🍎 Apple chooses Google Gemini to power new Siri LINK

  • Apple has confirmed that Google Gemini will serve as the foundation for the next-generation Siri, which is expected to launch later this year with iOS 26.4 in March or April.
  • Apple said after careful evaluation that Google's technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models, since Gemini's large language model is significantly larger than Apple's own model.
  • The new Siri will include features first shown at WWDC 2024 but later delayed, such as better understanding of personal context, on-screen awareness, and deeper per-app controls.
  • 🛒 Google launches Universal Commerce Protocol for AI shopping LINK

  • Google has launched Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard that connects AI agents with online shopping platforms to help customers find and purchase products more easily.
  • The protocol brings three new features: a checkout option inside Google Search for US shoppers, a Business Agent that answers product questions for retailers like Lowe's and Michaels, and Direct Offers for advertisers.
  • Google built UCP with partners including Shopify, Etsy and Walmart, and the protocol works with existing standards like Agent2Agent, Agent Payment Protocols and Model Context Protocol.
  • 🔐 Instagram denies data breach LINK

  • Instagram says it has not been breached, despite users receiving suspicious password reset emails that prompted claims of a major security incident from antivirus company Malwarebytes.
  • Malwarebytes posted on Bluesky that cybercriminals stole data from 17.5 million Instagram accounts, including usernames, physical addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses, now for sale on the dark web.
  • Instagram responded on X that it fixed an issue allowing an external party to request password reset emails for some users, telling people to ignore those messages without explaining further details.
  • 🏥 Anthropic launches Claude for Healthcare LINK

  • Anthropic has launched Claude for Healthcare, a set of tools that let hospitals, insurance companies, and patients use Claude for medical tasks through products ready for HIPAA compliance.
  • New connectors let Claude pull data from the CMS Coverage Database, ICD-10 codes, and the National Provider Identifier Registry to help with prior authorization, medical coding, and claims appeals.
  • Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the US can now give Claude secure access to their lab results and health records through Apple Health, Android Health Connect, and other integrations rolling out in beta.
  • 💊 Nvidia and Eli Lilly launch AI drug discovery lab LINK

  • Nvidia and Eli Lilly are launching a joint AI lab focused on drug discovery, a five-year commitment worth over $1 billion that aims to speed up how new medicines are found and developed.
  • The lab will focus on creating "ground truth data" through large-scale lab work to train biology foundation models, building a feedback loop where better experiments produce better data and better models.
  • Lilly already built what it calls the industry's most powerful pharmaceutical-owned AI supercomputer using Nvidia's DGX SuperPOD platform, and this new lab expands on that existing infrastructure.
  • 🎙️ Netflix launches its first official podcasts LINK

  • Netflix is launching its first official podcasts this week, starting with Bill Simmons hosting a live show after an NFL playoff game, with plans to add dozens more shows in the coming months.
  • The streaming service has signed deals with networks like The Ringer, iHeartMedia, and Barstool Sports, paying Barstool more than $10 million a year, though Netflix passed on bigger offers like Alex Cooper's Call Her Daddy.
  • Netflix is treating podcasts as a low-risk test, starting with modest spending and limited marketing before committing more money, while other streaming services like Hulu have started meeting with podcasters after seeing Netflix's interest.
