at $479 and in stock. The 42 mm model ($429) prints 26 hours dual-frequency, below its 46 mm sibling, so the 46 mm is the one compared. COROS's APEX 4 page

  • Pro: in stock at $479, with 41 matched hours.
  • Con: 41 hours is 24 below the Vertical 2's 65, and 21 below the fēnix 8's 62.

Head to head: battery

Each battery claim depends on its mode, so read the mode each page prints, not the biggest number.

Head to head: GPS

COROS names dual-frequency GPS on the PACE 4, PACE 4 Pro and APEX 4. Suunto says "dual-band" and "multi-band", and Garmin's tables use three different multi-band labels. These labels are close but not one standard, so this page ranks printed hours, not GPS quality.

Head to head: maps and navigation

COROS's PACE 4 page names topo maps on the watch, and Suunto's Race 2 page names offline maps.

Head to head: apps and subscriptions

Garmin is the only one of the three with a paid add-on on the pages read: Connect+ costs $6.99 USD a month or $69.99 USD a year on Garmin's own page. COROS's PACE 4 and APEX 4 pages name sync to Strava and other apps and mention no membership fee in the text read. Suunto's Race 2 page names offline maps and improved navigation, but does not say whether they need a subscription.

Head to head: weight and fit

Printed weights run from 32 g (PACE 4, nylon band) to 102 g (fēnix 8 51 mm, stainless steel model). The PACE 4 Pro's silicone band is heavier, at 51 g against 43 g with nylon.

Head to head: price

Listed prices: $249 for the PACE 4 and Suunto Run (the Run was $199 at checkout on November 4, with no end date shown), $249.99 for the Forerunner 165, $449 for the PACE 4 Pro, $449.99 for the Forerunner 265S, $479 for the APEX 4, $499 for the Race 2, $599 for the Vertical 2 and $1,099.99 for the fēnix 8 51 mm.

Cost of ownership over 12 and 24 months

The table adds the device price to the plan cost. Garmin's Connect+ plan is optional, and it is modeled both ways: annual and monthly. The COROS and Suunto watches need no plan on the pages read.

Cost of ownership on the three brands' US pages, read November 4, 2026. Garmin rows add the optional Connect+ plan.

Dupple data: computed from vendor prices on November 4, 2026. Connect+ annual: $69.99 for one year, $139.98 for two. Connect+ monthly: $6.99 times 12 is $83.88, and times 24 is $167.76, so annual saves $13.89 in year one and $27.78 over two. Monthly totals with Connect+: Forerunner 165 $333.87 and $417.75; Forerunner 265S $533.87 and $617.75; fēnix 8 51 mm $1,183.87 and $1,267.75.

FAQ

Is COROS better than Garmin?

On matched figures, COROS wins the entry tier, with the PACE 4 at 31 hours against 17 for the Forerunner 165. In the flagship tier, Garmin's fēnix 8 51 mm has 62 hours, against 41 for the APEX 4, and the Vertical 2 leads at 65.

Is Garmin better than COROS for everyday battery?

Only at the flagship. Garmin's fēnix 8 51 mm claims up to 29 days in smartwatch mode, against 24 for the APEX 4 and 19 for the PACE 4 in COROS's own daily-use figures. The Forerunner 165 (up to 11 days) and Forerunner 265S (up to 15 days) trail the PACE 4.

Is Suunto better than Garmin?

On matched figures, yes: the Race 2 has 55 hours against 15 for the Forerunner 265S, and the Vertical 2 has 65 against 62 for the fēnix 8 51 mm. The brands label modes differently, so this is a printed-figure result.

Which watch costs least over two years?

At listed prices, the PACE 4 and the Suunto Run both total $249 over 24 months; the Suunto Run is $199 while Suunto's $50 checkout discount lasts (no end date shown on November 4). Among the Garmin models, the Forerunner 165 with the annual Connect+ plan totals $389.97.

Why is the fēnix 9 not in the table?

Its highest matched case, the Pro Solar 51 mm, prints 54 hours in Max Accuracy (75 with solar), and its 43 mm case prints 15 hours at $999.99. Both are below the fēnix 8 51 mm's 62 hours.

Why is the Suunto Run 2 not in the table?

The Run 2 costs $349 (4 GB) to $399 and prints 24 hours multi-band. It sits above the $300 entry band, and as a mid-range pick it would still lose to the Race 2's 55 hours.

Methodology

We compared the US pages of COROS, Garmin and Suunto on November 4, 2026, using each vendor's product and spec pages, the Suunto US feed and each Garmin page's Product price data. Every battery and weight figure is the brand's own claim.

Mode matching. The matched figure is the multi-band or dual-frequency hour count each brand prints: COROS's All Systems + Dual-Frequency row, Suunto's All-Systems GNSS with multi-band, and Garmin's multi-band, All Satellite Systems + Multi-band or Max Accuracy row. The Forerunner 165 has no multi-band row, so its 17 hours are used and flagged. A model with several cases is compared at its highest matched case. Not used: the PACE 4 Pro's 60-hour single-frequency figure, the APEX 4's 65 hours under an endurance label, the 42 mm APEX 4 (26 hours) and the Vertical Solar 90-hour solar figure.

Left out inside each brand. Garmin: the Forerunner 70 (16 hours, the same $249.99 as the 165), the Forerunner 170 (14 hours), the Forerunner 965 ($599.99, 19 hours), the Forerunner 570 and 970, the fēnix 9 (its Pro Solar 51 mm is the highest matched case at 54 hours; its 43 mm prints 15 hours at $999.99), the Enduro 4 (60 hours) and the fēnix 8 47 mm (35 hours). Outside the tiers: the Instinct 3 AMOLED 45 mm ($349.99, 23 hours multi-band), the Venu 4 45 mm ($549.99, 17 hours) and the tactix 8 51 mm AMOLED ($1,399.99, 62 hours, level with the fēnix 8 but dearer, so the fēnix 8 wins the tie). Suunto: the Race 3S (38 hours) and the older Race and Race S models sit below the Race 2; the Run 2 ($349 with 4 GB, $399 otherwise, 24 hours) sits above the $300 entry band. COROS: the VERTIX 2S is out of stock on the read date; the NOMAD ($349, 34 hours All-Satellite Dual-Frequency) is an adventure watch outside the tiers; the PACE Pro ($299, 31 hours dual-frequency) ties the PACE 4 on hours at a higher price; the APEX 2 specs page prints only a single-frequency mode; the PACE 3 is previous generation.

No paid placement decides the order, and the Suunto link does not enter the rule.
