🍎 Apple develops its own AI chip 'Baltra'LINK
Apple is partnering with Broadcom to develop its first AI server chips, code-named Baltra, with production set to begin in 2026, aiming to enhance Apple Intelligence initiatives.
Broadcom, known for its semiconductor and software technologies, will collaborate on the chip's networking features, leveraging its expertise in data centers, networking, and wireless communications.
The partnership marks a continuation of Apple and Broadcom's relationship, which began in 2023 with a deal focused on 5G radio components, as both companies work alongside other partners like TSMC for chip development.
🤔 Meta donates $1M to Trump’s inaugural fundLINK
Meta contributed $1 million to President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration fund, marking a significant development in repairing its relationship with him, following a private meeting between Mark Zuckerberg and Trump at Mar-a-Lago.
The donation signals a turnaround from the past, as Meta had previously banned Trump from its platforms after the January 6, 2021, insurrection, showing a shift in dynamics between the company and the former president.
Mark Zuckerberg, alongside other major tech executives, has been seeking closer ties with Trump, potentially aiming for a role in shaping technology policy under the new administration.
🕶️ Google announces Android XR, a new OS for headsets and smart glassesLINK
Google has introduced Android XR, a new operating system developed for extended reality devices, including headsets and smart glasses, collaborating with Samsung and other manufacturers to advance this technology.
Android XR will feature immersive applications like Maps, Photos, and YouTube, and support Chrome for multiwindow browsing, aiming to integrate existing mobile applications from the Play Store.
The new OS places Google’s Gemini AI at its core, enhancing user experiences across a range of devices, and a Samsung device codenamed Moohan is expected to launch with the system next year.
🎮 Epic’s dream is starting to come trueLINK
Telefónica will preinstall the Epic Games Store on all new compatible Android phones sold, including Samsung devices, as part of a long-term alliance to reach millions of its users.
The collaboration marks the first time Epic's store will come preloaded on consumer phones, aiming to challenge Google's app store dominance and boost Epic's revenue share.
A recent legal victory for Epic Games against Google has paved the way for such partnerships, even though Telefónica was not influenced by Google's alleged anti-competitive actions.
🚀 NASA explains Ingenuity helicopter crashLINK
NASA's engineers and AeroVironment have identified that Ingenuity helicopter's crash was likely due to its navigation sensors failing to recognize enough features on Mars' smooth terrain during landing.
Conducting a forensic analysis without a black box on board, they relied on limited data and imagery to determine the helicopter's position error was due to insufficient surface texture.
The navigation system, using a downward-looking camera, lost track of visual features in Jezero Crater's featureless sand ripples, leading to the helicopter crashing during its 72nd flight.
