Ever wish your long, messy research could magically turn into something clear and visual? This tutorial outlines the exact steps to access deep research mode, give Gemini your research query, review the plan, let Gemini generate your research report, and convert your report into an infographic.
By the end of the glorious tutorial, you’ll be able to:
- Access deep research mode
- Submit a research query and review the plan
- Generate your research report
- Convert your report into an infographic
Excited? Let’s dive in!
Step 1 - Access deep research mode
Access Google Gemini and log in to your account or create a new one if you haven’t done so.

In the main chat interface, click ‘Deep Research’ at the bottom of the chat window.

This button activates the research agent, which searches the Internet, finds relevant web links, and synthesises information into a comprehensive report.
Also, make sure you have selected the Flash 2.0 model for this session. Do not select the 2.5 pro, which doesn’t have a deep research feature.

Step 2 - Submit a research query and review the plan
Now that the chat session is set up. It’s time to submit a research query. Decide the topic you want to research and write a prompt. Let’s say you want to research about the evolution of whales from the Early Eocene Epoch.
Prompt:
Tell me about the evolution of whales from the early eocene epoch.

Once you hit submit, Gemini will create a research plan and show you a message like, “I’ve put together a research plan. Let me know if you need to update it.” Take a moment to look it over—if something feels off or you want to tweak it, just click "Edit plan" and spell out what you'd like to change. The more details you give upfront, the better Gemini can tailor things for you. If everything looks good, go ahead and click "Start research" to get things rolling.
For now, we reviewed the plan. It looks interesting. Let’s give it a go.

Step 3 - Generate your research report
After you click “Start research,” Gemini gets to work—digging through multiple sources, analyzing the info, and pulling it all together into a detailed, multi-page report. Once it’s done, you’ll get a full document with organized sections, key data points, and insights. Take some time to review it and make sure it covers everything you were hoping for. If you notice anything missing, you might want to tweak your original prompt next time for better coverage.

Gemini created an extensive research showing the evolution of whales from early epoch period to the present one. It created tables for quick consumption.
If you’re not satisfied with the report, you can always prompt Gemini to add more details in the research report. Once you’re satisfied there are two ways to save the report, you can either click ‘Export’ and and transfer the contents to Google Docs or copy the text and paste it in your favorite word processing tool. Or, you can move one step further and do something wonderful with this report.

Step 4 - Convert your report into an infographic
In the top-right corner of your research report, you’ll see a “Create” button—click it and you’ll get five options:
- Web page
- Infographic
- Quiz, Audio Overview
- Describe your own app.

To turn your research into a visual, go with “Infographic.” This opens up Canvas, a pop-up where Gemini builds your infographic as a single HTML file.
You can switch between the “Code” view to see the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, or hit “Preview” to check out how the final infographic looks.

Interesting tip: While the infographic tool makes great visuals, don’t skip the other “Create” options. The “Audio Overview” is great for turning your research into a podcast-style summary you can listen to or share, and the “Quiz” option is perfect for testing how well someone understood the material. It’s a fun way to turn your research into something interactive.
The infographic looks good, however, we thought it should have a few more graphics preferably of the whales in the Eocene Epoch. We gave the following prompt to add images.
Prompt:
Add the images of Eocene era whales and other interesting pictures wherever possible in the infographic.

You can now export your infographic by clicking the ‘Share’ button at the top of the infographic display window. In the ensuing window, you can either click ‘Copy link’ to copy and paste it into Google Docs or share it on LinkedIn, Facebook, and other social media sites.

That's it for this tutorial. Remember, writing a detailed prompt is key to a perfect report. You can also add graphics and other visuals by prompting Gemini. Everything that you do is only limited to your imagination. So, think outside the box and creating something wonderful for your audience.
