Short answer: open Gmail on a computer, click **Ask Gemini** at the top right, and type your request in the side panel: summarize a thread, draft a reply, clean up your inbox, find a flight time or book a meeting. The side panel needs an eligible plan: **Google AI Plus at $4.99/mo is the cheapest personal plan that includes it**, and the Free plan does not. Verified on Google's pages, October 2026.

Picture a 60-email thread about a vendor contract and a meeting in ten minutes. Gemini can turn that thread into five bullets and a list of open questions before you finish your coffee. My take: for anyone who lives in their inbox, the summary and drafting features alone justify the cheapest paid plan, while the Pro-only extras matter mostly to people who schedule a lot of meetings.

## Which Google plan includes Gemini in Gmail?

| Google AI Plus | $4.99/mo | Yes | AI Inbox, Proofread, Suggested Replies, Gmail Live on mobile; 2x Free usage | [Gemini plans](https://gemini.google/subscriptions/?hl=en) |
| Google AI Pro | $19.99/mo | Yes | Adds AI Overview in Gmail search and Help me schedule, plus Gemini in Docs; 4x Free usage | [Gemini plans](https://gemini.google/subscriptions/?hl=en) |

Plans and feature lists read on [gemini.google](https://gemini.google/subscriptions/?hl=en) and [Gmail Help](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/13952129) on October 28, 2026. Google AI plans and Gemini in Gmail are for people 18 and over, in select languages, and usage limits apply.

**Dupple data:** Toolradar, our software directory, tracks 1,573 AI assistant tools and 30 email clients as of October 2026 ([AI assistants](https://toolradar.com/best/ai-assistants), [email clients](https://toolradar.com/best/email-clients)). Gemini's edge in that crowd is not the model; it is that it already sits inside the inbox, calendar and Drive most people use. On a year of monthly payments, AI Plus comes to $59.88 and AI Pro to $239.88 (our arithmetic), so the step from Plus to Pro costs $15 a month.

## How to use Gemini in Gmail, step by step

1. **Open Gmail on your computer.** The Ask Gemini panel described here is the desktop web version.
2. **Click Ask Gemini at the top right.** A panel opens on the right side of your inbox.
3. **Type your request in the prompt box at the bottom** and click Submit. If you have an email open, Gemini works with that thread.
4. **Read the answer, then act on it.** Use Copy to take the text elsewhere, or rate it with the good or bad response buttons.
5. **Open More options at the top left** for your conversation history, Gems (custom assistants you build at gemini.google.com) and settings such as personalization.

The panel has a few controls worth knowing. **Add source** lets you attach Google Drive files so answers draw on your documents, and typing `@` in the prompt does the same. **Tools** holds extras like image generation. **View** switches the panel between Side and Wide layouts, which helps when you are reading a long summary next to the original thread.

## What can Gemini do in Gmail? Prompts to copy

Gmail Help groups Gemini's jobs into five: summarize, draft, organize, search and schedule. Here are prompts for each, adapted from Google's own examples, so you know they match how the feature is built.

**Summarize a long thread.** Open the thread, then ask: "Create a list of action items for me based on this email." For a dense legal or technical thread, "Explain this email to me like I'm 5 years old" is Google's own suggestion and works better than it sounds.

**Draft or refine a reply.** "Draft an email to Kevin summarizing our progress on Project Clover." Or paste your own text and ask Gemini to make it "professional and concise." Attach a Drive file as a source when the reply should quote figures from a doc.

**Find details buried in your inbox.** "When is my package arriving?" or "What time is my next flight?" Gemini reads reservations, flights and shipping emails. To pull a filtered view, try "Show unread emails from this week" and Gemini loads the results as a Gmail search.

**Clean up the inbox.** "Archive emails from John Ryan that are older than 30 days" or "Label emails from Luciano Reyes as Important." Gemini shows a confirmation card first and nothing happens until you confirm.

**Schedule from email.** "Create a 30 minute meeting with Kevin this week" or "What's my first meeting tomorrow?" Start the prompt with `@Calendar` to point Gemini at Google Calendar. Gemini only reads and creates events on your primary calendar.

One trap: Gemini answers from your Google content by default. **To get an answer from the web, put "Use Google Search" or "Using web search" in the prompt**, as Gmail Help instructs. Without it, a question about today's news or a public fact may come back thin.

Gemini in Gmail can also create a Google Doc, Sheet or Slides deck from a prompt, manage Drive files and tasks, and run custom skills you build in Workspace Studio. Those extras are useful, but the five jobs above are where most of the daily time savings come from.

## Is Gemini in Gmail free?

**Partly, and only in the US.** Google's [Gemini in Workspace guide](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/13952129) says personal Google accounts in the US get three Gemini in Gmail features at no charge: Help me write, AI Overviews for email threads and Suggested Replies. The Ask Gemini side panel, the one that summarizes, organizes and schedules on request, is not on the Free plan.

The cheapest way to get the panel on a personal account is Google AI Plus at $4.99/mo, available in more than 160 countries and territories. If you also want Gemini to answer questions above your Gmail search results or propose meeting times inside an email, you need AI Pro, because Google lists both of those features for Pro and Ultra only. For free routes to the Pro tier, see [how to get Gemini Pro for free](https://dupple.com/learn/how-to-get-gemini-pro-for-free), and for everything Gemini does without paying, [is Gemini free?](https://dupple.com/learn/is-gemini-free).

## Does Gemini in Gmail work on a work account?

**Yes, if your company's Google Workspace edition includes it and your admin allows it.** On work accounts, Google lists "Summarize and draft emails" from Business Starter up, while AI Inbox and Help me schedule start at Business Standard. Your administrator can also switch Gemini features off for the whole organization, so a missing panel on a work account is often a policy, not a bug. Our [Google Workspace pricing](https://dupple.com/learn/google-workspace-pricing) guide covers what each edition costs, and [Gemini Enterprise pricing](https://dupple.com/learn/gemini-enterprise-pricing) covers Google's separate business AI plans.

## Why is Gemini not showing in my Gmail?

Check these in order:

- **Plan.** On a personal account you need Google AI Plus, Pro or Ultra for the side panel; Google AI Pro and Ultra also require a personal account you manage yourself.
- **Age.** Google AI plans and Gemini in Gmail are only for people 18 and over.
- **Language.** Gemini in Gmail works in select languages. Google suggests switching your Google Account to a supported language if a feature does not appear.
- **Smart features.** If "Smart features in Google Workspace" is off in Gmail settings, Gemini features are unavailable. See the next section to turn it back on.
- **Device.** The Ask Gemini panel steps above are for Gmail on a computer.
- **Work account policy.** Ask your admin whether Gemini is enabled for your Workspace edition.

## Limits to know before you rely on it

**Bulk actions have guardrails.** Gemini will not process a cleanup request that matches more than 10,000 threads, it cannot mark multiple emails as spam, and it can only apply labels that already exist. After you confirm an action, you have 60 seconds to undo it; deleted mail then sits in Trash for 30 days.

**Usage limits are real but not printed as numbers.** Google describes Plus as 2x the Free usage and Pro as 4x, and says rate limits may apply, without publishing a message count. Heavy users should expect to hit a ceiling on Plus sooner than on Pro.

**Gemini reads your mail to answer.** That is the point of the feature, so decide whether you are comfortable with it. Google's [Gemini in Gmail privacy page](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/14615114) says that for Google AI plan users, Gemini uses your Workspace content to respond, does not use it to train Gemini or other generative AI models, and does not store your prompt or the output without your permission.

## How do I turn off Gemini in Gmail?

Google ties Gemini to the "Smart features in Google Workspace" setting. Per Google's [smart features guide](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/15604322):

1. On your computer, open Gmail and click Settings, then **See all settings**.
2. In the **General** tab, scroll to "Google Workspace smart features."
3. Click **Manage Workspace smart feature settings**.
4. Turn off **Smart features in Google Workspace**, then click **Save**.

The trade-off: with that setting off, you also lose other Workspace smart features, such as Gmail events showing up in Calendar. A separate checkbox, "Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet," controls older features like Smart Compose, Smart Reply and inbox categories.

## FAQ

**How do I use Gemini in Gmail?**

On a computer, open Gmail, click Ask Gemini at the top right and type your request in the prompt box at the bottom of the side panel. Gemini can summarize threads, draft replies, organize your inbox, find details like flight times and schedule meetings.

**Is Gemini in Gmail free?**

Not the Ask Gemini side panel. US personal accounts get Help me write, AI Overviews for email threads and Suggested Replies at no charge, but the side panel needs Google AI Plus ($4.99/mo), Pro, Ultra or an eligible Google Workspace plan.

**What is the cheapest plan with Gemini in Gmail?**

Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month is the cheapest personal plan that lists Gemini in Gmail. It covers summarizing and drafting emails, but AI Overview in Gmail search and Help me schedule need Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month.

**Can Gemini in Gmail search my inbox?**

Yes. Ask for unread emails, emails from a person or a date range, or details like a package arrival, and Gemini finds them or loads a Gmail search. Add "Use Google Search" to your prompt when you want an answer from the web instead.

**Can Gemini delete or archive emails for me?**

Yes. Gemini can archive, delete, label, star and mark emails read or unread, but only after you confirm. You get 60 seconds to undo, and it will not act on more than 10,000 matching threads.

**Does Google train Gemini on my emails?**

For Google AI plan users, Google says Gemini in Gmail uses your content to answer your prompts but does not use it to train Gemini or other generative AI models, and does not store prompts or outputs without your permission.
