🧠 OpenAI launches o3-mini
LINK
OpenAI has launched o3-mini, a new reasoning model that is effective at solving complex problems and can be accessed by selecting "Reason" in ChatGPT.
o3-mini is 63% cheaper than OpenAI's o1-mini but remains seven times more expensive than the non-reasoning GPT-4o mini model, costing $1.10 per million input tokens.
o3-mini is considered a "medium risk" model due to its advanced capabilities, posing challenges with control and safety evaluations, although it is not yet proficient in real-world research tasks.
🕶️ Apple kill AR glasses project
LINK
Apple has discontinued its augmented reality glasses project, codenamed N107, which was intended to rival Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses, following challenges with technology integration and performance.
The decision comes after the commercial failure of the Apple Vision Pro headset, which, despite its technical capabilities, struggled in the market with a high price of $3,499 and limited use cases.
In contrast, Meta's collaboration with Ray-Ban resulted in over one million units sold in 2024, with plans for future models, as Apple reconsiders its strategy in the AR/VR sector.
❌ Apple wants to halt Google search monopoly case
LINK
Apple has filed an emergency motion to pause the remedies trial in the Justice Department’s search monopolization lawsuit against Google, seeking to have a more direct role in the case.
The trial's remedies phase is scheduled for April, following a ruling that Google holds monopolistic power in the search market, partly due to its payments to Apple for default placement on iOS.
Apple argues that its interests may not be adequately represented by Google, as the government's proposals could impact its business deals, urging a court stay to prevent potential irreversible damage.
🏛️ Meta considers moving incorporation from Delaware
LINK
Meta Platforms is considering changing its incorporation from Delaware to Texas and has engaged in discussions with Texas officials regarding this potential shift.
The company reassured that it has no intention of moving its corporate headquarters from Menlo Park, California, despite contemplating reincorporation.
The move to Texas could be influenced by the state's more favorable legal and regulatory environment, appealing to firms interested in reducing expenses and optimizing operations.
🔍 US investigates China's DeepSeek over AI chip use
LINK
U.S. officials are investigating if Chinese startup DeepSeek used Nvidia semiconductors that are restricted from being exported to China, which has caused a stir in the tech industry.
The Commerce Department is probing whether DeepSeek accessed banned AI chips through third-party sources in countries like Singapore and the United Arab Emirates, amidst concerns of chip smuggling.
DeepSeek claims using Nvidia's H800 chips legally purchased in 2023, but reports suggest some of their AI chip fleet may include smuggled or not yet banned components.
