⚔️ Elon Musk's X goes to war with advertisers over boycottLINK
X filed an antitrust lawsuit on Tuesday against major advertisers including Unilever, Mars, CVS, and Ørsted, accusing them of an “illegal boycott” that withheld billions of dollars in advertising revenue from the platform formerly known as Twitter.
According to X, the World Federation of Advertisers' initiative, GARM, organized a collective boycott to pressure the platform into complying with specific safety standards, despite X expressing enthusiasm to rejoin GARM last month.
X CEO Linda Yaccarino and Elon Musk assert that the advertisers’ actions pose long-term risks to free expression on the platform, and the lawsuit seeks to declare these actions illegal and secure damages during the trial.
🤣 ‘There’s no price’ Microsoft could pay Apple to use BingLINK
Apple's senior VP, Eddy Cue, testified during the Google antitrust trial that Microsoft could not offer any price that would make Apple use Bing as the default search engine in Safari, highlighting Google's dominant position.
The trial revealed that Google pays Apple billions of dollars annually to maintain its default search engine status on Safari, a contract that is crucial for both companies and has been extended multiple times.
Judge Amit Mehta concluded that social media platforms like TikTok and specialized vertical providers are not true competitors to Google Search, and stated that even AI search does not yet pose a significant threat to Google's search business model.
👩🔬 Reddit to test AI-powered search result pagesLINK
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman announced plans to test AI-powered search results later this year, aiming to help users explore products, shows, games, and new communities on the platform.
Huffman indicated that the company might explore monetizing through paywalled subreddits, which could offer exclusive content or private areas while still maintaining the traditional free version of Reddit.
As Reddit seeks to diversify revenue sources, Huffman emphasized that the company has blocked certain entities from accessing Reddit content to ensure transparency and protect user privacy.
❌ Google is discontinuing the ChromecastLINK
Google announced the end of Chromecast on Tuesday, introducing the Google TV Streamer as its successor, marking the closure of an 11-year era that revolutionized home entertainment streaming.
Launched on July 24, 2013, the first Chromecast offered a cost-effective solution at $35, making it a popular alternative to more expensive streaming options like the Apple TV and Roku.
The device's influence pushed the streaming market forward, leading competitors like Roku and Amazon to lower their prices and make their systems more accessible, thus transforming the streaming landscape.
🤖 Robot dentist performs first automated procedureLINK
A Boston-based tech company, backed by Mark Zuckerberg’s dentist father, completed the world’s first all-robotic dental procedure, marking a significant advancement in medical technology.
The robot, operated by Perceptive, independently performed a process called "cutting," which involves drilling into and shaving down a tooth, demonstrating its capabilities in Barranquilla, Colombia.
This breakthrough aims to use autonomous machines for procedures like crown placements in as little as 15 minutes, enhancing precision, efficiency, and patient care.
