The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) revealed that nearly 76% of 642 analyzed subscription apps and websites employed at least one dark pattern, with about 67% using multiple manipulative design techniques.
Dark patterns, such as sneaking, obstruction, nagging, forced action, and social proof, are used to influence user behavior and make it challenging for consumers to cancel subscriptions or avoid unwanted charges.
The new FTC report may indicate increased scrutiny of consumer fraud, coinciding with the U.S. Department of Justice suing Apple over alleged App Store monopoly practices that include subscription services.
